2015 Chevrolet Corvette Performance Review

Note: This performance review was created when the 2015 Chevrolet Corvette was new.

Performance: 10.0

The 2015 Chevrolet Corvette is extremely fun to drive and also very comfortable, test drivers write. They say the base Corvette Stingray has more than enough power in all situations and the high-performance Corvette Z06 is astoundingly fast. The Corvette has incredibly nimble handling and gets great fuel economy for a V8-powered sports car.

  • "Any Corvette Stingray is a bona fide thrill machine." -- Edmunds
  • "Whether you're on a long trip and getting 29 miles per gallon, blasting up a mountain road, or even heading to the golf course with a couple of bags in back, the C7 offers a world-class driving experience." -- AutoTrader
  • "The Corvette makes no compromises while at the same time offering a seemingly contradictory combination of attributes. It is just as easy to be wicked quick in the car as it is to be wicked comfortable, and the rolling thunder of the Corvette's 455-horsepower V8 engine is a cinch to tame during idle searches for an open space in a parking lot." -- Kelley Blue Book
  • "To sum: the 2015 Corvette Stingray is a brilliant sports car made better for most of its actual buyers with this [automatic] transmission." -- Autoblog

Acceleration and Power

The 2015 Chevrolet Corvette Stingray is powered by a 6.2-liter V8 that produces 455 horsepower (460 with optional performance exhaust) and 460 pound-feet of torque. The 2015 Corvette Z06 has a supercharged 6.2-liter V8 that produces 650 horsepower and 650 pound-feet of torque. A seven-speed manual transmission is standard and a new-for-2015 eight-speed automatic is optional. For the first time, the Z06 is available with an automatic transmission as well as the manual. Fuel economy for a 2015 Corvette Stingray with the manual transmission is an EPA-estimated 17/29 mpg city/highway, which is very good for a V8-powered sports car. Chevrolet estimates that the Corvette Stingray accelerates from 0 to 60 mph in as little as 3.8 seconds, and the Z06 makes the same run in as little as 2.95 seconds.

According to auto journalists, the base Corvette Stingray has incredibly strong acceleration in all situations and produces a delightful exhaust note. They add that the Z06 is blisteringly fast and has the goods to take on any car. Several critics are also impressed with the new eight-speed automatic, reporting that it is responsive and shifts very quickly.

  • "Today, the standard 6.2-liter V8 makes 460 hp, and beyond that, it just feels stronger. I remember the old 6.2 feeling a little soft at low rpm, but the new model isn't soft anywhere. It hauls the mail -- period. This time around, it's the base engine that's the perfect motor for the Corvette." -- AutoTrader
  • "On a road course, taking hot laps in an automatic that performs ignition-spark-cutting upshifts and positive-torque downshifts (engineer jargon for blipping the throttle to match revs) quicker than humanly possible allows the driver to concentrate on the steering and braking, potentially turning quicker laps in the process. Plus, from our seat-of-the-pants perspective, the GM 8L90 shifts as quickly as any dual-clutch unit available." -- Car and Driver
  • "If the base 455-hp V8 is a rocket engine, the Z06's supercharged 650-hp V8 is akin to the solid rocket boosters that gave liftoff to the Space Shuttle. For thousands less than a base Porsche 911 with no options, the 2015 Corvette Z06 will outrun almost any car in the world." -- Edmunds
  • "We drove more than 40 miles in highway and city settings around Milford. Smoothness was the name of its game. Intuitiveness was too. Multi-step highway passes in automatic mode required no pauses on its part. The 'Vette just flew. Then it calmly upshifted into a gear best suited for casual cruising." -- Motor Trend

Handling and Braking

The Chevrolet Corvette Stingray has rear-wheel drive and comes with a Driver Mode Selector that has Weather, Eco, Tour (default), Sport and Track modes, which adjust throttle response, shift points on models with the automatic transmission, steering effort and suspension settings based on which mode is selected. The Corvette Stingray is available with a Z51 performance package, which adds upgraded suspension components, brakes and wheels. The Corvette Z06 is available with a Z07 performance package, which has aerodynamic enhancements and upgraded brakes and tires.

Test drivers agree that the 2015 Corvette is both incredibly athletic and comfortable for longer trips. They're blown away by the Corvette Stingray's agile handling and ample grip, and note that the Driver Mode Selector effectively changes the feel of the car depending on what mode you choose. The Z06's handling is even more extraordinary, critics write.

  • "On the road, the Corvette combines astonishingly athletic handling with genuine long-distance comfort, which is a combination that few cars at any price can match." -- AutoTrader
  • "Naturally, the Z06 also provides suspension and braking upgrades that take the C7's already astounding dynamics to new heights." -- Edmunds
  • "Comparing the steering and braking to Porsche is perfectly reasonable, and the Drive Mode Selector on the center console significantly alters the Corvette's handling, steering, throttle response and even the exhaust note through five driver-selectable programs." -- Kelley Blue Book
  • "There's no question that the great things we had to say about the 2014 Corvette stay true for 2015, too. The handling at a race pace is sublime with occasional moments of scariness if you, like me, don't go to work in head-to-toe Nomex. I was particularly impressed with the overall grip of the car, even after I did half a lap of MRC in some light rain. This is a balanced, poised machine until you get silly with it (and even then, it's still fun)." -- Autoblog
