2008 BMW Z4 Interior Review

Note: This interior review was created when the 2008 BMW Z4 was new.

Interior: 6.8

The 2008 BMW Z4 coupe's two-seat interior, identical to that of the Z4 roadster, is viewed as both handsome and functional. The coupe's extra cargo space (as compared to the convertible) is a plus.

"Simplicity is the prevailing aesthetic within the 2007 BMW Z4's cabin," says Edmunds. "This is a driver's car, and as such, the cockpit's furnishings offer little to shift your focus from the road. The cabin offers a broad dash, pleasant gauges, firm sport seats and not much else. There's lots of standard metallic trim, though, and wood trim is available for those seeking a more opulent look."

Reviews are mixed on the cabin's seating and comfort. Most feel the Z4's seats provide good support for sporty driving, even if the cockpit is a bit snug. "Cabins are cozy (claustrophobics need not apply), but with adult-size head and leg room," observes Consumer Guide. A reviewer for the Los Angeles Times finds headroom a bit lacking, commenting, "Even though the top has slight bubble shapes incorporated into the profile, the headroom is pretty tight for me, at 6 foot 1, and the cabin generally is fairly restrictive." Still, Car and Driver finds headroom "adequate for six-footers, but the narrow side-window glass may induce cold sweats in claustrophobics."

As for the seats themselves, Kelley Blue Book says they provide "good lateral support, yet are wide enough to accommodate most drivers." Consumer Guide, on the other hand, says the seats "may be too snug for some and seem shy on padding." The optional M-style sport seats -- one of Kelley Blue Book "favorite features" -- provide extra lateral support.

Getting in and out of the petite Z4 is a challenge. Forbes says that "it takes some dexterity to climb in and out; if you're 5 feet, 9 inches or taller, you're guaranteed to bump your head on the way in." Likewise, the Chicago Times comments, "This is one of those low-slung 'drop-in/climb-out' sports cars that calls for athletic moves to get in and out."

Interior Features

The BMW Z4 comes standard with a leather-covered multi-function sport steering wheel, automatic climate control, cruise control, six-way manually-adjustable sport seats, power-heated mirrors, leather upholstery, a THX-Certified premium audio system with ten speakers, and an auxiliary audio input adapter for MP3 players.

For the most part, reviewers like the controls layout. "Gauges can be quickly read, and the transmission shifter and dashboard controls are easily reached," says the Chicago Sun-Times. "Climate controls are fairly large, and the smaller sound system controls are set high," they add. Consumer Guide finds gauges are "well-placed," but also notes that "their graphics are not the best." A few reviewers, including MSN and the Chicago Sun-Times, note the sun visors are tiny. MSN also finds the seat belts hard to reach.

A DVD-based navigation system is optional for the BMW Z4. It comes with a dashboard-mounted pop-up monitor that retracts when not in use. Kelley Blue Book especially appreciates that the screen "rises from the center of the instrument panel, which is much better than having it integrated into the audio and climate controls."

However, the system's operation is still a sore spot with one reviewer. "I appreciate that BMW didn't offer the maddening iDrive controller; however, in its place, this nav system seems to have taken limited function to a whole new level," says the Los Angeles Times.

The Z4 coupe provides 12 cubic feet of cargo space in its rear hatch, which impresses most reviewers. "It looks unlikely from the outside, but the BMW Z4 Coupe will hold not one, but two (moderately sized) golf bags," says Forbes.

But Consumer Guide points out a drawback -- "the luggage bay is unevenly shaped." Also, both Consumer Guide and the Chicago Sun-Times describe interior storage spaces as "sparse."
