2015 Buick Regal Performance Review

Note: This performance review was created when the 2015 Buick Regal was new.

Performance: 7.7

Most test drivers say the 2015 Buick Regal has surprisingly sharp handling, particularly on the Regal GS model. Some write that the base turbocharged engine is powerful, but others complain that it feels sluggish at low speeds. They say the eAssist model isn’t very fast, but it gets very good fuel economy for the class.

  • "Regardless of the model you choose, the Regal offers sharp responses, especially in the sport-oriented GS." -- Kelley Blue Book
  • "The Regal GS still delivers fully athletic agility thanks to its sport suspension, 20-in wheels and powerful brakes. Even hardcore enthusiasts will be impressed with its high-performance dose of power and track-caliber capabilities." -- Autotrader
  • "The GS is, unsurprisingly, our choice of the Regal lineup, not in small part due to the attention Buick slathered on it to produce a truly buttoned-down, engaging ride." -- Autoweek (2014)

Acceleration and Power

The 2015 Buick Regal comes with a turbocharged 2.0-liter four-cylinder engine that produces 259 horsepower. A mild-hybrid eAssist powertrain is available, which includes a 2.4-liter four-cylinder engine and a small electric motor that combine to make 182 horsepower. All Regal models come standard with a six-speed automatic transmission. A six-speed manual is optional on front-wheel drive GS models. According to the EPA, the 2015 Buick Regal gets 21/30 mpg city/highway, which is low for the class. The Regal eAssist gets 25/36 mpg city/highway, which is very good for an upscale midsize car.

Some reviewers praise the base Regal’s strong acceleration, but others say the engine struggles at lower speeds. They note that the Regal isn’t particularly fast with the optional eAssist powertrain, but its fuel-saving engine start-stop feature turns the engine on and off seamlessly when the car is stopped to save fuel. A few critics write that the Regal’s automatic transmission sometimes downshifts too slowly, which can hurt acceleration.

  • "The 2.0-liter turbocharged 4-cylinder offers plenty of torque and smooth, quiet operation in the Regal and Regal GS." -- Kelley Blue Book
  • "Unfortunately, the turbocharged engine does suffer from a noticeable lag when launching from a standstill." -- Autotrader
  • "… [All-wheel drive] also seems to bog down the car coming out of corners. That's partially the fault of the turbo four, which still suffers a bit of lag, and the six-speed automatic, which occasionally downshifts too late." -- Automobile Magazine (2014)
  • "The 2.4-liter engine with battery assist is very refined, if not especially fast. The transitions when the gas engine shuts off at stops and automatically restarts when the brake pedal is released are exceptionally smooth." -- Consumer Guide (2013)

Handling and Braking

The 2015 Buick Regal comes standard with front-wheel drive, and all-wheel drive is optional. The GS model comes with larger brakes and a driver-adjustable sport suspension. Reviewers report that the Regal has surprisingly agile handling, especially in the GS trim. They are particularly impressed with the Regal GS’ powerful upgraded brakes. They also note that all Regal models have a quiet, comfortable ride.

  • "This Regal's Euro-tuned suspension was designed to show off its athleticism on quick-cutting switchbacks and in high-speed maneuvers." -- Autotrader
  • "While the Regal GS has a stiffer ride than the rest of the lineup, all Regals are smooth and exceptionally quiet on the road." -- Kelley Blue Book
  • "Out on the road, the Regal isn't a true sport sedan, but it offers tighter handling than one might expect in addition to a luxuriously smooth ride." -- Left Lane News
  • "The GS's big Brembo brakes (13.6-inch vented four-pot front vs. 12.6-inch single-pistons in standard Regals) make themselves known, too, with markedly better stopping power when jumping on the brakes." -- Autoweek (2014)
