2014 Buick Encore Overview

Is the 2014 Buick Encore a Good Used SUV?

The Buick Encore comes loaded with standard features in its high-quality cabin, but it doesn’t have much cargo space. Its engine, while underpowered, earns excellent fuel economy estimates.

The 2014 Buick Encore has a turbocharged 138-horsepower four-cylinder engine that produces disappointing acceleration, particularly on the highway. Fuel economy, however, is excellent for a 2014 subcompact SUV: 25 mpg in the city and 33 mpg on the highway. The Encore has a small turning radius, a smooth ride, and composed handling.

The Encore seats five on comfortable seats that have plenty of head- and legroom in the front and the back. The cabin remains quiet when traveling and features plenty of soft-touch materials. However, a small back window and thick roof pillars hinder rearward visibility. The 2014 Encore has a maximum cargo space of 48.4 cubic feet, which is smaller than most rivals.

The Encore comes with a lengthy list of standard features, including a rearview camera, Bluetooth, and Buick's quick and easy-to-use IntelliLink infotainment system with a 7-inch display. Available features include a sunroof.

How Reliable Is the 2014 Buick Encore?

J.D. Power and Associates gave the 2014 Encore a reliability rating of four out of five. That's considered above average across all vehicles, and it’s a better rating than most competing subcompact SUVs received.

How Safe Is the Encore?

The 2014 Buick Encore has an average safety rating compared to rivals. The Insurance Institute for Highway Safety (IIHS) conducted five crash tests on the 2014 Encore. The Encore received a score of Good – the highest available – in all but the small overlap front test, in which it earned the lowest rating of Poor. In National Highway Traffic Safety Administration (NHTSA) crash tests, the Buick Encore received four out of five stars in the overall and rollover tests and five stars in the frontal and side tests.

The Encore comes standard with a rearview camera, which is typical for a 2014 subcompact SUV. Blind spot monitoring, rear cross traffic alert, forward collision warning, and lane departure warning are available.

Should I Consider Another Used Encore?

Buick launched the Encore with the 2013 model. Buying a 2013 model (starting at $10,800) will get you the same features as the 2014 – for less money.

Which Used Buick Encore Is Right for Me?

The 2014 Encore has four trim levels: Encore (1SB), Encore Convenience (1SD), Encore Leather (1SL), and Encore Premium (1SN). Front-wheel drive is standard, and all-wheel drive is available in every trim level. The base Encore 1SB should more than satisfy most shoppers, as it comes with lots of standard features for the class, including a rearview camera, Buick’s 7-inch infotainment system, Bluetooth, satellite radio, and a USB port.

If you would like more luxury and driver assistance features, the Encore 1SD adds rear cross traffic alert, blind spot monitoring, remote start, dual-zone automatic climate control, and fog lamps. The Encore 1SL includes leather seating, a heated steering wheel, a power-adjustable front passenger seat, and heated front seats. For more safety features, go with the top-of-the-line Encore 1SN, which adds rain-sensing wipers, an upgraded Bose stereo, front and rear parking sensors, forward collision alert, and lane departure warning.

You might also consider a certified pre-owned Encore. With Buick’s CPO program, there is a one-year/12,000-mile limited warranty, and the original new-car powertrain warranty is extended to seven years or 100,000 miles. Buick CPO models must pass a 172-point inspection. Additional benefits like towing and roadside assistance may be available, so read Buick’s warranty page carefully.

2014 Buick Encore and Other SUVs to Consider

Which Is Better: 2014 Buick Encore or 2014 Honda CR-V?

The Honda CR-V – winner of our 2014 Best Compact SUV for the Money award – offers roomy front and back seats, as well as more cargo space than the Encore. With its base engine, the CR-V gets 47 more horsepower than the Buick Encore and delivers decent acceleration for everyday driving. Additionally, the CR-V has a comfortable ride. The CR-V is the better of these two SUVs.

Which Is Better: 2014 Buick Encore or 2014 Buick Enclave?

The Buick Encore is one of the smaller subcompact SUVs on the market. If you need more seating and cargo space, consider its larger sibling, the Buick Enclave. The Enclave has three rows; the first two are roomy, but the third is best left to children. The Enclave has more than double the Encore's cargo space, and its 288-horsepower V6 engine will move you quickly on the highway (where the Encore struggles). Additionally, the Enclave won our 2014 Best 3-Row SUV for Families award.

Which Is Better: 2014 Buick Encore or 2014 Ford Escape?

Go for the Ford Escape if you want engaging driving dynamics and engine options. Though its ride is a bit firm, the Escape has sharper handling than most competing SUVs, including the Encore. The Ford Escape has three engine options, all stronger than the Encore's sole engine. The Escape also has a roomier back seat and more cargo space than the Encore. On the other hand, its infotainment system is confusing and it has a low reliability rating.
