2017 Buick Regal Interior Review

Note: This interior review was created when the 2017 Buick Regal was new.

Interior: 7.4

Although the quality of the 2017 Buick Regal’s interior is adequate, other automakers have improved the quality of their cabins, while the Regal’s remains largely unchanged since its 2011 redesign. Seating is supportive in the front, but many will find the back seats too small. Additionally, the Regal’s trunk is below average for a nonhybrid midsize car. On the positive side, the intuitive placement of controls and the infotainment system’s ease of use contribute to a hassle-free driver experience.

  • "Inside, the 2017 Buick Regal features a sleek dashboard with minimal button clutter. Although the quality of the materials is satisfactory, the appearance is upscale, if not fully luxury-grade." -- Edmunds
  • "Inside, the Regal possesses a well-organized dashboard along with a generally high level of material quality, and goodies like leather upholstery, heated front seats and dual-zone automatic climate control." -- Left Lane News
  • "The design and materials are all first-rate, and we especially like the easily readable instruments, the available user-friendly navigation system, and the steering-wheel-mounted thumb wheel for scrolling through function menus." -- Kelley Blue Book (2015)

The Buick Regal has five leather-appointed seats. The front seats are heated, and the driver’s seat is power-adjustable. Upgrades include a power-adjustable passenger seat and a heated steering wheel. Also, the GS trim adds sportier front bucket seats along with sport pedals that give it a performance look and feel on the inside.

While the front seats are comfortable, the rear seats are a bit of a squeeze, mainly due to the Regal’s sloping roofline. It’s good for appearance, but bad for interior rear-seat space. As some rivals have improved their seating, Buick hasn’t upgraded the Regal’s interior to keep up.

The Regal features two complete sets of LATCH systems on the two outboard rear seats. The middle rear seat has a tether but only one lower anchor.

  • "Buick's ambitions to present the Regal as a more premium model aren't as effective as when it first came out, though, mostly due to the rising quality of its competition. Also, its lack of rear passenger space, namely in the head- and legroom departments, is something to consider if you plan to carry a full load of taller adults regularly." -- Edmunds
  • "The downside is the Regal's rear-seat headroom, with the sleek roofline meaning passengers more than 6-feet tall will likely rub against the headliner." -- Kelley Blue Book (2015)
  • "Despite its small exterior dimensions, Regal enjoys expansive front legroom. Headroom is quite good as well, even beneath the sunroof housing. The seats are comfortable and supportive. -- Consumer Guide (2013)

Interior Features

Standard features in the Regal include dual-zone automatic climate control, a rearview camera, OnStar with 4G LTE and a built-in Wi-Fi hot spot, and Buick’s IntelliLink infotainment system with an 8-inch touch screen, a seven-speaker sound system, a USB port, Bluetooth, satellite radio, voice recognition, Apple CarPlay, and Android Auto.

Available features include push-button start, a power moonroof, a nine-speaker Bose sound system, and navigation. Available safety features include forward collision alert, front automatic braking, adaptive cruise control, front and rear parking sensors with rear cross traffic alert, and blind spot monitoring with lane change alert and lane departure warning.

The Regal is well connected and user-friendly on the inside. With Buick’s IntelliLink infotainment system, you can use both voice commands and smartphone-style gestures. Apple CarPlay and Android Auto make the system even more like a smartphone, since you can bring up your apps on the infotainment screen. Voice commands are easily heard by the Regal’s voice recognition system, which understands a large number of commands. The display features buttons that don’t hamper use of essential controls.

  • "The standard 8-inch touchscreen powers the IntelliLink infotainment system, which features large icons and Pandora radio compatibility as well as Apple CarPlay and Android Auto smartphone integration. … Buick includes the same screen on every model, as opposed to making you pay more for a premium display as many competitors do." -- Edmunds
  • "The [IntelliLink] setup lets users flick, swipe and drag through icons and lists in the manner of a tablet or smartphone, and it features a voice recognition system for hands-free calls, destination entering, song selection and more. Its ‘natural language’ functioning can recognize a staggering number of phrases - effectively eliminating the need for the clunky and cumbersome memorized commands." -- Left Lane News
  • "The dashboard button count goes down from 17 last year to 7. This isn't always progress, but the major controls you want in a hurry are easily found." -- Car and Driver (2014)

At 14.2 cubic feet, the Buick Regal’s trunk affords an adequate amount of space. However, when compared to other midsize cars – particularly other nonhybrids – the Regal is near the bottom of the list in terms of trunk space. The trunk’s hinges, though they don’t smash your stuff, compromise available space, leaving less usable cargo room than you’d expect.

  • "Out back, the Regal offers a decent 14.2 cubic feet of trunk space, which is marginally better than some competitors." -- Edmunds
  • "The trunk has sickle-shaped hinges that intrude slightly on overall space, but they're covered so they don't crush cargo. Small-items storage is just average; included are two cupholders and a small covered console bin." -- Consumer Guide (2013)
  • “There is a wide opening to both the cargo area and into the cabin when the split backseat is folded." -- Cars.com (2012)
