2019 Buick Encore Interior Review

Interior: 7.2

The 2019 Buick Encore holds its own against class rivals in terms of interior quality. The cabin is well-insulated and quiet, and upscale plastics and soft-touch materials are scattered throughout. However, numerous buttons on the dashboard give this Buick’s styling a dated look.

There is good visibility from the front seats, and the rear seats are spacious enough for two adults to sit comfortably. The user-friendly infotainment system is the highlight of the tech features, and the Encore’s cargo capacity is respectable for a subcompact SUV.

  • "Build and materials quality are on par with that of other vehicles in the class, but the Encore's cabin does look dated because of its many dashboard buttons." -- Edmunds
  • "To keep the Encore's cabin in line with Buick's high standards, the company employs Active Noise Cancellation technology combined with ample insulation and Quiet Tuning engineering. By using the car's speakers, Active Noise Cancellation sends out noise-canceling sound waves that help hush wind, road and engine noise." -- Kelley Blue Book (2017)
  • "Despite its diminutive dimensions, the little Buick is far from a penalty box inside, offering upscale plastics and plenty of soft-touch materials." -- Left Lane News (2017)

The Buick Encore seats five people on standard cloth upholstery. A flat-folding front passenger seat, a storage space beneath that same seat, a six-way power-adjustable driver's seat, and a tilt-and-telescopic leather-wrapped steering wheel are standard. Leather upholstery, heated front seats, a six-way power-adjustable front passenger seat, driver's seat memory settings, and a heated steering wheel are available.

The Encore’s front seats are comfortable, and outward visibility for the driver is good. The rear seats have ample room for two adults, but as with many subcompacts SUVs, they feel cramped with three people. Headroom is adequate for most occupants.

The Encore has two complete sets of LATCH child-seat connectors in the second-row outboard seats. There's not enough room for rear-facing child seats unless you move up the front seats, leaving less space for front passengers.

  • "Though it's small, the Encore has plenty of space for front passengers. Adults will fit in the rear without too much trouble." -- Edmunds
  • "... up to four passengers will have decent amounts of space in any seat. Don't expect to fit three across on the rear bench comfortably, though, as the Encore is surprisingly narrow despite what its proportions might suggest." -- New York Daily News (2017)
  • "Whether rendered in cloth and Leatherette or available leather, the cabin offers room for five with a 60/40-split rear bench that accommodates two average-sized adults plus a kid in the center spot." -- Kelley Blue Book (2016)

Interior Features

The Encore comes standard with proximity keyless entry, push-button start, Bluetooth, a 4G LTE Wi-Fi hot spot, satellite radio, a six-speaker stereo, two USB ports, a rearview camera, OnStar and Buick Connected Services, and the Buick IntelliLink infotainment system with an 8-inch touch screen and Apple CarPlay and Android Auto connectivity.

Available features include remote start, a moonroof, blind spot monitoring, rear cross traffic alert, dual-zone automatic climate control, a seven-speaker Bose sound system, HD Radio, an auto-dimming rearview mirror, navigation, forward collision warning, front and rear parking sensors, and lane departure warning.

While Apple CarPlay and Android Auto are increasingly common features, it’s still notable to see them come standard in the Encore, as they’re optional in many rivals. The IntelliLink infotainment system is easy to use and takes little time to master. Most of the driver assistance features are only offered in the top-of-the-line Essence trim.

  • "The infotainment system is easy to learn, and combined with OnStar, provides a robust set of features. Android Auto and Apple CarPlay are standard, as is Wi-Fi hotspot connectivity. Only the Premium trim gets a full suite of active safety features, but some are available on the lower trim levels." -- Edmunds
  • "The new Buick Intellilink infotainment system (which is identical to GMC's Intellilink and Chevy's MyLink) is among the most intuitive in the industry, and it really allowed Buick's designer's (sic) to reduce clutter in the cabin by eliminating all of the old infotainment system's buttons. With its new iPad-like minimalistic design, the Encore's cabin is quite a nice place to be." -- Motor Trend (2017)
  • "The interior of Buick's compact Encore SUV shows significant thought went into both its design and detail." -- Kelley Blue Book (2017)

The Encore has 18.8 cubic feet of cargo space with the rear seats in use and 48.4 cubic feet with them folded. Those figures are about average for a subcompact SUV. In addition to split-folding rear seats, the Encore’s front passenger seat also folds flat, giving you an extra bit of cargo flexibility.

  • "[The Encore has] … more than enough for a moderate load of groceries, but most compact crossovers do better." -- Edmunds
  • "Those who need rear-seat and cargo space might be better off with a larger SUV like the Honda CR-V or Buick Envision." -- Kelley Blue Book (2017)
  • "The Encore could also use some extra room in back. Currently, the crossover has a tight back seat and a fairly small cargo area – a function of its small size. Once again, we think that many shoppers won't mind, as some – especially those who rarely carry passengers or lots of equipment – will flock to the Encore specifically because of its size." -- Autotrader (2015)
