Geico vs. Allstate: Which Is Cheaper?

In our survey of the top 10 car insurance companies in the United States, we found Geico to be among the least expensive and Allstate to be among the most expensive. Geico’s overall average auto insurance rate is $3,215, putting it in second place on our cheapest car insurance list. Allstate is at the other end of the list, in ninth place with an average auto insurance rate of $4,888. That’s almost $1,700 more than Geico’s average rate.

How We Did This Comparison

U.S. News worked with Quadrant Information Services to provide a report of average insurance rates in all 50 states from the 10 largest national car insurance companies. The rates are based on profiles for both male and female drivers aged 17, 25, 35, and 60. Vehicles used include the 2018 Honda Civic, 2018 Toyota RAV4, 2018 Ford F-150, 2015 Honda Civic, 2015 Toyota RAV4, and 2015 Ford F-150, with annual mileage of 6,000 and 12,000. Three car insurance coverage levels were used, as were credit tiers of good, fair, and poor. Clean driving records and records with one accident, one speeding violation, and one DUI were also used in the calculations. The rates shown here are for comparative purposes only. Individual rates will differ.

We also surveyed 2,799 consumers who filed a car insurance claim in the last five years, asking questions about their car insurance company. These questions covered satisfaction with the ease of filing a claim, customer service, claim status communication, claim resolution, and overall value. We also asked whether they’d recommend the company and if they planned to renew their policy. We used their responses to build our Best Car Insurance Companies ranking and this head-to-head comparison.

Geico

  • Very low rates
  • Easy to file a claim
  • Good ranking for customer satisfaction

Allstate

Geico Auto Insurance Information

The Geico gecko is climbing on sticky feet up the insurance market ladder. In 2017, the company gained .91 points to claim 12.83 percent of the auto insurance market, putting it in second place.

In our survey, Geico scored best with users for the ease of filing an insurance claim. Its lowest score was for overall satisfaction with the value of their auto insurance, with only about a third of respondents giving it top scores. This, even though we separately found that Geico was among the least expensive insurers out there.

Allstate Auto Insurance Information

You’re in good hands with Allstate, but fewer people are choosing car insurance from this company. In 2017, Allstate lost .43 points of its market share and went from being the third-largest to fourth-largest auto insurer in the country, with 9.29 percent of the market.

Like Geico, Allstate’s highest score in our survey was for the ease of filing a claim. Also like Geico, its lowest score was for the value respondents felt they got from their auto insurance. It’s interesting to note that this was the case for one of the most expensive auto insurers (Allstate) and one of the cheapest (Geico).
