Scorecard

Interior: 7.7

According to critics, the 2016 Buick Encore has a luxurious interior, with top-notch materials and style seen in more expensive cars. They like the Encore's fit and finish and mention that the wood and metal trim looks high-quality. Also, the Encore's cabin is comfortable and quiet.

  • "Its stylish cabin is feature rich, quiet, and comfortable for four." -- Car and Driver
  • "As for the surroundings, the Encore's passenger cabin can have a high-end atmosphere accented by soft-touch materials and handsome simulated wood and metal trim (we say 'can' because certain trim levels and color schemes look much better than others)." -- Edmunds
  • "Despite its diminutive dimensions, the little Buick is far from a penalty box inside, offering upscale plastics and plenty of soft-touch materials." -- Left Lane News
  • "Climbing inside the Encore, you're immediately struck by the handsome cabin and high-quality materials. It's particularly impressive considering the Encore's reasonable pricing that starts below $26,000 with destination." -- AutoTrader (2015)
  • "The interior of the 2015 Buick Encore SUV shows significant thought went into both its design and detail, with the same upscale ambiance found in Buick's larger sedans and SUVs." -- Kelley Blue Book (2015)

Seating

The Buick Encore has seating for five and comes standard with cloth upholstery and a six-way power-adjustable driver's seat. Available features include a power-adjustable front passenger seat, heated front seats, leather upholstery and a heated steering wheel.

The Encore has a good view of the road, and the front seats are very spacious. Reviewer opinion on the rear seats is split, as some critics find there to be adequate space for two adults, but others find the rear quarters cramped. The 2016 Encore's cabin is quiet at speed.

  • The 2016 Buick Encore features comfortable front seats and a high seating position that offers a commanding view of the road. In back, the seats offer enough head- and legroom for 6-footers but there's no denying that it's a tight fit for both adults and rear-facing child seats." -- Edmunds
  • "Though it isn't nearly as spacious as most mainstream ‘compact’ crossovers that play in the same price bracket, the Encore feels larger than it is thanks to clever packaging and oversized front windows. It offers plenty of head- and leg-room for four adults, though the middle rear seat is best left to children." -- Left Lane News
  • "We also appreciate the Encore's commanding driving position, especially considering its compact-car roots." -- AutoTrader (2015)
  • "Substantial soundproofing pays off, as the Encore's cabin seems to ignore noise generated by the big wheel/tire combo, as well as the wind rushing over its sleek skin." -- Kelley Blue Book (2015)

Interior Features

Standard features in the 2016 Encore include Buick's IntelliLink infotainment system with a 7-inch color display, a six-speaker audio system, a rearview camera, satellite radio, a USB port, Bluetooth and OnStar with 4G LTE and a Wi-Fi hot spot (subscription required). Available features include a seven-speaker Bose audio system, a sunroof, remote start, navigation, dual-zone automatic climate control, rear cross traffic alert, blind spot monitoring, lane departure warning and forward collision warning.

The Encore's infotainment screen is prominent and intuitive, but it can have slow response times. Controls are well-placed and standard features are plentiful, but some features you would expect to find in a subcompact SUV, such as keyless start, are not even available as options.

  • Aside from a smattering of similar-looking buttons, controls are fairly intuitive and easy to access. A high point is the large 7-inch center touchscreen for the IntelliLink infotainment system. The system is also fairly easy to use, though it can occasionally be slow to respond (and unlike other GM models, it was not updated for 2016 to address that shortcoming)." -- Edmunds
  • Three different trim packages -- Convenience, Leather and Premium -- add comfort and convenience items to the mix, including sophisticate[d] technology like a navigation system and lane-departure alert, although keyless ignition and a power liftgate are notably absent." -- Automobile Magazine (2013)
  • "The standard equipment list is impressive." -- Motor Trend (2013)

Cargo

The 2016 Encore can fit 18.8 cubic feet of cargo behind the rear seats and 48.4 cubic feet with the back seats folded. The Encore's cargo capacity trails that of most compact crossover rivals but is about average compared to other subcompact SUVs. The cargo area is small but has a big opening, which makes it easy to load. There is plenty of storage space for smaller items throughout the cabin.

  • The interior also comes up short in the cargo-carrying department, with 18.8 cubic feet of space behind the rear seats and 48.4 cubic feet with the seatbacks folded down. Those numbers are similar to subcompact SUV competitors, but fall far short of more popular compact crossovers like the Ford Escape and Honda CR-V. The Encore's standard fold-flat front passenger seat at least gives the interior added flexibility." -- Edmunds
  • The Encore could also use some extra room in back. Currently, the crossover has a tight back seat and a fairly small cargo area -- a function of its small size. Once again, we think that many shoppers won't mind, as some -- especially those who rarely carry passengers or lots of equipment -- will flock to the Encore specifically because of its size." -- AutoTrader (2015)
  • "A large hatch provides easy access to its 18.8-cubic-foot cargo bay." -- Kelley Blue Book (2015)
  • "Numerous storage bins in the dash, doors, floor, and cargo area hold everything from pencils and spare change to water bottles and purses." -- Motor Trend (2013)
