2018 Buick Encore Interior Review

Scorecard

Interior: 7.8

The 2018 Buick Encore has a quiet, well-appointed cabin and measures up well against its class rivals in terms of quality. However, the Buick’s styling looks antiquated because of the many buttons on the dashboard.

The Encore’s front seats provide good visibility, and the rear seats are spacious enough for two adults. The user-friendly infotainment system is the highlight of the tech features, and the Encore’s cargo capacity is respectable for a subcompact SUV.

  • "Build and materials quality are on par with that of other vehicles in the class, but the Encore's cabin does look dated because of its numerous dashboard buttons." -- Edmunds
  • "To keep the Encore's cabin in line with Buick's high standards, the company employs Active Noise Cancellation technology combined with ample insulation and Quiet Tuning engineering. By using the car's speakers, Active Noise Cancellation sends out noise-canceling sound waves that help hush wind, road and engine noise." -- Kelley Blue Book (2017)
  • "Despite its diminutive dimensions, the little Buick is far from a penalty box inside, offering upscale plastics and plenty of soft-touch materials." -- Left Lane News (2017)

Seating

The Buick Encore seats five people. Cloth upholstery, storage under the front passenger seat, a six-way power-adjustable driver's seat, and a tilt-and-telescopic leather-wrapped steering wheel come standard. Leather upholstery, heated front seats, a six-way power-adjustable front passenger seat, driver's seat memory settings, and a heated steering wheel are available.

The Encore’s front seats provide good visibility and are quite comfortable. The rear seats have ample room for two adults but feel pretty cramped with three people – though that’s not unusual for a subcompact SUV. Headroom is adequate for most occupants.

The Encore has LATCH child-seat systems in the second-row outboard seats. The bottom anchors are deeply set in the seat cushions and are difficult to get to, but the top tether anchors are easy to access. There's not enough room for rear-facing child seats unless the front seats are moved up, leaving less space for front passengers.

  • "The 2017 Buick Encore features comfortable front seats and a high seating position that offers a commanding view of the road. In back, the seats offer enough head- and legroom for 6-footers but there's no denying that it's a tight fit for both adults and rear-facing child seats." -- Edmunds (2017)
  • "... up to four passengers will have decent amounts of space in any seat. Don't expect to fit three across on the rear bench comfortably, though, as the Encore is surprisingly narrow despite what its proportions might suggest." -- New York Daily News (2017)
  • "Whether rendered in cloth and Leatherette or available leather, the cabin offers room for five with a 60/40-split rear bench that accommodates two average-sized adults plus a kid in the center spot." -- Kelley Blue Book (2016)

Interior Features

The Encore comes standard with satellite radio, a Wi-Fi hot spot, a six-speaker audio system, a 4.2-inch driver information dashboard display, a rearview camera, the Buick IntelliLink infotainment system with an 8-inch touch screen, Siri Eyes Free, Android Auto, Apple CarPlay, two USB ports, Bluetooth, and the OnStar Guidance Plan, which includes automatic crash response, stolen vehicle assistance, and roadside assistance.

Available features include remote start, a moonroof, rear cross traffic alert, blind spot monitoring, a seven-speaker sound system, an auto-dimming rearview mirror, forward collision alert, parking assist, and lane departure warning.

Android Auto and Apple CarPlay are increasingly common features, but it’s still nice to see them come standard in the Encore, as they’re optional in some rivals. The IntelliLink infotainment system is easy to use and takes little time to master. Most of the driver assistance features are only offered in the highest trim.

  • "The infotainment system is easy to learn, and combined with OnStar, provides a robust set of features." -- Edmunds
  • "The new Buick Intellilink infotainment system (which is identical to GMC's Intellilink and Chevy's MyLink) is among the most intuitive in the industry, and it really allowed Buick's designer's (sic) to reduce clutter in the cabin by eliminating all of the old infotainment system's buttons. With its new iPad-like minimalistic design, the Encore's cabin is quite a nice place to be." -- Motor Trend (2017)
  • "The interior of Buick's compact Encore SUV shows significant thought went into both its design and detail. An 8-inch color touch screen moves from atop the dash to the center stack, while the larger gauge cluster includes a 4.2-inch driver-information screen." -- Kelley Blue Book (2017)

Cargo

The Encore has 18.8 cubic feet of cargo space with the rear seats in use and 48.4 cubic feet with them folded. Those are OK totals for a subcompact SUV. In addition to split-folding rear seats, the Encore’s front passenger seat also folds flat, giving you an extra bit of cargo flexibility.

  • "Those who need rear-seat and cargo space might be better off with a larger SUV like the Honda CR-V or Buick Envision." -- Kelley Blue Book (2017)
  • "The interior also comes up short in the cargo-carrying department, with 18.8 cubic feet of space behind the rear seats and 48.4 cubic feet with the seatbacks folded down. Those numbers are similar to subcompact SUV competitors. … The Encore's standard fold-flat front passenger seat at least gives the interior added flexibility." -- Edmunds (2016)
  • "The Encore could also use some extra room in back. Currently, the crossover has a tight back seat and a fairly small cargo area – a function of its small size. Once again, we think that many shoppers won't mind, as some – especially those who rarely carry passengers or lots of equipment – will flock to the Encore specifically because of its size." -- Autotrader (2015)
