Geico and Farmers are two of the better-known names in car insurance, thanks to clever TV ads with talking geckos or ridiculous instances of insured losses. Although these ads are often amusing, they won’t help you figure out which car insurance company is best for you.

That’s where we come in. To help you find the best car insurance company for you, we collected annual rates and customer satisfaction data from the 10 largest auto insurance companies in the United States. We found big differences in both cost and customer satisfaction between Geico and Farmers, and we also found that choosing the best car insurance company for you can depend on many factors. It may even be that your best choice for car insurance a couple of years ago may not be your best choice now. As your circumstances change, the best and cheapest car insurance company for you may change as well. Even if you’re happy you are with your current insurer, it’s a good idea to shop around once a year. In this section, we take a closer look at Geico and Farmers to see which company is the best for you.

Geico vs. Farmers: Which Is Cheaper?

Our survey found that Geico was not only a more affordable choice overall than Farmers, it had the second-lowest rates of all 10 insurers in our survey. With an average annual rate of $3,215, only USAA was cheaper than Geico. However, USAA insurance is only available to members of the US military, veterans, and the member’s spouse and children. If you’re shopping on price and you don’t qualify for USAA, Geico is worth a look.

With an average cost of $4,194, average annual insurance rates for Farmers are close to $1,000 higher than for Geico, making Farmer’s the fourth most expensive insurer in our survey. But an average is only an average. Farmers might still make sense for you depending on some of the other considerations we’ll look at next.

How We Did This Comparison

U.S. News worked with Quadrant Information Services to provide a report of average insurance rates in all 50 states from the 10 largest national car insurance companies. The rates are based on profiles for both male and female drivers aged 17, 25, 35, and 60. Vehicles used include the 2018 Honda Civic, 2018 Toyota RAV4, 2018 Ford F-150, 2015 Honda Civic, 2015 Toyota RAV4, and 2015 Ford F-150, with annual mileage of 6,000 and 12,000. Three car insurance coverage levels were used, as were credit tiers of good, fair, and poor. Clean driving records and records with one accident, one speeding violation and one DUI were also used in the calculations. The rates shown here are for comparative purposes only. Individual rates will differ.

We also surveyed 2,799 consumers who filed a car insurance claim in the last five years, asking questions about their car insurance company. These questions covered satisfaction with the ease of filing a claim, customer service, claim status communication, claim resolution, and overall value. We also asked whether they’d recommend the company and if they planned to renew their policy. We used their responses to build our Best Car Insurance Companies ranking and this head-to-head comparison.

Geico

  • Good customer service
  • Customers say it’s a good value
  • Best for families with teens

Farmers

  • Cheaper for drivers with one DUI
  • Best customer service scores
  • Higher rates than some of the competition

Geico Auto Insurance Information

Known more for its cute gecko mascot than the origins of its name, Geico stands for Government Employees Insurance Company. The name dates to when Geico only served employees of the federal government and people in the military. However, anyone can get an insurance policy with them now. Geico insures 27 million vehicles each year with 16 million policies, giving it a 13 percent market share. Geico is a subsidiary of Berkshire Hathaway, making it a stock insurance company.

Geico does most of its business online or via phone, but it does have local agents. It also has live help available via phone 24/7 and a mobile app for reporting claims and tracking your claim status. Available auto insurance discounts with Geico include multi-policy discounts, along with reduced rates for good students, military personnel, drivers over the age of 50, and drivers of cars with certain safety features.

Geico ranked number four of the 10 insurers in our survey. While Geico didn’t lead all competitors in any one category, it is notable that scores were consistently good across the all questions we asked. With almost 70 percent of respondents saying they were either satisfied or very satisfied, Geico also has one of the best overall scores for value. In the end, 67 percent of those surveyed said they were either likely or very likely to recommend Geico to someone looking for car insurance.

Farmers Auto Insurance Information

Known for its familiar jingle and amusing ads, Farmers underwrites 19 million car insurance policies and has a 4 percent market share. It is wholly owned by policyholders, not shareholders. Farmers sells car insurance online, as well as through local Farmers and independent insurance agents. Farmers car insurance is available in all 50 states, and discounts are available for good students, seniors, and by combining multiple policies such as a homeowners or renter’s policy with auto insurance. The discounts you’re eligible for may vary depending on where you live.

Farmers received among the highest customer service scores of any insurer in our survey. More than 80 percent of respondents said they were either satisfied or very satisfied with Farmers. Customers also gave Farmers high points for ease of filing a claim, with the company second only to USAA and tied with Travelers. However, lower satisfaction scores for value and claim resolution pulled down Farmers’ overall score, landing the company in fifth place for overall satisfaction in our survey.

Geico and Farmers Car Insurance: Which Is Cheapest for Teens?

Company

Single 17-year-old male

Farmers

$8,521.97

$9,144.04

Geico

$5,653.55

$6,278.96

Geico wins this one hands down. We found Geico’s car insurance rates to be cheaper for teens by thousands of dollars for both females and males. Our survey found that 17-year-old females paid an average of $5,654 annually with Geico, almost $3,000 less than the $8,522 reported by female teens with Farmers. The rates were higher for males, but the $3,000 in savings were almost identical, with average rates of $6,279 with Geico and $9,144 with Farmers.

We found that Geico is not only cheaper than Farmers for teens, but it is also the second most-affordable insurer of the 10 included in our survey, trailing only USAA. And because USAA is only available to members of the US military, veterans, and a member’s spouse and children, Geico may be the cheapest choice for the vast majority of people who need to put a teen on their auto insurance policy.

Both Geico and Farmers offer car insurance discounts for students who maintain good grades. Geico also has discounts for full-time students who are members of certain fraternities or sororities, and Farmers offers a discount for students living away from home.

For a married 35-year-old male, the difference amounted to about $250, or $2,312 with Geico and $2,558 with Farmers. By the time drivers reached the age of 60, the annual savings were only about $150, with married men paying an average of $2,283 with Geico and $2,448 with Farmers.

We also found that Geico didn’t have the same cost advantage over other competitors with older men that it did with younger drivers. By the time drivers reached the age of 35, USAA, Travelers, State Farm, Progressive, and American Family Insurance all had better rates, though the rates with some were very close.
