2020 Buick Encore GX Interior

2020 Buick Encore GX Interior Review

Interior: 7.3

The all-new 2020 Buick Encore GX has a quiet, well-designed cabin. This Buick doesn't feel as upscale as some of its classmates, however, because there are lots of hard plastics interspersed with the soft-touch materials.

The seats are reasonably comfortable and spacious, and the cargo hold is decently sized. There are plenty of standard and available features, but the infotainment system could be more user-friendly.

  • "While the materials used in the front seating area are of the high-quality soft-touch variety, those used in back are a touch hard and plasticky." -- Kelley Blue Book
  • "It's not a luxurious interior – even the midrange Select trim we purchased doesn't come with full leather seats or a power passenger seat – but it gets the job done. It's a vast improvement over the Encore, which feels cluttered inside." -- Consumer Reports
  • "The cabin experience is a bit of a mixed bag, though, with high-quality materials in the front and lower-quality cheap plastic in the rear. That's not to say the higher trim levels aren't attractive – the Essence trim features leather-covered seats and a leather-wrapped steering wheel." -- Autotrader

The Encore GX seats five people in two rows and comes standard with cloth and synthetic leather upholstery and two full sets of LATCH connectors for installing child safety seats. Leather upholstery, power-adjustable front seats, heated front seats, and a heated steering wheel are available.

Most people will enjoy the Encore GX's seats. Both rows provide enough head- and legroom for adult passengers to ride without feeling cramped. The seats are comfortable, though they could be a tad wider and more supportive. Forward visibility is good, but large roof pillars impede visibility in other directions.

  • "Inside, the Encore GX has ample room for full-grown humans, with plenty of headroom even with the available sunroof." -- Autotrader
  • "The most notable aspect of the Encore GX's interior is its sense of space. Our test Encore GX did not come equipped with the optional sunroof, but even then our 6-foot-4 driver sat several inches below the roofline. Headroom in the back is almost as roomy. There's good legroom all around as well – two 6-foot-plus passengers won't have a problem sitting in tandem." -- Edmunds
  • "There's enough room inside the new 2020 Buick Encore GX for a 5-foot-10-inch person to sit comfortably behind a driver of the same height. Headroom is in good supply, even with the available large sunroof." -- Kelley Blue Book

Interior Features

Standard features in the Encore GX include push-button start and the Buick Infotainment system, which comes with an 8-inch touch screen, six speakers, Bluetooth, four USB ports, a Wi-Fi hot spot, Apple CarPlay, and Android Auto.

Available features include a panoramic moonroof, dual-zone automatic climate control, remote start, navigation, a seven-speaker Bose audio system, satellite radio, HD Radio, and wireless device charging.

The center-stack controls are well-organized and easy to reach. The infotainment system comes with a lot of nice features, but there are some quirks that you might find irritating. There's some lag in the touch screen's response times, and you have to do a fair bit of navigating to view certain features and menus. The system as a whole can be a bit distracting, and some functions crash unexpectedly.

Standard driver assistance features include a rearview camera, forward collision warning, automatic emergency braking, front pedestrian braking, lane keep assist, lane departure warning, and Teen Driver, which lets you set speed and audio volume limits for secondary drivers.

Available active safety features include a head-up display, adaptive cruise control, blind spot monitoring, lane change alert, a rear camera mirror, rear cross traffic alert, rear parking sensors, a surround-view parking camera system, and parallel and perpendicular parking assist.

  • "A small list of initial annoyances include the hard-to-find start button, the several screens you have to scroll through in the instrument cluster to view the fuel range, and how easy it is to accidentally turn the climate fan off when trying to turn it down. Drivers will quickly learn the nuances of those controls and displays, but those who tend to manually adjust the automatic climate control might be distracted by the climate menu that pops up in the infotainment screen, partially blocking what's being displayed there every time an adjustment is made. They will also notice the lag when interacting with the touchscreen." -- Consumer Reports
  • "Controls for the climate system and various safety systems are intuitively laid out." -- Edmunds

The Encore GX provides 23.5 cubic feet of cargo space behind the rear seats and 50.2 cubic feet with the rear seats folded down. That's more than most other subcompact SUVs provide. The passenger seat folds flat to provide some additional space to haul large items. There's also a decent amount of small-item storage in the cabin. A hands-free power liftgate is available.

  • "The Encore GX's liftgate is easy to open. Our GX came with the optional powered hands-free liftgate that opens with a kick motion under the left side of the rear bumper as long as the keyfob is nearby. But the kick motion has to be exact and off-center. The cargo area is flat and can carry a decent amount of stuff. The cargo floor, which is covered with thin but soft carpet, can be lowered, which helps accommodate tall items. There is a bin on one side of the floor that can hold a gallon container or large laundry detergent bottle. The bin's plastic side can also be removed to help accommodate larger items. The rear 60/40-split seatbacks fold to expand cargo capacity. In addition, the front passenger seatback can fold forward making additional room for a long item. A one-piece security cover helps to keep items hidden with the rear seats in the upright position." -- Consumer Reports
  • "Cargo space is relatively roomy, and the rear seats fold completely flat. And even if the front seat is pushed back for a tall driver, the rear seats will lower without needing to move the front seat up." -- Edmunds
  • "The Encore GX's back seat splits 60/40 and folds for improved cargo utility, which is enhanced further by a front passenger seat that folds flat to help this compact Buick SUV carry long items. An 8-foot board, for example, can be carried diagonally in the Encore GX. Behind the rear seat, and there's 25.3 cubic feet of cargo room, almost as much as the 26.9 available in the Envision, the Encore GX's larger sibling." -- Kelley Blue Book
