2018 Buick Enclave Interior Review

Scorecard

Interior: 8.7

The 2018 Buick Enclave's cabin is decidedly upscale. Most touch points are covered in soft materials, and the styling looks high end. Still, there are a few low-rent plastic trim pieces to be found. The seats in all three rows have plenty of room for adults, and the cabin is very quiet. The infotainment system is easy to use. Few rivals have as much cargo space as the Enclave.

  • "Looking around the cabin, we saw a lot of gentle curves and thoughtful accents that made the inside of the Enclave feel downright premium. It was a fresh and airy sense of taste though, and definitely not the seasoned wood-and-whiskey stodginess one might expect from the Buick name." -- Autoblog
  • The Enclave's new standard eight-inch infotainment screen is as good as anything GM has, and the Avenir's padded pleather dash looks and feels richer than it is. Even the plastic woodgrain trim is fairly convincing, but there's still cheap, hard plastic along the lower inner doors and in the third row between c- and d-pillars." -- Automobile Magazine
  • "Like the exterior, the interior features clean, flowing shapes and a layered look to the dash that incorporates a padded surface set off by chrome and wood accents." -- Kelley Blue Book

Seating

The Enclave has seats for seven in three rows. The base model has cloth upholstery, power-adjustable front seats, and heated front seats. Higher trims add leather upholstery, ventilated front seats, heated second-row seats, and a heated steering wheel.

The redesigned 2018 Enclave has a very spacious cabin, regardless of where you sit. There is ample shoulder room for those up front, and the second-row captain's chairs slide forward and back. Even the third row is adult-friendly. Getting into the way back is easy thanks to the gap between the second-row seats, as well as the available passenger-side SmartSlide seat. It can slide forward even when a child-safety seat is installed using the LATCH connectors. The cabin is very quiet, so it's easy to have a conversation with someone sitting in another row.

  • "The comfortable front bucket seats are separated by a large center console with a huge storage bin." -- Kelley Blue Book
  • "The second row is equally comfortable and the third row – a space notoriously uncomfortable in most SUVs – is suitable for adults and not just kids. It's still best to put the largest adults in the second row, but the third row is genuinely accessible and comfortable for most adult passengers. The optional passenger side SmartSlide seat improves third-row access by easily pitching forward to provide wider entry even with an empty car seat installed." -- Boston Globe
  • "It was just as easy to speak with occupants in the rear of the vehicle as it was in the front. No shouting required. New sound-deadening materials and noise-cancellation improvements encouraged chatting because the new Enclave is cemetery quiet but without the creepy goosebumps vibe." -- New York Daily News

Interior Features

The 2018 Enclave comes standard with tri-zone automatic climate control, a six-speaker audio system, satellite radio, an 8-inch touch-screen infotainment system, Android Auto and Apple CarPlay smartphone integration, Bluetooth, an OnStar 4G LTE Wi-Fi hot spot, remote start, a rearview camera, and rear parking sensors.

Optional features include a dual-pane moonroof, navigation, wireless smartphone charging, a 10-speaker Bose audio system, HD Radio, adaptive cruise control, a Safety Alert seat (which vibrates the driver's seat when other safety systems are activated), forward collision warning, automatic emergency braking, pedestrian detection, active lane keep assist, lane departure warning, blind spot monitoring, rear cross traffic alert, a rear camera mirror, and front parking sensors.

The Enclave's infotainment system is user-friendly, responds quickly, and includes advanced smartphone integration. Still, a few critics think the system isn't quite as state-of-the-art as the infotainment systems offered in some other GM-branded models. The standard 4G LTE Wi-Fi hot spot provides internet service to multiple devices nearly everywhere you may travel.

  • "The Enclave's new standard eight-inch infotainment screen is as good as anything GM has." -- Automobile Magazine
  • Sadly, the Enclave still runs the current version of Buick's IntelliLink infotainment system. While it's snappy enough and it offers both Apple CarPlay and Android Auto, I was hoping it would be the vastly improved infotainment system found in Cadillac's recently updated models (CTS, CT6) and the 2018 GMC Terrain. Alas, no. Perhaps it'll be ready for the mid-cycle refresh in a few years' time or slipped in as a running change." -- CNET
  • "The Enclave is also a connected vehicle. In addition to OnStar, Apple CarPlay and Android Auto, it offers 4G LTE Wi-Fi running on AT&T's cellular service. In all but the most remote parts of our trip through the Blue Ridge Mountains, it worked quite well with a number of people using it simultaneously." -- Autoblog

Cargo

The Enclave offers more cargo room than most midsize SUVs with three rows. There's 23.6 cubic feet of space behind the third row, 58 cubic feet with the third row folded, and 97.6 cubic feet with both the second and third rows folded. It's easy to load up the Enclave's cargo space when you have an armful of luggage, as the hands-free power liftgate opens up with a simple wave of your foot under the rear bumper. The cabin has numerous small-item storage spaces for your personal effects.

  • "Loading cargo is made easier thanks to a standard hands-free power lift gate. Hands-free is great, except for those moments when it's difficult to actually find the sensor that makes it work. Buick takes care of that problem by projecting its logo on the ground right below the sensor, so it's quick and easy to locate." -- Boston Globe
  • "There's a good amount of room for stuff, too. The floor of the rear cargo area lifts up to reveal a deep well with hooks to keep your groceries in place." -- Autoblog
  • "Storage slots are everywhere. Even the glovebox is large enough to hold a light jacket or two." -- New York Daily News
