2009 Buick LaCrosse Overview

When it was new, reviewers were disappointed with the base 2009 LaCrosse’s performance. They said it had a noisy V6 engine and lacked the passing power of competitors. Many test drivers thought that other large cars offered a more exciting driving experience along with better fuel economy. However, some test drivers thought the V8-powered LaCrosse Super provided adequate performance.

The LaCrosse offers a pleasingly smooth ride, but reviewers found that the antiquated four-speed automatic transmission hurt performance, especially since many 2009 large cars offer five- and six-speed automatics that are more refined. In terms of handling, reviewers noted that the LaCrosse’s comfort-tuned suspension was less nimble than some other large cars.

Some test drivers liked the LaCrosse’s comfortable interior, but others were let down by some cheap plastic interior surfaces. A few reviewers also complained about back-seat legroom. While they said the gauges are easy to read and well-placed, they found the interior styling to be bland and generic. Notable trims include the LaCrosse Super, which sports a 5.3-liter V8 and includes leather seating. While Bluetooth and parking sensors were available on the 2009 LaCrosse, other high-tech features like navigation are not available.

Other Cars to Consider

The 2009 Ford Taurus ranks highly in the class in part because of its high safety scores. The Taurus offers more cargo space, a roomy interior and good performance. In terms of engine performance and handling, reviewers gave the Taurus the edge over the LaCrosse. The cars also have comparable fuel economy. Still, the Taurus offers better interior quality, and is one of few large sedans with available all-wheel drive.

If you’re seeking a more refined large sedan, the highly-ranked 2009 Toyota Avalon is worth a look. The Avalon gets slightly better fuel economy than the LaCrosse and high safety scores. Reviewers praised the Avalon’s spacious and luxurious interior. Compared with the LaCrosse and Taurus, reviewers thought the Avalon was superior in terms of performance and comfort. Because the Avalon is a pricier car, you may want to consider the 2008 Avalon to save money.
