2016 Chevrolet Corvette Performance Review

Note: This performance review was created when the 2016 Chevrolet Corvette was new.

Performance: 10.0

Test drivers say the 2016 Chevrolet Corvette Stingray's V8 engine sounds great and pumps out serious power. They add that the Stingray provides athletic cornering without sacrificing ride comfort. If you want to up the ante, reviewers point out that the 2016 Corvette Z06 is available with its outrageous supercharged V8 and exotic-car-caliber handling.

  • "The 2016 Corvette is a blast to drive on rural roads and racetracks alike." -- Edmunds
  • "Whether you're on a long trip and getting 29 miles per gallon, blasting up a mountain road, or even heading to the golf course with a couple of bags in back, the C7 offers a world-class driving experience." -- AutoTrader (2015)
  • "The Corvette makes no compromises while at the same time offering a seemingly contradictory combination of attributes. It is just as easy to be wicked quick in the car as it is to be wicked comfortable, and the rolling thunder of the Corvette's 455-horsepower V8 engine is a cinch to tame during idle searches for an open space in a parking lot." -- Kelley Blue Book (2015)

Acceleration and Power

The 2016 Chevrolet Corvette Stingray is powered by a 6.2-liter V8 engine that makes 455 horsepower and 460 pound-feet of torque. Models with the performance exhaust package make 460 horsepower. A seven-speed manual transmission is standard and an eight-speed automatic is optional. Chevrolet estimates that the Corvette Stingray can accelerate from zero to 60 mph in as little as 3.7 seconds.

Fuel economy for a 2016 Corvette Stingray with the manual transmission is an EPA-estimated 17/29 mpg city/highway, which is good for a V8-powered sports car. The automatic model gets 16/29.

The Corvette Stingray's V8 engine provides extraordinarily strong acceleration and an intoxicating soundtrack, according to test drivers. They add that the standard manual transmission feels precise and smooth, and the optional automatic makes fast, nicely timed gear changes.

  • "As for the seven-speed manual, it's just about perfect, providing a user-friendly clutch, wonderfully laid-out pedals and crisp, fluid action through the gates." -- Edmunds
  • "Under the hood, the 6.2-liter V8 is all the engine most folks will ever need. Power is massive, with torque equally so, and the sounds are straight out of a drag-strip fantasy." -- AutoTrader
  • "Power is monstrous from the LT1. It just builds and builds and builds until it's time to shift." -- AutoWeek
  • "Quick responses and positive shifts are a constant at any speed. Even if you leave it in D and let the system make the calls for you, it's damn near perfect." -- Road and Track (2015 automatic transmission)

Handling and Braking

Auto writers agree that the 2016 Chevrolet Corvette Stingray offers incredibly sharp handling and a comfortable ride over long distances. They add that the Corvette Stingray's responsive steering, strong cornering grip and powerful brakes help it match the performance of the world's best sports cars.

A standard Drive Mode Selector has five modes that adjust throttle response, steering effort and other performance settings. The Corvette Stingray is available with a Z51 performance package that adds upgraded suspension components, brakes and larger wheels.

  • "The stock brakes are great, and pedal travel is short -- by the time I was an inch in, I had already scrubbed a good amount of speed." -- AutoWeek
  • "On the road, the Corvette combines astonishingly athletic handling with genuine long-distance comfort, a combination few cars at any price can match." -- AutoTrader
  • "Either way, the 2015 Corvette's steering provides excellent feel and response, while grip is extraordinary from the base tires and just gets better from there." -- Edmunds (2015)
  • "Thanks to the move to Michelin Pilot Super Sport radials, the Stingray is world-class in terms of braking and cornering." -- Car and Driver (2014)

High-Performance Trims

The 2016 Chevrolet Corvette Z06 has a supercharged 6.2-liter V8 engine that produces 650 horsepower and 650 pound-feet of torque. A seven-speed manual transmission is standard and an eight-speed automatic is optional. The Z06 is available with a high-performance Z07 package that includes upgraded aerodynamics, brakes and tires. With the upgrade, Chevrolet estimates that the Corvette Z06 accelerates from zero to 60 mph in 2.95 seconds.

According to test drivers, the Corvette Z06 has even more impressive acceleration than the already potent Stingray, and the Z06's handling is unbelievably sharp. Reviewers say the Z06 provides better performance than many exotic European sports cars with much higher price tags.

  • "When you add the 'Z06' moniker to the mix, things get downright crazy. Acceleration with the supercharged V8 is explosive, while handling is 'point-and-shoot' precise." -- Edmunds
  • "For the Z06, you'll love it if you like performance that crushes European exotics costing twice as much." -- Kelley Blue Book (2015)
