Even if you have no complaints with your current car insurance company, it’s a good idea to shop around once a year to see if you can get better rates for the same coverage. Speeding tickets and other violations drop off your driving record over time, and you may want to consider reduced coverage amounts as your car ages and loses value. Considering these factors and more, it makes sense to review your coverage every year, whether you’re in the market to switch companies or not.

We’ve taken out the guesswork by surveying real customers about their experience with their car insurance companies, and we’ve analyzed average annual car insurance rates from the 10 largest auto insurance companies by market share. To help you find the best car insurance for you, we’ll look at two of the most well-known car insurance companies out there: Liberty Mutual and Allstate.

Liberty Mutual vs. Allstate: Which Is Cheaper?

We found that Allstate is one of the most expensive choices of the 10 largest car insurance companies.

By comparison, USAA’s average annual rate of $2,537 was the most affordable overall. Geico came in second, with customers paying $3,215 on average. Switching to either insurer could potentially save you a significant amount of money. Depending on your age, driving record, credit score, and other factors, your savings could amount to several thousands of dollars every year.

How We Did This Comparison

U.S. News worked with Quadrant Information Services to provide a report of average insurance rates in all 50 states from the 10 largest national car insurance companies. The rates are based on profiles for both male and female drivers aged 17, 25, 35, and 60. Vehicles used include the 2018 Honda Civic, 2018 Toyota RAV4, 2018 Ford F-150, 2015 Honda Civic, 2015 Toyota RAV4, and 2015 Ford F-150, with annual mileage of 6,000 and 12,000. Three car insurance coverage levels were used, as were credit tiers of good, fair, and poor. Clean driving records and records with one accident, one speeding violation, and one DUI were also used in the calculations. The rates shown here are for comparative purposes only. Individual rates will differ.

We also surveyed 2,799 consumers who filed a car insurance claim in the last five years, asking questions about their car insurance company. These questions covered satisfaction with the ease of filing a claim, customer service, claim status communication, claim resolution, and overall value. We also asked whether they’d recommend the company and if they planned to renew their policy. We used their responses to build our Best Car Insurance Companies ranking and this head-to-head comparison.

Liberty Mutual Auto Insurance Information

With $11.6 billion in policies and a 5 percent market share, publicly held Liberty Mutual offers a wide variety of insurance products including home, auto, fire, workmen’s compensation, and liability policies for both individuals and businesses. Liberty Mutual sells car insurance primarily online and over the phone, offering 24/7 customer support. Car insurance discounts are available for new customers, those who combine auto insurance with other policies, and drivers with a clean driving record. Liberty Mutual offers services designed to help you save money toward your deductible, and it offers a rate guarantee, so your car insurance premium is locked in for 12 months at a time.

Liberty Mutual customers gave the company mixed reviews for satisfaction, with more than half of those surveyed giving top marks for customer service and ease of filing a claim. However, only half were completely satisfied with how their claim was resolved, and fewer than 40 percent gave top marks for value. Worse, just over 17 percent said they were either unsatisfied or very unsatisfied with value. Still, more than 52 percent of respondents said they would recommend Liberty Mutual to someone looking for car insurance, and more than 57 percent said they would likely to renew their policy with the company.

Allstate Auto Insurance Information

One of the most recognized names in car insurance, Allstate was once owned by Sears but became independent in 1995. With $21.4 billion in auto insurance policies underwritten every year, Allstate has a 9 percent market share. Most of its business is handled by local agents, but support services are available online and over the phone as well, providing 24/7 assistance in the event of an emergency. Allstate offers insurance discounts for good students, drivers with a clean driving record, and seniors, along with a multi-policy discount for those who combine homeowners, renters, or another policy with their auto insurance. Allstate is also the parent company of online insurance provider Esurance, as well as Encompass insurance, which is sold primarily through independent insurance agents.

Though Allstate is a well-known company, that doesn’t always translate to happy customers. Allstate ranked close to the bottom for satisfaction in our survey, beating out only Liberty Mutual and American Family. The company received decent scores for its performance overall, with more than 70 percent of respondents saying they were either satisfied or very satisfied with customer service, ease of filing a claim, and how that claim was resolved. On the other hand, close to 16 percent were either unsatisfied or very unsatisfied with customer service and how their claim was resolved. Allstate received a lower score for value, with only a little over 38 percent saying they were very satisfied and another 19 percent saying they were satisfied. Close to 40 percent of those surveyed said they were very unsatisfied. Another 18 percent reported being either unsatisfied or very unsatisfied with value.
