2014 Chevrolet Corvette Performance Review

Note: This performance review was created when the 2014 Chevrolet Corvette was new.

Performance: 9.5

Critics agree that the redesigned 2014 Chevrolet Corvette Stingray offers breathtaking acceleration and tenacious grip on a twisty road, as well as powerful brakes and responsive steering. Additionally, they note that a fairly comfortable ride makes the 2014 Corvette enjoyable to drive on longer trips.

  • "We uncorked it at GM's Milford, Michigan, proving grounds, where we strapped our testing gear to the thing and came away feeling sorry for almost any car that meets it at a stoplight, the track, or a winding road." -- Car and Driver
  • "The truth of the matter is, this latest C7 generation of the Corvette is in a performance league where few other cars can play. And most of those that do cost multiples as much." -- Consumer Guide
  • "On the road, the new Corvette Stingray is an A-Plus player. It owns every corner and rolls out acceleration without even breathing hard." -- Kelley Blue Book
  • "In short, this is the easiest high-performance car to drive fast ever built, but, remarkably, it's only as docile as you want it to be." -- Left Lane News

Acceleration and Power

The redesigned 2014 Chevrolet Corvette Stingray comes with a 6.2-liter V8 engine that produces 455 horsepower at 6,000 rpm (an optional performance exhaust system raises output to 460 horsepower at 4,600 rpm) and 460 pound-feet of torque at 4,600 rpm. A seven-speed manual transmission with rev matching is standard, which revs the engine during gear changes for smoother shifts. A six-speed automatic transmission with paddle shifters is optional. The EPA reports that the 2014 Corvette gets up to 17/29 mpg city/highway, which is quite good for a V8-powered luxury sports car.

Test drivers agree that the Corvette’s V8 engine offers a thrilling amount of horsepower and torque. They say that the engine operates quietly under normal conditions and makes its presence known with a deep exhaust note when called upon for more power. However, a few reviewers note that the V8 shakes the whole car at idle, and that the engines found in Porsche models seem to operate more smoothly. Auto writers agree that the six-speed automatic transmission shifts smoothly and quickly, while the seven-speed manual transmission earns praise for its slick shifter, as well as its rev matching feature, which adds to the driving fun.

  • "Under the hood, the 6.2-liter V8 is mandatory for now, and it's all the engine most folks will ever need. Power is massive, torque equally so, and the sounds are straight out of a drag-strip fantasy. The only part that gives us pause is how the engine shakes the whole car at idle; it's far from the refinement offered by overseas rivals, though some will appreciate the added ‘character.’" -- AutoTrader
  • "The six-speed automatic shifts smoothly or sharply depending on how deeply you're dipping into the throttle, and it downshifts smartly for more passing power. Steering-wheel paddles allow you to pick your own gears." -- Consumer Guide
  • "The new manual transmission shifts easily, and quickly downshifting with the rev-matching feature will make you feel like you're Corvette racecar driver Ron Fellows at Le Mans." -- Edmunds
  • "The new Corvette Stingray's cast-aluminum small-block engine - 455 horsepower and 460 lb-ft of race-worthy torque - is a masterpiece of the V8 art form. It breeds power, earns smart fuel-economy figures and summons the attention of all within hearing distance." -- Kelley Blue Book
  • "Though its V8 isn't as smooth and sonorous as a Porsche flat six, or even, say, Chrysler's HEMI, the Corvette roars to life when the skinny pedal is mashed. The sport exhaust stays comfortably quiet until called upon. Power comes on delicately before 2,000 rpm; at that point, it's fire in the hole as the 'Vette bolts forward with authority." -- Left Lane News

Handling and Braking

The 2014 Chevy Corvette Stingray comes with a Drive Mode Selector that has Weather, Eco, Tour (default), Sport and Track modes, which adjust throttle response, shift points (automatic models), steering effort and suspension settings for five different types of driving. A Z51 performance package is available on all trims, which adds performance upgrades that include larger wheels, larger front brakes, an upgraded suspension and an electronic limited slip differential. Critics agree that responsive steering, lithe handling and exceptionally strong brakes make the 2014 Corvette Stingray one of the most thrilling cars to drive in the class. Most note that the Corvette Stingray is one of the few sports cars that offer athletic driving dynamics and a ride that’s comfortable enough for longer trips. Still, a few test drivers say that the 2014 Corvette can feel slightly unsettled over road imperfections.

  • "On the road, the Corvette combines astonishingly athletic handling with genuine long-distance comfort, a combination that few cars at any price can match. Road noise is reasonable, and highway pit stops should be infrequent given this near-supercar's 30-mpg potential." -- AutoTrader
  • "Revised Brembo brakes with more swept area and good, but not overly firm, pedal feel brought us to a stop from 60 mph in just 102 feet, a world-class distance." -- AutoWeek
  • "Ride was a bit stiff over bumpy patches even in Tour, but not nearly what one might expect given the handling capabilities. It's this balance of sportiness and everyday livability that makes the Corvette an unexpected joy to drive even when quick corner-carving isn't on the menu." -- Consumer Guide
  • "Chevy promised that the car's stiffer frame, revised suspension tuning and new tires would improve the Corvette's handling and steering feel. Mission accomplished. The 2014 Corvette's steering provides excellent feel and response and the grip is extraordinary." -- Edmunds
  • "The Chevy's steering is responsive enough to give Porsche night sweats, and its braking has that buttoned-down, all-business feel that makes driver confidence a given." -- Kelley Blue Book
