2020 Buick Encore Interior Review

Scorecard

Interior: 7.3

The 2020 Buick Encore has a well-insulated cabin with some high-grade plastics and soft-touch surfaces. Passenger space is decent, and the infotainment system is easy to use.

  • "You should be impressed by the Encore's handsome cabin, which features high-quality materials. It was upgraded two years ago, and we think this made a big difference in terms of both its appearance and its functionality." -- Autotrader
  • Build and materials quality are on par with that of other vehicles in the class, but the Encore’s cabin does look dated because of its many dashboard buttons." -- Edmunds (2019)
  • "To keep the Encore's cabin in line with Buick's high standards, the company employs Active Noise Cancellation technology combined with ample insulation and Quiet Tuning engineering. By using the car's speakers, Active Noise Cancellation sends out noise-canceling sound waves that help hush wind, road and engine noise." -- Kelley Blue Book (2017)

Seating

The five-seat Encore comes standard with cloth upholstery and a six-way power-adjustable driver’s seat. Leather-appointed seats are available, as are heated front seats, a six-way power-adjustable passenger seat, and a heated steering wheel.

Head- and legroom are fairly generous in both rows, and two average-sized adults can fit comfortably in the rear. For installing child safety seats, there are two complete sets of LATCH connectors in the second row, but a rear-facing child seat won’t fit back there unless you move the seat in front of it all the way forward.

  • Though it's small, the Encore has plenty of space for front passengers. Adults will fit in the rear without too much trouble." -- Edmunds (2019)
  • ... up to four passengers will have decent amounts of space in any seat. Don't expect to fit three across on the rear bench comfortably, though, as the Encore is surprisingly narrow despite what its proportions might suggest." -- New York Daily News (2017)
  • Whether rendered in cloth and Leatherette or available leather, the cabin offers room for five with a 60/40-split rear bench that accommodates two average-sized adults plus a kid in the center spot." -- Kelley Blue Book (2016)

Interior Features

This Buick has a generous list of standard features, including the IntelliLink infotainment system, an 8-inch touch screen, Apple CarPlay, Android Auto, a Wi-Fi hot spot, two USB ports, Bluetooth, a six-speaker stereo, satellite radio, Siri Eyes Free, push-button start, proximity keyless entry, and a rearview camera.

Available upgrades include navigation, a Bose sound system with seven speakers, HD Radio, a 120-volt household-style power outlet, dual-zone automatic climate control, remote start, and a moonroof. Optional safety features include blind spot monitoring, rear cross traffic alert, forward collision warning, front and rear parking sensors, and lane departure warning.

The IntelliLink infotainment system is easy to use. Unlike many rivals, the Encore comes standard with Apple CarPlay and Android Auto, which allow you to display your smartphone on the infotainment screen.

  • "The previous jumbled array of buttons has mostly been replaced by Buick's large, user-friendly touchscreen interface." -- Autotrader
  • "The infotainment system is easy to learn, and combined with OnStar, provides a robust set of features. Android Auto and Apple CarPlay are standard, as is Wi-Fi hotspot connectivity. Only the Premium trim gets a full suite of active safety features, but some are available on the lower trim levels." -- Edmunds (2019)
  • "The new Buick Intellilink infotainment system … is among the most intuitive in the industry, and it really allowed Buick's designer's (sic) to reduce clutter in the cabin by eliminating all of the old infotainment system's buttons. With its new iPad-like minimalistic design, the Encore's cabin is quite a nice place to be." -- Motor Trend (2017)

Cargo

With 18.8 cubic feet of space behind the rear seats and 48.4 cubic feet with them folded, the Encore has a decent amount of space for a subcompact SUV. The front passenger seat folds flat for a little extra space for long items.

  • We recommend it, but it merely brings the Encore closer to par rather than what we'd consider ideal -- especially when the car is loaded with people and luggage. Speaking of which, the Encore may not have sufficient room for your needs. Like most of its competitors, the back seat is tight and the cargo area is small. " -- Autotrader
  • [The Encore has] … more than enough for a moderate load of groceries, but most compact crossovers do better." -- Edmunds
  • "Those who need rear-seat and cargo space might be better off with a larger SUV like the Honda CR-V or Buick Envision." -- Kelley Blue Book (2017)
