2019 Chevrolet Bolt Interior Review

Interior: 7.2

The 2019 Chevrolet Bolt EV is a hatchback with seating for five people. It has several standard convenience and connectivity features, as well as a large helping of available driver assistance technologies. Cargo and passenger space are decent, though the seat cushions are a little uncomfortable. A major knock against the Bolt is its low-rent cabin materials.

  • "Chevy's desire to save weight and cost with the interior is obvious. The carpet feels thin, and the easily dirtied left footrest is unprotected. The interior panels don't even attempt to disguise that they're made of hard plastic. For a car in the Bolt's price range, it's disappointing." -- Edmunds
  • "Quiet, comfortable and spacious, the Bolt EV's cabin has a contemporary design flair that helps offset its abundance of hard plastic and dearth of soft-touch surfaces." -- Kelley Blue Book (2018)
  • "The 2017 Chevrolet Bolt's strong suits are its attractive five-door package, with interior space made more generous by the flat floor. The batteries are in the floor of the car, freeing up functional cargo space." -- Automobile Magazine (2017)

This hatchback seats up to five people on standard cloth upholstery. Manually adjustable front seats and a 60/40 split-folding rear seat are also included. A handful of upgrades are available, such as leather upholstery, a heated and leather-wrapped steering wheel, and heated seats in both rows.

The cabin is spacious, with ample head- and legroom to allow two average-sized adults to sit comfortably in the back for a short trip. The seats are supportive, but they don’t have enough cushioning to feel comfortable on longer trips. There are two sets of LATCH connectors on the rear outboard seats and a middle-seat tether anchor. However, the lower anchors are buried deep in the seat cushions, making them tricky to use.

  • "The Bolt's seats feel supportive and offer height adjustability, but they lack a feeling of plushness. And they feel small, as if you're sitting on them instead of in them. The latter may matter most to larger folks, but it's worth sitting in one and making sure before you sign any papers." -- Edmunds
  • "Clear forward visibility, a spacious back seat with plenty of leg- and headroom for two adults, and a deep rear-cargo well help offset the interior's subjective shortcomings." -- Car and Driver (2017)
  • "The seats aren't very comfortable. Chevy made them exceptionally thin to maximize interior space. … Who knows what the construction has to do with it; all I can tell you is that the backrest and bottom cushion are firm, and the bolsters flanking these cushions are borderline hard. I felt like the seat was crowding my butt, and my butt isn't all that large (I swear)." -- (2017)

Interior Features

Chevrolet outfitted the base Bolt LT with automatic climate control, proximity keyless entry, push-button start, a rearview camera, and the Teen Driver safety system. The standard MyLink infotainment system features voice controls, a Wi-Fi hot spot, a 10.2-inch touch screen, satellite radio, a six-speaker audio system, Bluetooth, two USB ports, Apple CarPlay, and Android Auto.

The Bolt EV’s infotainment system is easy to use. The menu layout is straightforward, with redundant buttons and knobs below the screen for easy access while driving. The 10.2-inch touch screen is larger than the screens found in many rivals.

Other available goodies include a seven-speaker Bose audio system, two rear-seat USB charging ports, and wireless device charging. Built-in navigation is not available, since Chevrolet counts on consumers using the navigation systems on their phones via Apple CarPlay or Android Auto.

Several driver assistance technologies are optional as well, such as a surround-view parking camera, a rear camera mirror, forward collision warning, automatic emergency braking, a following distance indicator, rear parking sensors, blind spot monitoring, rear cross traffic alert, lane keep assist, lane departure warning, and automatic high beams.

  • "The controls are thoughtfully arranged and separated by function, with a handy volume knob and tune buttons below the touchscreen. Climate controls are also prominent and self-explanatory. The instrument panel can be configured three ways; we like the Enhanced setting's range-coaching features." -- Edmunds
  • "The Bolt's 10.2 inch touchscreen is a delight, and indicates, along with all the connectivity built in to the car, that the Bolt will get a lot of fresh consideration from Millennial 'connecterati'-people for whom ease of connectivity while they drive actually trumps horsepower and torque." -- Automobile Magazine (2017)
  • "There is no embedded navigation system. Chevrolet correctly figures that most electric-car buyers will be savvy enough to link to Google Maps or another navigation app on their cellphone, displayed on the big, 10.2-inch center touchscreen. Speaking of savvy, available with the Bolt's top Premier trim is a rearview mirror that's actually an 80-degree wide-angle camera feed from the back of the car." -- New York Daily News (2017)

With 16.9 cubic feet of cargo space, the 2019 Bolt EV can carry more of your stuff than most compact cars. Folding down the rear seats expands available space to 56.6 cubic feet. In the top Premier trim, the floor of the cargo area is moveable in two positions – a lower position to carry taller items, or a higher level that creates a flat load floor with the folded rear seats.

  • "At 16.9 cubic feet with all seats in use, the Bolt's cargo area is usefully sized. The available floor panel cover can either be left in place for hidden basement storage or removed to carry bulkier items. Fold one or both parts of the 60/40-split back seat to open up a bigger space." -- Edmunds
  • "In back, the cargo floor can be set at two positions: a raised one that leaves it level with the folded rear seat backs and the cargo opening with about a 4-inch-high space beneath it, or lowered to the bottom of that 4-inch space to allow for more cargo height." -- Consumer Guide (2017)
  • "The Bolt's trunk is about the size of a midsize sedan's. Fold the rear seats, and the Bolt can match small crossover SUVs for utility." -- New York Daily News (2017)
