2007 Cadillac STS Performance Review

Note: This performance review was created when the 2007 Cadillac STS was new.

Performance: 8.5

The majority of experts agree that both engine options of the 2007 Cadillac STS provides solid performance for its class. Motor Week calls it "every inch the factory-sanctioned hot-rod."

The 2007 Cadillac STS is available in two engine types, each with an automatic transmission. "We found little to complain about under the hood," say the experts at Edmunds, "the standard 3.6-liter, six-cylinder engine is able to get the big sedan up to speed with surprising gusto." Reviewers at the Seattle Post Intelligencer think performance-oriented drivers and techies will "find plenty to like in the STS."

Acceleration and Power

Reviewers praised both of the STS's engine options. The standard 3.6-liter V6 makes 255-horsepower and generates 252 lb-ft of torque. MSN feels it's the "best buy in the STS line." Edmunds says the V6 packs a powerful punch on the roads. "The standard V6 is able to get the big sedan up to speed with surprising gusto." The V6 has EPA estimated gas mileage of 16 miles per gallon in the city, and 25 mpg on the highway.

For those looking for more power, the V8 delivers, according to experts. It makes 320-horsepower and 315 lb-ft of torque. MSN feels the V8 "holds more power than I could possibly use. And the engine sound during acceleration was perfectly tuned to convey confidence and power." For the V8 engine, the EPA estimates 15 mpg in the city, and 24 mpg on the highway. CNET says it "drinks like a fish" and has "absurd fuel economy and range."

Reviewers are generally pleased with the transmission, both the V6's 5 speed automatic, and the V8's 6-speed automatic. The V8 gets an added boost with the newly added Hydra-Matic six-speed transmission. On the options side, drivers can choose rear-wheel drive, or all-wheel drive for better all-weather traction. Some experts, though, feel something is missing: "about the only thing lacking from this car is a five or six-speed manual transmission, a feature some enthusiasts may desire," says Kelley Blue Book.

Handling and Braking

The Cadillac STS has a four-wheel independent suspension that reviewers at Car.com call "commendable." Autobytel says "the suspension and tires keep things steady on those hard-core back roads." A reviewer at Road and Track, however, found the suspension to be "softer than [he] prefers." Car and Driver echoed similar comments, noting the car's "overly soft base suspension tuning," but add, "though the steering is numb, with uplevel suspension and V-8 power, the STS can dance with the best." Motor Week says, "The STS-V's ride is super solid, but both comfortable and silent, while its combination of smooth handling and unlimited passing power allow you to quickly leave country lanes and tangled commuter traffic behind." They also tout it as a "very tight, capable car, with a much more athletic feel than its predecessor (the Seville)."

The optional Magnetic Ride Control -- adaptive suspension system -- received mixed reviews from experts. The reviewers at Cars.com thought the ride seemed "worse" with it, while the experts at MSN say it provides superb control over unwanted body motions when encountering such things as severe dips.

Reviewers liked the brakes on the STS, which Car and Driver calls "strong and easy to modulate." They continue by adding "your foot quickly learns where anti-lock manifests."
