Mercury Insurance is an insurance company formed out of Los Angeles, California in 1962 by Mr. George Joseph. Its goal is to provide quality insurance and customer service at fair prices for the average driver. There are plenty of large auto insurance providers out there, including USAA, Geico, and Farmers. Mercury sought to compete by providing affordable, competitive rates compared to these larger auto insurance groups.

Mercury passed $1 million in written premiums in a month in 1970, and they expanded from auto insurance to include homeowner’s insurance in 1972. The insurance company began expanding to other states in 1989. Today, Mercury Insurance Group specializes in auto insurance, home insurance, business insurance, renters and condo insurance, and mechanical protection.

The company’s slogan is, “Mercury provides everything you need in an insurance company.” For drivers or prospective customers interested in low car insurance rates, Mercury Insurance is worth considering.

In 2013, Forbes named Mercury Insurance as one of the most trustworthy companies in America. From 2017 through 2020, Insure.com has named Mercury Insurance as one of the top auto insurance companies. However, according to J.D. Power, Mercury scored a three out of five for overall customer satisfaction, which is roughly an average rating for the market. Additionally, although filing a claim is simple, there are some reports that receiving updates on a claim – customer service, in other words – can be spotty.

As of this writing, Mercury Insurance is available in 11 states: Arizona, California, Florida, Georgia, Illinois, Nevada, New Jersey, New York, Oklahoma, Texas, and Virginia. The insurance company does not offer the same services or discounts in all those states, but it provides auto insurance across the board. It may not be available nationwide, the way other companies such as Geico or USAA are, but Mercury is working on expanding its availability.

Types of Coverage from Mercury

If you live in one of the 11 states Mercury currently operates in, the company may be worth considering. It has some of the more affordable car insurance rates for policyholders. The tradeoff for low costs though is spotty service and responses to claims. Customer satisfaction is mixed, especially with regard to homeowners insurance, which doesn’t always share the low rates of other insurers.

Mercury provides all the basics of auto insurance. While there is some state-by-state variance, most places require auto insurers to provide a certain level of coverage, such as collision, property damage, personal injury, uninsured and underinsured motorists, and comprehensive coverage. Mercury also covers liability protection, medical payments, and rental vehicles. Note that you must have either collision coverage or comprehensive coverage in order to add a rental car benefit to your insurance policy.

You can also get 24/7 roadside assistance as an add-on to your auto policy. It can provide you real-time status updates via text message on your request. Note that, while some insurance companies let you use roadside assistance regardless of which vehicle you’re in, Mercury auto insurance is only available on the car you’ve insured. Services covered under roadside assistance include recharging the battery, towing, changing tires, and helping you if you accidentally lock your keys inside the vehicle.

Also available is ride-hailing insurance, which charges customers a low daily rate to provide coverage for drivers of rideshare programs such as Uber or Lyft.

Mercury car insurance sells its policies through a network of independent agents. You can contact your local agent to find out which coverage options Mercury Insurance Group can provide for you.

Mercury Insurance Complaints

Although our research did not uncover a significant amount of complaints which are uncommon to other companies, such as a concern of rates rising unexpectedly, we did find numerous reports of low customer satisfaction. Additionally, it takes Mercury time to pay out claims, and there are few add-ons to customize their auto insurance policies.

Mercury Car Insurance Discounts

Mercury Insurance has many of the same discounts that other car insurance companies provide. These include a multi-car discount, a multi-policy discount (for bundling in other coverage such as homeowners), a pay-in-full premium discount, being a good driver without accidents or tickets on your driving record for a set period of time, and a discount for being a good student. Other discounts include outfitting your vehicle with an anti-theft device, setting up auto-pay on a monthly basis, and using e-signatures.

Mercury also has a low-mileage insurance discount program called RealDrive. Every month, you send a picture of the odometer to Mercury via a mobile app. Doing so may let you save money on your insurance premium. The lower the mileage, the more you can save. Mercury auto insurance also provides drivers with a discount of up to 5% off their premium just for signing up.

Other Types of Policies from Mercury

Although Mercury doesn’t offer customers as many options as some other insurers, its Mechanical Protection coverage is unusual among auto policies. Mechanical Protection includes 24-hour roadside assistance, rental vehicle assistance, road hazard tire protection, and a choice of licensed vehicle repair facilities. There are several other plans you can get as well, including a factory-like protection plan that covers most of your car’s mechanical and electrical components. This coverage is transferable.

Notably, Mercury Insurance’s Mechanical Protection does not cover normal tune-ups or poor or neglectful maintenance practices, such as irregular oil changes. It applies to vehicles up to seven years old or that have gone 100,000 miles, whichever comes first.

Mercury also authorizes some repair shops. As long as you own the car, Mercury Insurance guarantees workmanship, paint, and bodywork done at authorized mechanic shops. The insurance company also provides you with an online tool you can use to track the status of your vehicle’s repair.

Mercury also provides non-auto-related insurance, such as home insurance, business insurance, condo or renters insurance, and umbrella insurance.

Mercury Financial Fitness

It may not be as well-known or far-reaching as car insurance companies such as Geico, Nationwide, State Farm, Farmers, or Progressive, but Mercury Insurance is still relatively well-off. The independent rating agency, AM Best Rating Services, gave Mercury a Superior A+ rating for its financial strength.

Mercury has total assets of around $4.5 billion as of this writing. It employs more than 7,000 independent agents across 11 states.

Mercury General provides customers with other types of insurance, including homeowners insurance, but their affiliation with other brands is small. However, they did acquire Workmen's Auto Insurance in 2015.
