ALG Residual Value Best Mainstream Brand – Honda
Honda leads the industry in the residual value of its vehicles, earning top honors for six of its cars. The full-line automaker builds vehicles ranging from the subcompact 2020 Honda Fit to the 2020 Honda Ridgeline compact pickup. The 2020 Honda CR-V is one of the most popular SUVs in America.
A key component of the company's ability to maintain high residual values is its ability to sell cars with fewer incentives than many rivals. According to ALG, Honda’s positive brand perception allows them to limit mass discounting to drive volume.
Honda’s newest offerings include the ruggedized 2020 Honda Passport and the fuel-efficient 2020 Honda CR-V Hybrid. It’s the first time they’ve installed a hybrid powertrain in one of their crossovers.
ALG Residual Value Best Premium Brand – Land Rover
Building some of the most luxurious, yet formidable, SUVs in the market, Land Rover is ALG's best premium brand for maintaining residual value. The venerable British marque, which is a subsidiary of Indian automaker Tata Motors, placed three of its vehicles in ALG’s list of segment winners.
Land Rover’s U.S. offerings span the SUV market from the $37,800 2020 Land Rover Discovery Sport to the 2020 Land Rover Range Rover, which starts at $90,900 and climbs well-above $200,000. For 2020, the Land Rover Defender returns to the company’s lineup. Every Land Rover product is capable both on- and off-road, with sophisticated suspension and traction management systems. Their interiors are world-class, with top-notch materials and exquisite design.
Compared to most automakers, Land Rover is a relatively small company with a small dealer network. That allows them to keep the number of new cars produced and in inventory low while keeping their new and used car prices high.
ALG Premium Fullsize: 2020 Volvo V90
$51,540 | U.S. News Overall Score: 7.7/10
The 2020 Volvo V90 is a well-equipped wagon with seating for five, potent engine options, and a plethora of advanced safety and driver assistance technologies. It's available in standard two- and all-wheel drive models, plus a slightly lifted all-wheel-drive model called the V90 Cross Country.
A lively 250-horsepower turbocharged four-cylinder engine comes standard. For more power, you can upgrade to a potent 316-horsepower four-cylinder engine that’s both turbocharged and supercharged.
The V90's cabin is outfitted with high-quality materials and has an attractive design. A 9-inch vertically oriented touch screen is set in the center of the dash. Its design allows you to display both vehicle settings and Apple CarPlay or Android Auto simultaneously.
All V90s come standard with automatic emergency braking, lane-keeping assist, rear cross traffic alert, active bending headlights, and driver attention monitoring. Volvo’s Pilot Assist semiautonomous driving system is available. In certain conditions, it can manage steering, acceleration, and braking, though the driver must remain engaged in the driving process.
The 2020 V90 earns a midpack position in our ranking of wagons. It’s held back by a small cargo area and below-average predicted reliability rating.
ALG Premium Midsize: 2020 Lexus RC
$41,295 | U.S. News Overall Score: 7.4/10
According to ALG, the 2020 Lexus RC holds its value better than other vehicles in its premium small car class. That’s saying something, considering the RC starts out with one of the highest starting prices in its class.
The RC a 2+2 sports coupe, with comfortable seating up front and not-so-comfortable seating in the back. It comes loaded with standard advanced safety and driver assistance technology, including automatic emergency braking, adaptive cruise control, and lane-keeping assist. Unfortunately, its cabin tech isn’t quite as good, with a fussy infotainment controller that’s confusing and distracting to use when you’re on the road.
You can get a Lexus RC with engine power ranging from 241 to 472 horsepower. Most models are outfitted with rear-wheel drive, though you can get RC models with all-wheel drive. Its predicted reliability rating is admirable, with a score of 4.5 out of five.
For 2020, Lexus refreshed the RC F trim and debuted the wild RC F Track Edition. Android Auto, until now unavailable, joins Apple CarPlay support in the car’s infotainment system. The RC earns a lower-half rating in our ranking of luxury small cars.
ALG Premium Compact: 2020 BMW 2 Series
$35,300 | U.S. News Overall Score: 8.7/10
ALG reports that the 2020 BMW 2 Series holds its value better than rivals. It’s available in two- and four-door (Gran Coupe) body styles, with rear- or all-wheel drive. BMW offers several engines, ranging from merely peppy to extremely potent. It’s one of the most affordable BMWs you can buy.
The 2020 2 Series holds a top spot in our ranking of luxury small cars. In addition to excellent power and nimble handling, it has a fantastic predicted reliability rating of five out of five. Though the car's interior is well-appointed and roomy up front, rear-seat passengers in either the four-seat coupe or five-seat sedan will be uncomfortable.
Every 2 Series comes equipped with a 6.5- or 8.8-inch iDrive touch-screen infotainment system. Support for Apple CarPlay is available, but Android Auto is not an option.
ALG Premium Executive: 2020 Lexus LS
$75,450 | U.S. News Overall Score: 8.2/10
The 2020 Lexus LS isn’t the most powerful, posh, or roomy car among luxury flagship sedans. Still, it's the one most likely to retain exceptional value through its first three years on the road. In our ranking of super luxury cars, it holds a mid-pack spot.
Lexus offers two powertrain options for its largest sedan. The gas-only LS gets a 416-horsepower twin-turbo V6 that's matched to a 10-speed automatic transmission. Rear-wheel drive is standard, while all-wheel drive is optional. The LS Hybrid uses a V6 engine and a pair of electric motors to produce a total of 354 horsepower. It flows to the wheels through a continuously variable automatic transmission. The LS has a smooth, refined ride, especially when outfitted with available air suspension.
The LS has an excellent predicted reliability rating of 4.5 out of five stars. It comes standard with automatic emergency braking, adaptive cruise control, blind spot monitoring, and automatic high-beam headlights. Lane tracing assist, which keeps the car between the lines by actively steering the large sedan when necessary, is also included.
Inside the LS, you'll find standard leather upholstery and a 12.3-inch infotainment system that supports Amazon Alexa and Apple CarPlay.
ALG Premium Sportscar: 2020 Porsche 911
$113,300 | U.S. News Overall Score: 8.8/10
If you need any more reasons to dream of a Porsche 911, just know that it has the highest retained value over three years, according to ALG. The iconic 911 was redesigned in and out for 2020, with subtly refined looks and updated technology.
The base engine in the updated 2020 Porsche 911 Carrera coupe and cabriolet is a 379-horsepower twin-turbo flat-six mounted in the back end of the car. Upgrade to the Carrera S, and the same motor has been tuned to 443-horsepower. At the top of the line is the 911 Turbo S, with a 580-horsepower twin-turbo six-cylinder engine. Rear-wheel drive comes standard, with all-wheel drive fitted to specific models.
In our luxury sports car ranking, the 911 earns a spot near the top of the list. Its updated cabin now includes a 10.9-inch infotainment system and available night vision. The front seats are supportive and comfortable, while the rear seats aren’t roomy enough for anything other than packages.
ALG Compact: 2020 Subaru Impreza
$18,695 | U.S. News Overall Score: 7.5/10
Though the 2020 Subaru Impreza earns a spot near the bottom of our hyper-competitive ranking of compact cars, it does have quite a bit going for it, including a residual value award from ALG.
The 2020 Impreza comes standard with all-wheel drive. It gets excellent fuel economy, especially for an all-wheel-drive vehicle, and has a roomy interior. Its ranking, however, is brought down by a dismal predicted reliability score of two out of five, a weak 152-horsepower engine, and some cheap cabin materials.
Every automatic transmission-equipped Impreza now comes with EyeSight, a comprehensive suite of advanced driver assistance and safety technology. EyeSight is not available on Imprezas with the standard five-speed manual transmission. The compact car, which is available in sedan and hatchback body styles, earned a 2020 Top Safety Pick award from the Insurance Institute for Highway Safety (IIHS).
ALG Fullsize: 2020 Dodge Charger
$29,995 | U.S. News Overall Score: 7.4/10
Though the 2020 Dodge Charger hasn't been fully redesigned in several years, Dodge continues to update the model with current technology, new editions, and ever-increasing horsepower. That's helped the Charger retain high residual value even as the sedan ages. For 2020, Dodge added Widebody SRT Hellcat and Scat Pack models to the lineup.
The base 292-horsepower V6 under the hood of the Charger is as potent as the most powerful engines in some large sedan rivals. The fun only goes up from there, with a selection of V8s that tops out with the 707-horsepower Hellcat supercharged V8. Most models employ rear-wheel drive, though all-wheel drive is available on V6 Chargers.
In our ranking of large cars, the Charger holds the bottom spot. Its predicted reliability is a lousy two out of five, while its plastic-heavy interior is overdue for an update.
ALG Electric: 2019 Audi e-tron
$74,800 | U.S. News Overall Score: 8.3/10
The 2019 Audi e-tron is the first of a new family of high-performance battery-electric cars from the German carmaker. The electric crossover has an EPA-estimated range of 204 miles. It produces 355 horsepower in normal driving and 402 horsepower in Boost Mode.
The e-tron can launch from zero to 60 mph in a brisk 5.5 seconds. While the range and performance lag the Tesla Model X, the Audi exhibits a smoother ride, a higher standard of build quality, and a cabin outfitted with nicer materials. It rides on air suspension and includes an off-road mode that maximizes the capability of its standard Quattro all-wheel-drive system.
There’s plenty of interior space in the e-tron’s five-seat cabin. Leather upholstery comes standard, as does a 10.1-inch Audi MMI infotainment system and a Virtual Cockpit digital instrument cluster.
The e-tron earns a spot near the top of our ranking of luxury hybrid and electric vehicles.
ALG Subcompact: 2020 Honda Fit
$16,190 | U.S. News Overall Score: 8.7/10
The 2020 Honda Fit earns the top spot in our ranking of subcompact cars. Though small in size, it’s huge in versatility, with a flexible interior that can accommodate a variety of cargo shapes and sizes. It won our 2020 Best Subcompact SUV for the Money award.
At $16,190, it’s affordable, and its excellent fuel economy and above-average predicted reliability rating makes it cheap to own over the long run. Its ALG Residual Value award means it will still be worth a fair bit of money after being on the road for a few years.
The top trim levels of the Fit feature the Honda Sensing package of driving and safety aids. It includes adaptive cruise control, lane-keeping assist, and automatic emergency braking. Moving up in the trim levels also gets you an infotainment system that supports Android Auto and Apple CarPlay.
ALG Sportscar: 2020 Subaru WRX
$27,495 | U.S. News Overall Score: 7.3/10
ALG classifies the 2020 Subaru WRX as a sports car, and awarded the compact sedan with this year's residual value award for the class. The Subaru WRX and WRX STI siblings are performance-tuned all-wheel-drive sedans with 268 and 310 horsepower, respectively.
In our ranking of compact cars, the WRX is scored near the bottom of the list. While it has great performance, handling that excels on twisty roads, and excellent traction, it also has a feeble predicted reliability score of two out of five. Most class rivals have nicer interiors and better trunk space. Its horsepower comes at the cost of fuel economy, which is poor.
Of course, no one buys the WRX or WRX STI for their fuel economy or trunk space, like other compact cars. Instead, they buy them for their rally-inspired performance, which makes them outliers in the segment.
ALG Midsize: 2020 Honda Accord
$24,020 | U.S. News Overall Score: 8.3/10
If you’ve ever looked at the prices of used Honda Accords, you know how it holds its value year after year. ALG honored it with its 2020 Midsize Car Residual Value Award because of that ability. It holds a spot near the top of the U.S. News midsize car ranking.
The 2020 Honda Accord was also a finalist for both our 2020 Best Midsize Car for the Money and Best Midsize Car for Families awards. It rewards drivers with agile handling and ample power from a choice of two turbocharged four-cylinder engines. The Accord’s cabin is upscale and roomy, while its trunk is larger than many in the class.
Honda Sensing comes standard on all models of the Accord. It includes automatic emergency braking, adaptive cruise control, lane-keeping assist, and traffic sign recognition.
ALG Premium Subcompact Utility: 2020 Audi Q3
$34,700 | U.S. News Overall Score: 8.4/10
2020 marks the first year ALG has given a Residual Value Award in the burgeoning premium subcompact utility market. The 2020 Audi Q3, which sits atop our ranking of luxury subcompact SUVs, won the inaugural award from ALG. The Q3 was redesigned for 2019 and has few changes for 2020.
Each Q3 comes with a 228-horsepower four-cylinder turbo, an eight-speed automatic transmission, and confidence-inspiring all-wheel drive. It may not be the quickest or most agile entry in the class, but it’s nimble and powerful enough to satisfy most drivers.
The Q3 has a predicted reliability rating of four out of five, meaning it’s less likely to require costly repairs as it ages than vehicles with lower scores.
Inside the Q3, you’ll find one of the nicest cabins in the class, with loads of standard and available technology. The Q3 comes with either an 8.8- or 10.1-inch touch-screen infotainment system. Both support Android Auto and Apple Carplay. Audi’s Virtual Cockpit digital instrument panel is available.
ALG Premium Fullsize Utility: 2020 Land Rover Range Rover
$90,900 | U.S. News Overall Score: 7.6/10
Land Rover intentionally doesn't flood the streets with their SUVs, which is one of the reasons their vehicles hold their value over time. Their flagship is the 2020 Land Rover Range Rover, which won ALG’s Residual Value Award in the Premium Fullsize Utility segment.
The Range Rover, with its cloud-like ride on-road and its exceptional agility off-road, comes standard with four-wheel drive and air suspension. Its electronic Terrain Response system configures the large SUV for different road and driving conditions. The Range Rover's state-of-the-art traction management systems can make even inexperienced off-road drivers look like they've been doing it for years.
The Range Rover’s opulent interior is outfitted with world-class materials and quality. Options for upgraded finishes are as long as your wallet is deep. Land Rover offers a wide array of engine options, including hybrid, plug-in hybrid, diesel, and high-performance supercharged V8 power plants.
In our ranking of luxury large SUVs, the Range Rover holds a mid-pack spot.
ALG Premium Compact Utility: 2020 Porsche Macan
$50,900 | U.S. News Overall Score: TBD
The 2020 Porsche Macan is a dynamic compact luxury SUV with a potent array of available engines, a fantastic predicted reliability score, and an ALG Residual Value award for retaining its price. The Macan is a driver's SUV, with small back seats and below-average cargo space.
Base Macans come with a 248-horsepower four-cylinder turbo with enough torque to make it feel more powerful than the specs indicate. You can upgrade to either a 348-horsepower turbocharged V6 or a 434-horsepower twin-turbo V6 if you want a, well, more Porsche-like driving experience. All models use a seven-speed automatic transmission and come standard with all-wheel drive. Of course, Porsche offers a catalog of options to make your SUV look and go faster.
Even at its base price, the Macan comes well-equipped, with leather and suede upholstery, a power liftgate, tri-zone automatic climate control, and a 10.9-inch infotainment system with navigation.
The 2020 Macan is not currently scored in our ranking of luxury compact SUVs because a full set of safety marks have yet to be published. It’s not unusual for high-end vehicles to lack some crash test scores.
ALG Premium Midsize Utility 2nd Row Seating: 2020 Land Rover Range Rover Sport
$68,650 | U.S. News Overall Score: TBD
Adding to Land Rover’s trophy case is the ALG Residual Value award given to the 2020 Land Rover Range Rover Sport. The sleeker and more athletic sibling to the Range Rover, the Range Rover Sport shares many of its engine options, including hybrid, plug-in hybrid, and diesel engines.
Like other models from Land Rover, the Range Rover Sport is undeterred by even the most challenging off-road and inclement weather conditions. All models come standard with four-wheel drive and an electronic traction management system. An enhanced Terrain Response system is available, as is air suspension.
While the Range Rover Sport’s interior doesn’t offer as much cargo room as most rivals, it’s opulent and outfitted with top-notch materials. If you don’t like a finish you see in the cabin, rest assured that Land Rover probably offers an upgrade.
Because it does not have a full set of crash test results from the National Highway Traffic Safety Administration (NHTSA) and the Insurance Institute for Highway Safety (IIHS), the Range Rover Sport is not currently scored in our ranking of luxury midsize SUVs.
ALG Premium Midsize Utility 3rd Row Seating: 2020 Land Rover Discovery
$52,300 | U.S. News Overall Score: TBD
The 2020 Land Rover Discovery is a 3-row midsize SUV that shares exceptional off-road prowess with its more expensive siblings. Like them, it maintains enough of its value to garner an ALG Residual Value award. The Discovery seats between five and seven, depending on the seating configuration you choose.
All Land Rover Discovery models come standard with four-wheel drive and hill-descent control. You can give it even more off-road capability by adding the optional Terrain Response 2 electronic traction management system, a two-speed transfer case with a low range for severe conditions, and All-terrain Progress Control that acts like off-road cruise control.
The base engine in the Discovery is a supercharged V6 that produces 340-horsepower. You can opt for a 254-horsepower turbodiesel that gets excellent fuel economy and has impressive torque for off-road adventures. With the proper equipment, the Discovery can tow up to 8,201 pounds.
We don't currently have the Land Rover Discovery listed in our luxury midsize SUV ranking. Its ranking will be updated when we receive final crash test scores.
ALG Subcompact Utility: 2020 Subaru Crosstrek
$22,145 | U.S. News Overall Score: 7.5/10
The 2020 Subaru Crosstrek is a four-door hatchback with plenty of room for five and above-average cargo space to carry all of their stuff. Like most Subarus, the Crosstrek comes standard with all-wheel drive. It’s slightly raised stance enables it to tackle light off-road tasks and unimproved roads.
In addition to its ALG Residual Value award, the Crosstrek also received a Top Safety Pick honor from the IIHS. It's the organization's second-highest rating. In our ranking of subcompact SUVs, it holds a spot in the upper half of the list.
The Crosstrek’s 152-horsepower four-cylinder engine and continuously variable automatic transmission won’t help you win any speed records, but the car’s all-wheel-drive traction will save you when the weather turns nasty. It has a high-quality interior, a smooth ride, and easy to use infotainment systems that support Android Auto and Apple CarPlay. Upper trims can be outfitted with Subaru’s EyeSight suite of advanced driver assistance and safety technologies.
ALG Compact Utility: 2020 Subaru Forester
$24,495 | U.S. News Overall Score: 7.8/10
The 2020 Subaru Forester isn’t the sleekest crossover SUV on the market, but its boxy cabin gives it loads of flexible passenger and cargo space. Like most Subarus, every Forester comes with all-wheel drive. For 2020, every Forester comes with the EyeSight suite of advanced safety and driver assistance systems.
In our ranking of compact SUVs, the Forester earns a spot in the upper half of the list. It was a finalist for both our 2020 Best Compact SUV for Families and Best Compact SUV for the Money awards. The IIHS awarded it with a Top Safety Pick+ honor.
The Forester would have an even higher spot in our rankings if it weren’t for its lousy predicted reliability rating of two out of five and its mediocre acceleration. Its 182-horsepower four-cylinder engine may be efficient, but it’s not exciting.
ALG Midsize Utility 2nd Row Seating: 2020 Honda Passport
$31,990 | U.S. News Overall Score: 7.9/10
The 2-row 2020 Honda Passport takes many of the features of the 3-row Honda Pilot and packages them into a crossover that’s a little shorter in length and taller in height. Its looks are a bit more rugged than most in the class, though it’s really only designed for light off-roading.
Our ranking of midsize SUVs shows the Passport with a spot in the middle of the pack. It is our 2020 Best 2-Row SUV for Families award winner.
Every Passport comes standard with the Honda Sensing package of driver assistance and safety technology. It includes lane-keeping assist, adaptive cruise control, and automatic emergency braking. The Passport was named a 2020 IIHS Top Safety Pick. Power comes from a 280-horsepower V6 that’s matched to a nine-speed automatic transmission. It’s available with either front- or all-wheel drive.
ALG Midsize Utility 3rd Row Seating: 2020 Honda Pilot
$31,650 | U.S. News Overall Score: 8.0/10
The 2020 Honda Pilot is the brand’s largest SUV. It can seat either seven or eight in its comfortable 3-row cabin, depending on what type of second-row seating you choose. It holds a spot in the upper half of our midsize SUV ranking.
The Pilot’s ride is set up for cruising, rather than canyon carving, with a suspension that’s softer than some rivals. It’s powered by a 280-horsepower V6 with is up for most tasks, including towing up to 5,000 pounds, when properly equipped. Front-wheel drive comes standard, with all-wheel drive available.
Honda Sensing comes standard. It includes automatic emergency braking, adaptive cruise control, and lane-keeping assist. Upper trims gain blind spot monitoring, rear cross traffic alert, and parking sensors.
Base models come with a 5-inch display audio system. Upgrading one trim level to the EX model gets you a significantly enhanced 8-inch touch-screen infotainment system, with support for Android Auto and Apple CarPlay.
ALG Fullsize Utility: 2020 Chevrolet Tahoe
$49,000 | U.S. News Overall Score: 8.0/10
The 2020 Chevrolet Tahoe marks the last year of the current generation for the large, 3-row, truck-based SUV. It can seat either seven or eight in its roomy cabin, depending on the interior layout you choose. According to ALG, it holds its value better than any of its rivals.
Despite its age and impending replacement, the 2020 Tahoe still does well in our large SUV ranking, earning a spot near the top. Its perfect predicted reliability score of five out of five is unmatched by segment rivals, meaning it’s less likely to require costly repairs as it ages.
The Tahoe is an excellent choice if you need to both haul your family and tow a trailer. Properly equipped, it can tow as much as 8,600 pounds. Chevy offers a choice of two V8s for the Tahoe. The smaller 5.3-liter V8 cranks out 355 horsepower, while the larger 6.2-liter V8 is good for 420 horsepower. The SUV is available with rear- or four-wheel drive.
ALG Off-Road Utility: 2020 Jeep Wrangler
$28,295 | U.S. News Overall Score: 7.0/10
ALG’s pick for its Residual Value Award in the Off-Road Utility category is one of the most capable off-road vehicles you can buy. Though it’s not the most refined vehicle on the highway, the 2020 Jeep Wrangler is all-but unstoppable when trail or weather conditions get rough.
The Wrangler’s predicted reliability score is not good, nor is its fuel economy, but true Jeepers don’t care. They buy the Wrangler, or its four-door Wrangler Unlimited sibling, and spend thousands of dollars in Mopar and aftermarket accessories to make it their own.
While the latest generation of the venerable off-roader comes with many of the features customers love, such as multiple removable top options, doors that can be removed, and a fold-down windshield, it gains several high-tech features. Every Wrangler gets a version of Jeep's excellent UConnect infotainment system, which is both feature-packed and easy to use. Adaptive cruise control and forward collision warning are available.
The 2020 Jeep Wrangler is not currently scored in our ranking of compact SUVs as its full slate of crash test scores are not yet available.
ALG Fullsize Pickup: 2020 GMC Sierra HD
$37,395 | U.S. News Overall Score: TBD

The new truck offers a host of technologies to make trailering easy, including as many as 15 camera views. Properly equipped, a Sierra HD 3500 can tow as much as 35,500 pounds.

In all of the trucks, the infotainment system also hosts many of the advanced trailering systems.
Upper trim models can be outfitted with advanced safety and driver assistance features, including automatic emergency braking, lane departure warning, and following distance alert.
ALG Midsize Pickup: 2020 Toyota Tacoma
$26,050 | U.S. News Overall Score: 7.4/10

The 2020 Toyota Tacoma comes with more technology than ever, including cameras, safety systems, and smartphone integration. It holds a midpack position in our ranking of compact trucks.

These 2020 Vehicles Will Save You Money When You Lease
When it comes to leasing, some cars are much better deals than others. The cost of leasing a new vehicle is the difference between its capitalized cost (its price) and its expected value at the end of the lease, called its residual value, plus interest and fees.
Finding a car with a high residual value gives you a head start on getting an affordable lease deal.
The best ways to save money on a lease are to lower its capitalized cost by negotiating a low price, getting a lease with a low interest rate (called the money factor in leasing), or finding a vehicle with a high residual value. While you can haggle over the first two, a vehicle's residual value is usually fixed, and can't be negotiated.
Residual values are set by companies such as ALG, and most leasing companies follow their guidance. Each year, the company awards brands and models with projected three-year residual values that are the highest percentage of their original MSRPs, compared to their peers.
"Strong residual values are the foundation of successful automotive brands," said Eric Lyman, chief industry analyst at ALG, a subsidiary of TrueCar. "The residual value is important for consumers to take into consideration before making their next vehicle purchase because we know that depreciation is the single biggest cost of vehicle ownership."
ALG’s parent company, TrueCar, is a U.S. News & World Report partner for our Best Price Program.
On the following pages, we'll explore the brands and models receiving this year's ALG Residual Value Awards. Keep in mind that ALG's segments don't necessarily match the vehicle classes U.S. News uses in its rankings and reviews. Also, note that our scores can change over time as new information becomes available, so the U.S. News scores you see in this article may not match those on each individual review page.
