2019 Cadillac XT5 Performance Review

Scorecard

Performance: 6.7

The 2019 Cadillac XT5 is a comfortable cruiser with stable, mundane handling and good acceleration. Compared with other luxury midsize SUVs, however, the XT5's performance is a bit lackluster.

  • The eight-speed transmission shifts smoothly. On the highway, it doesn't hesitate to deliver a downshift when you need to accelerate, but more aggressive drivers might think it lags. For them, there's a Sport mode." -- Edmunds
  • "Cadillac's latest crossover is as easy on the road as it is on the eyes, providing a quiet ride that strikes a good balance between feedback and comfort." -- Autoweek (2017)
  • "For as much as we came to like about the styling of the XT5, there is a bit of a sore spot: driving it." -- Autoblog (2017)

Acceleration and Power

The lone available engine is a 310-horsepower 3.6-liter V6 mated to a smooth-shifting eight-speed automatic transmission. It has more than enough power for city and highway driving, but shoppers interested in brute power may have to look elsewhere. Front-wheel drive is standard, and all-wheel drive is available. The XT5 gets an EPA-estimated 19 mpg in the city and 26 mpg on the highway, which is slightly above-average for the class.

  • In routine traffic, the 3.6-liter V6 feels strong enough to accomplish its mission and never comes across as lacking. But it's not a powerhouse like some rivals. At our test track, the dash to 60 mph took us 6.8 seconds." -- Edmunds
  • Surprisingly for a crossover, the XT5 comes to life the harder it's pushed, but we wish the engine were slightly more punchy and potent. Even if most XT5 drivers won't push their cars too hard, we expect more from the company that just delivered the excellently balanced CT6." -- Autoblog (2017)
  • The XT5's V6 engine is also rare given the turbocharged 4-cylinder engines of most competitors, and although its 310 horsepower is impressive, resulting acceleration is merely average." -- Autotrader (2018)

Handling and Braking

With a well-planted ride, the XT5 should appeal to comfort-oriented shoppers. While it has stable handling, some may find its driving dynamics mundane.

  • "The Caddy feels coordinated and somewhat light on its feet. There isn't much body roll, and it tracks cleanly around corners. It's not the sort of SUV that encourages you to seek out winding roads, but it doesn't discourage it either." -- Edmunds
  • "It offers plenty of comfort, especially on long trips, yet it retains good steering feel and a solid grip on the road, even when being driven aggressively." -- Kelley Blue Book
  • On top trim levels, selectable drive modes include an assertive Sport mode with stiff suspension settings, shift points that hold revs and sharper steering. Touring mode smooths out the ride and performance in a good way for road trips and highway drives. Unfortunately, those same top trim levels come with 20-in wheels that don't get along well with pockmarked pavement. Seek out bumps on a test drive." -- Autotrader (2018)
