2008 Chevrolet Equinox Interior Review

Note: This interior review was created when the 2008 Chevrolet Equinox was new.

Interior: 7.7

Almost all test drivers applaud the 2008 Chevrolet Equinox's interior, including its comfortable seats, tranquil interior noise level and pleasant styling and materials. "The quiet interior is roomy and functional, with an upscale appearance," says MSN. "There is comfortable room for four 6-footers, with an especially roomy back seat."

In addition to its quiet cabin and interior style and comfort, the Equinox also earns favorable feedback from reviewers because of its useful organizational and cargo features and specs. "Inside, where the people live, work and ride, is where the Chevy Equinox shines when compared to some of its competitors," says New Car Test Drive. A drawback, however, is the Equinox Sport's new V6 engine, which Consumer Guide finds noisy: "The same engine that sounds so refined in other GM products is loud and ragged in the Equinox Sport. Any wind or road noise is masked by persistent tire roar."

Reviewers generally agree the Chevy Equinox can comfortably seat two adults in the rear or three children, including three child safety seats. Many reviewers also note the ease of rear seat entry and exit. "Ultra easy in and out for rear passengers," says MSN. Consumer Guide finds "There's plenty of head and legroom up front, and the seats are supportive enough for good long-haul comfort."

The reviewer is even more complimentary of the rear seat, calling it "Equinox's defining asset" and noting, "There's plenty of head room." Reviewers especially like the movable rear seat, which relatively unique for this class of SUV. "To make way for larger passengers or cargo, the 60/40-split rear seat can slide nearly eight inches fore and aft," says Edmunds. Consumer Guide appreciates that the rear seats adjust "to create generous legroom."

Interior Features

Most test drivers agree the interior styling of the Equinox is a highlight. "Chevrolet designers opted for a simple, industrial look with large, clear gauges," says Edmunds. "Each series offers unique interior trimming: the base SUV (LS) features faux aluminum, while the upscale model (LT) features imitation wood."

Overall, reviewers like the interior gauges and materials. "On the inside, the Equinox manages to strike a nice mix between functional and sophisticated," says the San Jose Mercury News. Consumer Guide finds that "Most interior materials are textured and are of better quality than previous Equinox models we have tested," but doesn't like the placement of some switches in the Sport model, noting, "The power window switches, however, are staggered around the center console shift level, which is quite an inconvenience."

Sport model feature an upgraded interior which includes a leather-wrapped steering wheel, XM Satellite Radio and heated front seats. The new LTZ model features even more luxuries, including front and rear seats with leather inserts.

Stereo and Entertainment

An AM/FM stereo and CD player is standard for all models and LT models also feature MP3 playback capability. "Although most of the controls are simple in design, the stereo head unit's collection of small buttons is unnecessarily complicated," observes Edmunds. A six-disc CD player and seven-speaker premium sound system is optional on LT models (seven speakers are standard on the 3 LT) and standard on the new luxury LTZ model.

A touch-screen Navigation Radio and XM Satellite Radio are also optional on LT models. A DVD entertainment system is an available upgrade for LT models and features a 7-inch flip-down monitor, two wireless headphone sets and a remote control. The system has audio, video, video game and camcorder footage playback capabilities.

Additional Features

Many reviewers praise the available OnStar system, noting that its Turn-by-Turn Navigation serves in similar ways to a conventional navigation system, which is not available for the Equinox. Among the services OnStar provides are Vehicle Diagnostics, Advanced Automatic Crash Notification and Emergency Services, Hands-Free Calling and Remote Door Unlock. Also, the Equinox features a standard Driver Information Center (DIC), which monitors vehicle functions including engine oil level, tire pressure and fuel usage. Remote keyless entry is also standard on all models.

The Equinox offers 35.7 cubic feet of cargo space behind the second row of seats. Space expands to 67.1 cubic feet with the seats folded down. Most reviewers see cargo space as a major plus for the Equinox. Consumer Guide calls it "generous" and notes, "While the rear seatbacks don't fold completely flat, they don't get in the way when loading bulky objects."

Optional cargo features include a Cargo Security Cover to hide stored items and a Cargo Area Organizer. "An adjustable rear cargo shelf expands your loading options after a shopping trip and can also function as a picnic table," observes Edmunds. Consumer Guide, however, says the shelf feels "a bit flimsy."

The Equinox is also equipped with a number of storage containers and practical features including five cupholders, a center console with a concealed storage compartment and a roomy water-resistant floor storage bin. "Somebody at Chevy went through that SUV with an eye for the things that people need in their everyday lives," says the Detroit News, adding: "Good work."
