2017 Buick Enclave Interior Review

Note: This interior review was created when the 2017 Buick Enclave was new.

Scorecard

Interior: 8.3

The interior is where the 2017 Buick Enclave really shines. Buick includes leather and mahogany as standard garnish and offers many niceties expected in a more expensive luxury-grade SUV. The Enclave's price paired with a sizable list of included features make this 3-row SUV a good value.

  • "Step into the 2017 Buick Enclave 3-row SUV and you'll see a handsome front panel with stylized instrument faces and clean integration of the IntelliLink touch-screen display." -- Kelley Blue Book
  • "The interior of a Buick Enclave isn't quite as rich as those found in some premium competitors, but most surfaces are still attractive and of good quality." -- Edmunds (2016)
  • "While the Acadia takes on a more truck-like personality, the Traverse is a well-rounded everyday runner, and the Enclave is the most upscale member of the family. It isn't quite at the caliber of a Lexus or a Mercedes, but for the price, it might present the best near-luxury value among 3-row vehicles." -- Autotrader (2015)

Seating

In its standard configuration, the 2017 Enclave includes two captain's chairs in the second row and a bench seat with a 60/40 split in the third row. Seating capacity increases from seven to eight by opting for a bench seat in the second row. Power adjustments for the front passenger and driver's seats are standard, as is a leather-trimmed steering wheel. Available features include leather upholstery and heated and cooled front seats. For child safety seats, there are three sets of tether anchors (all easy to find and use), and two sets of lower anchors (which are easy to attach, but you may have to dig a little to locate the hardware).

Seating is comfortable and spacious, according to test drivers. Unlike many SUVs with 3 rows, the Enclave is roomy enough to transport taller passengers in every row, thanks to second-row seats that slide forward for easier access and extra legroom in the third row.

  • "Enclave's second-row - which can be configured with bucket seats or a bench seat - feature GM's Smart Slide system, a popular feature that allows easy entry to the third row with the pull of one handle. With Smart Slide, the second-row seat cushion flips up while the seatback slides forward, compressing the space occupied by the seat. The seats also have fore/aft adjustment - when scooted rearward, the second-row seat provides more legroom for taller passengers, while adjusting it forward results in more storage space or additional legroom for third-row passengers." -- Left Lane News
  • "Buick's Enclave SUV for 2017 not only seats up to eight passengers, its brilliantly engineered 2nd-row seats can flip and fold with one-handed operation. The seats also slide forward to create easy access to the third row. Folding both rows creates a cavernous cargo hold." -- Kelley Blue Book
  • "In terms of versatility, the Enclave is one of the most spacious crossovers available for both people and cargo. Front-row passengers will enjoy abundant head- and legroom, as will most second-row occupants. But those middle-row seat cushions are mounted a bit low, which impacts comfort for adults. Sliding the second-row seats all the way back helps alleviate this issue, but doing so effectively kills third-row legroom. The third row is actually roomy enough for adults to fit in comfortably (as long as second-row occupants are kind enough not to slide their seats all the way back), though it's best for those of smaller stature or children. This is especially true if you want to fit three across. Rearward visibility is almost nonexistent when you have a full crew aboard." -- Edmunds (2016)

Interior Features

Standard features in the 2017 Enclave include tri-zone automatic climate control, a rearview camera, remote vehicle start, a power liftgate, a 6.5-inch touch screen, satellite radio, a USB port, Bluetooth, and smartphone integration. Available features include power-folding mirrors, navigation, a premium Bose sound system with 10 speakers, blind spot monitoring, rear cross traffic alert, lane departure alert, and forward collision alert.

The Enclave's interior feels upscale and clean, with high-end materials, easy-to-read gauges, and redundant controls that are well within the driver's reach. Like many infotainment interfaces, there is a bit of a learning curve with Buick's IntelliLink system, according to critics who add that the touch screen is not as responsive as those in some rivals.

  • "The display blends hard buttons and touch-based controls, the latter of which can be finicky to use." -- Kelley Blue Book
  • "The climate controls are operated by three easy-to-use knobs, though the buttons interspersed with them are very small. Every Enclave features Buick's IntelliLink 6.5-inch touchscreen infotainment system, which provides smartphone integration for Internet radio and other apps. It features a clean layout and an intuitive menu structure, though learning one's way around the system can take a while. The screen itself is mounted low in the driver's sight line and requires a longer glance away from the road than we'd like. In addition, the system is sometimes slow to respond to touch inputs (and occasionally misses them entirely), making the interface a bit frustrating." -- Edmunds (2016)
  • "Enclave's interior is nicely assembled and uses high-quality materials. Chrome and wood-finish accents help convey an upscale vibe, as does the available leather upholstery and contrast stitch detailing." -- Consumer Guide (2014)

Cargo

The 2017 Enclave has one of the largest cargo capacities among midsize SUVs with three rows. Behind the seats is 23.3 cubic feet of space. This increases to 68.9 cubic feet with the third row folded flat and 115.2 cubic feet with both rear seats down. Standard sliding second-row seats and a power liftgate make for easy loading.

  • "Make no mistake - the Enclave is a seriously large machine. There's ample room for passengers in all three rows to sit in comfort - even way back - and a full 23 cubic feet of cargo space is available with all seats in place. Fold all but the front seats down, and that figure increases to a class-leading 115 cubes." -- Left Lane News
  • "When it comes to cargo space, the Enclave is definitely a leader in its class. Even with the third-row seats in place, it can carry more luggage than most rivals. Space is abundant when lowering either the second or third row, as the Enclave offers more cargo space than any crossover apart from its Chevrolet and GMC siblings." -- Edmunds (2016)
  • "Cargo volume is largest among premium-midsize SUVs, and rivals that of many large SUVs. Usable space behind a raised 3rd-row seat is more generous than most midsize SUVs, plus there is an underfloor compartment as well. The 2nd- and 3rd-row seats fold easily to form a flat, nearly-level load floor. We like the standard power liftgate too. Interior small-item storage is good and includes several bins and cubbies." -- Consumer Guide (2014)
