Geico and Farmers are two of the better-known names in car insurance, thanks to clever TV ads with talking geckos or ridiculous instances of insured losses. Although these ads are often amusing, they won’t help you figure out which car insurance company is best for you.

That’s where we come in. To help you find the best car insurance company for you, we collected annual rates and customer satisfaction data from the 10 largest auto insurance companies in the United States. We found big differences in both cost and customer satisfaction between Geico and Farmers, with Geico winning out on both fronts. For most people, Geico is likely to be the better choice.

That said, we also found that choosing the best car insurance company for you can depend on many factors. It may even be that your best choice for car insurance a couple of years ago may not be your best choice now. As your circumstances change, the best and cheapest car insurance company for you may change as well. Even if you’re happy you are with your current insurer, it’s a good idea to shop around once a year. In this section, we take a closer look at Geico and Farmers to see which company is the best for you.

Geico Auto Insurance Rating

Rating: 4.17/5

Known more for its cute gecko mascot than the origins of its name, Geico stands for Government Employees Insurance Company. The name dates to when Geico only served employees of the federal government and people in the military. However, anyone can get an insurance policy with them now. Geico insures 27 million vehicles each year with 16 million policies, giving it a 13% market share. Geico is a subsidiary of Berkshire Hathaway, making it a stock insurance company.

Geico does most of its business online or via phone, but it does have local agents. It also has live help available via phone 24/7 and a mobile app for reporting claims and tracking your claim status. Available auto insurance discounts with Geico include a rate cut for having multiple policies with the company, along with reduced rates for good students, military personnel, drivers over the age of 50, and drivers of cars with certain safety features.

Geico ranked number two of the nine insurers in our survey. While Geico didn’t lead all competitors in any one category, it is notable that scores were consistently very good across all questions we asked. With more than 73% of respondents saying they were either satisfied or very satisfied, Geico also has one of the best overall scores for value. In the end, 73% of those surveyed said they were either likely or very likely to recommend Geico to someone looking for car insurance.

Farmers Auto Insurance Rating

Known for its familiar jingle and amusing ads, Farmers underwrites 19 million car insurance policies and has a 4% market share. It is wholly owned by policyholders, not shareholders. Farmers sells car insurance online, as well as through local Farmers and independent insurance agents. Farmers car insurance is available in all 50 states, and discounts are available for good students, seniors, and by combining multiple policies such as a homeowners or renter’s policy with auto insurance. The discounts you’re eligible for may vary depending on where you live.

Fifth-place Farmers received consistently good scores in response to most questions in our survey, including ease of filing a claim, customer service, status updates, claim resolution, and value. Respondents were very consistent in their responses, giving Farmers neither excellent nor poor scores in any category. Perhaps it was this unexceptional performance, combined with some of the highest rates in our study, that led respondents to give Farmers lower scores when asked how likely they were to either recommend the company to others or to renew their own policies. Just 37% of respondents said they were very likely to recommend Farmers to someone shopping for car insurance.

How We Did This Comparison

At U.S. News, we’re all about helping people make life’s important decisions. Our college rankings, launched in 1983, set the standard in educational rankings. Our rankings in other fields, like healthcare, government, and the automotive sphere, help people and thought leaders make choices that make lives better. Now we’re continuing to empower you with the information you need to make the right choices for your life with our Best Car Insurance Rankings.

We surveyed 2,732 consumers who filed a car insurance claim in the last five years, asking questions about their car insurance company. Of the survey respondents, 283 filed a claim with Geico and 73 filed a claim with Farmers. These questions covered satisfaction with the ease of filing a claim, customer service, claim status communication, claim resolution, and overall value. We also asked whether they’d recommend the company and if they planned to renew their policy. We used their responses to build our Best Car Insurance Companies Rankings and this head-to-head comparison.

Our Study Rates

To get comparative insurance rates for this study, U.S. News also worked with Quadrant Information Services to analyze a report of insurance rates in all 50 states from the 10 largest national car insurance companies, though not every company operates in every state. Quadrant obtained publicly available rate data that car insurers file with state regulators. Our study rates are based on profiles for both male and female drivers aged 25, 35, and 60. Vehicles used include the 2015 Honda Civic, 2015 Toyota RAV4, and 2015 Ford F-150, with annual mileage ranging from 6,000 and 12,000. Three car insurance coverage levels were used, as were credit tiers of good, fair, and poor. Clean driving records and records with one accident, one speeding violation, and one DUI were also used in the calculations of certain driver archetypes.

To get the study rates shown here, we computed the mean rate for male and female drivers aged 25, 35, and 60 who drive 12,000 miles per year and have medium coverage, good credit, and a clean driving record. The rates shown here are for comparative purposes only and should not be considered “average” rates available by individual insurers. Because car insurance rates are based on individual factors, your car insurance rates will differ from the rates shown here.

Geico and Farmers Car Insurance: Which Is Cheaper?

Our survey found that Geico was not only a more affordable choice overall than Farmers, it had the second-lowest rates of all the insurers in our survey. With an average annual study rate of $1,168, only USAA was cheaper than Geico. However, USAA insurance is only available to members of the US military, veterans, and their families. If you’re shopping on price and you don’t qualify for USAA, Geico is worth a look.

With an average cost in our study of $1,682, average annual insurance representative rates for Farmers are more than $500 higher than for Geico, making Farmer’s the third-most expensive insurer in our survey. But an average is only an average. Farmers might still make sense for you depending on some of the other considerations we’ll look at next.

This head-to-head comparison looks mainly at cost. For more information, check out our full ranking of the best car insurance companies and find out what real customers say about Geico, Farmers, and their competitors.

Geico

In our survey, Geico proved to be cheaper than Farmers for men of any age, but the savings tapered off as drivers got older. A 25-year-old representative male profile paid $1,269 annually with Geico on average, or about $727 less than the $1,996 average representative rate we found for a sample male of the same age with Farmers. For a representative 35-year-old male profile, the difference amounted to about $485, or $1,134 with Geico and $1,619 with Farmers. By the time our representative male driver profiles reached the age of 60, the annual savings were about $440, with the profiles paying an average study rate of $1,067 with Geico and $1,507 with Farmers.

We also found that while Geico maintained a cost advantage for the older male profiles with all competitors except USAA, the gap closed as the profiles aged. By the time the profiles reached the age of 35, Travelers, State Farm, and Progressive all had study rates within about $165 of Geico, where only Travelers was within $150 of Geico for the younger group. State Farm was $200 higher, and Progressive was $400 more for your representative 25-year old male profile.

To find the average rates in our study based on gender and age, we created driver profiles for males in each of the following ages: 25 years, 35 years, and 60 years. The profiles also have a clean driving record, insurance coverage for 12,000 miles per year, a medium level of insurance coverage, and a good credit score. We used three vehicles for our driver profiles: the 2015 Honda Civic, 2015 Toyota RAV4, and 2015 Ford F-150.

On average, we found female driver profiles in our study had cheaper study rates with Geico than with Farmers, though the cost gap narrowed for older driver profiles. A typical 25-year-old female profile had a representative rate of $1,365 annually on average with Geico in our study, almost $550 less than the $1,908 study rate we found with Farmers. For our 35-year-old female representative profiles, the difference dropped to about $512, or $1,119 with Geico and $1,631 with Farmers. By age 60, the difference was less than $400, with representative female profiles in our study paying an average annual premium of $1,053 with Geico and $1,431 with Farmers.

As we saw with the male profiles in our study, Geico remained the most affordable choice for female profiles of any age, except for those eligible for coverage with USAA. The difference in our sample rates was just not as dramatic for older women as it was for younger ones.

We created driver profiles for females in each of the following ages: 25 years, 35 years, and 60 years. The profiles have a clean driving record, 12,000 miles per year, a medium level of insurance coverage, and a good credit score. We used three vehicles for our driver profiles: the 2015 Honda Civic, 2015 Toyota RAV4, and 2015 Ford F-150.

Geico and Farmers Car Insurance: Which Is Cheapest for High Mileage?

12,000 miles annually

Farmers

$1,682

Geico

$1,168

On average, Geico proved to be a much less expensive choice than Farmers for our representative driver profiles who rack up 12,000 miles per year, with savings amounting to about $514 per year on average. Our study rates for driver profiles who travel 12,000 miles per year were $1,168 with Geico, compared to $1,682 with Farmers. For this group, Geico again proved to be the second-cheapest insurer in our study, trailing only USAA.

To find the average rates in our study based on annual mileage, we created driver profiles for customers who drove 12,000 miles per year. The profiles have a clean driving record, a medium level of insurance coverage, and a good credit score. We used three vehicles for our driver profiles: the 2015 Honda Civic, 2015 Toyota RAV4, and 2015 Ford F-150.

Geico and Farmers Car Insurance: Which Is Cheapest for Low Mileage?

6,000 miles annually

Farmers

$1,670

Geico

$1,107

Our sample driver profiles who put on fewer miles each year saw even greater savings with Geico. We found the average annual study rates were more than $560 lower for Geico than Farmers for those profiles that travel only 6,000 miles per year. The average rates in our study for this group were $1,107 with Geico, and $1,670 with Farmers. Interestingly, our study found that driving less doesn’t necessarily save that much with any insurance company. The difference in representative rates between 6,000 and 12,000 miles was about $61 with Geico and only $12 with Farmers. In fact, the difference with most companies in our study was less than $100. The lone exception was State Farm at $120.

To find the average rates in our study based on annual mileage, we created driver profiles for customers who drove 6,000 miles per year. The profiles also have a clean driving record, a medium level of insurance coverage, and a good credit score. We used three vehicles for our driver profiles: the 2015 Honda Civic, 2015 Toyota RAV4, and 2015 Ford F-150.

Geico and Farmers Car Insurance: Which Is Cheapest for Good Credit?

Good credit

Farmers

$1,642

Geico

$1,175

Our representative driver profiles with good credit saved a lot of money with Geico compared to Farmers, amounting to over $450 per year on average. We found the representative rates for a driver profile with good credit were $1,175 with Geico, and $1,642 with Farmers. In our study, Geico was the second-cheapest insurer for this profile, with only USAA having lower study rates. It’s worth noting that improving and maintaining a good credit score is one of the best ways to save on car insurance, and it can have more of an effect on what you pay than age, gender, or even driving record.

Our study reviewed the effects of credit score on car insurance rates using male and female driver profiles aged 25 years, 35 years, and 60 years. We created a profile for each level of credit score (good, fair, and poor) and assigned the profiles a clean driving record, a medium level of insurance coverage, and 12,000 miles of annual driving. The 2015 Honda Civic, 2015 Toyota RAV4, and 2015 Ford F-150 are the vehicles used in our analysis.

Geico and Farmers Car Insurance: Which Is Cheapest for Bad Credit?

Poor credit

Farmers

$2,669

Geico

$1,855

For our representative driver profiles with poor credit scores, we found that Geico was a much more affordable choice than Farmers, resulting in a savings of more than $810 between the two companies' study rates. Our representative driver profiles with poor credit paid an average of $1,855 with Geico, and $2,669 with Farmers. Our study found the difference between representative rates for good and poor credit with either company was substantial, at about $680 per year with Geico and more than $1,025 with Farmers. This really shows the impact your credit score can have on insurance rates, and how important it is to maintain good credit.

To compare the effects of credit score on car insurance rates, we used male and female driver profiles aged 25 years, 35 years, and 60 years. We created a profile for each level of credit score (good, fair, and poor) and assigned the profiles a clean driving record, a medium level of insurance coverage, and 12,000 miles of annual mileage. The 2015 Honda Civic, 2015 Toyota RAV4, and 2015 Ford F-150 are the vehicles used in our analysis.

Geico and Farmers Car Insurance: Which Is Cheapest for Good Drivers?

Clean driving record

Farmers

$1,682

Geico

$1,168

Representative rates for the profile with a clean record with Geico averaged $1,168 annually, and $1,682 with Farmers. For this profile, Geico was again the obvious choice over not only Farmers but all other insurers in our survey except USAA.

We compared driver profiles including those with a clean record, those with one speeding violation, those with one accident, and those with one instance of driving under the influence (DUI). These driving record representative profiles included 25-, 35-, and 60-year-old males and females with 12,000 miles of driving per year, a medium level of insurance coverage, and a good credit score. Vehicles used in the analysis are the 2015 Honda Civic, 2015 Toyota RAV4, and 2015 Ford F-150.

With 1 speeding violation

Farmers

$2,099

Geico

$1,510

Driver profiles in our study with a single speeding ticket on their driving record were also better off with Geico than Farmers. The average annual study rate we found for profiles with one speeding violation was $1,510 with Geico and $2,099 with Farmers, for a difference of about $590 annually. That works out to almost $350 more per year for our representative driver profiles with Geico compared to those with a clean record, and a bump of about $417 with Farmers.

To analyze these rates, we particularly looked at driver profiles with one speeding violation.

Geico and Farmers Car Insurance: Which Is Cheapest After an Accident?

With 1 accident

Farmers

$2,446

Geico

$1,802

On average, an accident brought a rate hike of more than $600 annually for the rates in our study with either Geico or Farmers, but we found both the rate increase and the overall premium were lower with Geico. Representative rates with Geico jumped to $1,802 after a crash, or $634 more than the average for driver profiles with a clean record. With Farmers, the increase brought annual study rates to $2,446 on average, or an increase of about $764 per year over the profile with a spotless driving history.

We analyzed driver profiles with one accident to find these average rates.

Geico and Farmers Car Insurance: Which Is Cheapest After a DUI?

With 1 DUI

Farmers

$2,640

Geico

$2,958

Here is the one category where we found lower representative rates with Farmers than with Geico. We found average annual rates in our study of $2,640 with Farmers after a DUI, compared to $2,958 with Geico. That represents an increase of more than $955 per year with Farmers compared to the sample driver profiles with a clean record, and $1,790 annually with Geico. This also proves that driving sober pays off in many ways.

We compared driver profiles with one instance of driving under the influence (DUI) to arrive at these average rates in our study. These driving record representative profiles included 25-, 35-, and 60-year-old males and females with 12,000 miles of mileage per year, a medium level of insurance coverage, and a good credit score. Vehicles used in the analysis are the 2015 Honda Civic, 2015 Toyota RAV4, and 2015 Ford F-150.
