2019 BMW X6 Interior Review

Scorecard

Interior: 7.6

The 2019 BMW X6 looks great inside and uses high-quality materials throughout the cabin. The front seats are great, but the rear seats are less roomy, and the cargo hold is one of the smallest in the class. There's a robust features list, including an easy-to-use infotainment system.

  • "Inside, the passenger cabin sports a handsome design and top-quality materials that give the space a decidedly upscale look. That said, you'll find the interior to be the source of the X6's compromised utility. For starters, the three-person backseat is really suitable only for two people of shorter stature because the roofline is low and the seats' center section is high. Finally you'll find significantly less cargo space than in the automaker's X5 SUV on which the X6 is based." -- Edmunds (2017)
  • "More important, [the interior] … can make you think that you're in something pretty special. You can select the usual BMW-style monochromatic trim, but now there are additional trim levels that offer dramatic color combinations and high-style detailing that make you feel as if you are indeed riding in a Range Rover." -- Automobile Magazine (2015)
  • "Those familiar with BMW's X5 will find the X6's cabin a near clone. That's a compliment, as the layout is both attractive and ergonomically efficient, featuring easy-to-use round knobs for the audio and climate controls. The upgraded Dakota leather is buttery soft – some of the nicest hides we have ever felt – and the seats are extraordinarily comfortable." -- Autoblog (2015)

Seating

The X6 seats five and comes standard with Dakota leather upholstery and heated, 14-way power-adjustable front seats. Merino or Nappa leather upholstery, ventilated front seats, 18-way power-adjustable front seats, 20-way power-adjustable front seats, heated rear seats, and a heated steering wheel are available. The X6 has two full sets of LATCH car-seat connectors.

Both rows of seats provide plenty of support and comfort. The spacious front seats can accommodate even tall adults, and drivers enjoy great forward visibility. The rear seats offer less head- and legroom than the front, but adults can fit in the back for short trips.

  • "Exterior noise stays there, keeping the cabin quiet. Seat comfort is excellent up front and acceptable in the rear." -- Edmunds (2017)
  • "The front seats are a comfortable and rewarding place to be, and the leathers are sublime and padded everywhere, and the trim and controls are all top-notch. Even though rear-seat passengers have decent legroom and their own dual-zone climate control (standard on the V8 models, optional on 6-cylinder models), the lack of headroom makes it a short-term proposition for most passengers. But just fold the seatbacks down – you'll need the extra cargo space anyhow – and pretend the X6 is the coupe it so desperately wants to be." -- Kelley Blue Book (2017)
  • "BMW has created a vaguely coupelike feel with the X6's slightly lower seating position, but there's still a commanding view of the road, along with world-class comfort and support with the available multicontour front seats." -- Autotrader (2016)

Interior Features

Standard features in the X6 include a moonroof, dual-zone automatic climate control, and the iDrive infotainment system, which includes a 10.2.-inch touch screen, a touchpad controller, navigation, a nine-speaker hi-fi audio system, HD Radio, Bluetooth, a USB port, and Apple CarPlay. Standard driver assistance features include adaptive cruise control, a rearview camera, front and rear parking sensors, rain-sensing windshield wipers, blind spot monitoring, lane departure warning, forward collision warning, pedestrian detection, and automatic emergency braking. Some of these features are part of BMW's Active Driving Assistant.

Available features include quad-zone automatic climate control, wireless device charging, a DVD player and rear headrest screens, an upgraded infotainment system with a Wi-Fi hot spot, satellite radio, and a 16-speaker Harman Kardon sound system or a 16-speaker Bang & Olufsen surround-sound system. Available driver assistance features include a surround-view camera, a head-up display, parallel and perpendicular park assist, automatic high beams, and night vision assist.

The iDrive system gives you several ways to adjust settings: You can use the touch screen, the touchpad controller, or the physical buttons and knobs. The touch screen's sharp graphics make it easy to see and read the on-screen menus, and though there's a slight learning curve, the system is easy to use once you adjust to it.

  • "The iDrive system's large 10.2-inch touchscreen is a useful improvement, and its control knob and touchpad are easier to use than ever before. That said, it can still take a little longer to do everyday tasks with iDrive than with competing infotainment systems." -- Edmunds (2017)
  • "In comparison to the X6's other interior features, the 10.2-inch high-resolution display screen looks like a 72-inch flat-screen TV in a studio apartment. Not that we mind as the display provides crystal-clear navigation guidance, entertainment info and readouts." -- Kelley Blue Book (2017)
  • "The iDrive infotainment system has improved steadily over the years. The X6 gets the top grade with a beautiful widescreen display, navigation, hard-drive music storage and an advanced controller with touchpad functionality." -- Autotrader (2016)

Cargo

The X6 has a 26.6-cubic-foot cargo area behind the rear seats. Standard 40/20/40-split-folding rear seats give you the ability to expand your hauling space to 59.7 cubic feet. Most other luxury midsize SUVs have more cargo space than this BMW. A power liftgate comes standard, and a hands-free liftgate is available.

  • "When it comes time to haul plunder instead of passengers, the X6's cargo hold offers only 26.6 cubic feet of space behind the rear seats. Fold all three sections of the 40/20/40-split rear seatbacks down and you end up with 59.7 cubic feet of stowage. To put this last number into perspective, the Porsche Cayenne, which isn't exactly the poster child for practical crossovers, offers a total of 62.9 cubic feet." -- Edmunds (2017)
  • "Cargo space behind the rear seats measures 20.5 cu ft., a modest figure for a large crossover SUV. Folding down the 40/20/40-split rear seats opens that up to 53.9 cu ft., another humble measurement. The 4-door Volkswagen Golf compact hatchback has a similar amount of space." -- Autotrader (2016)
  • "The X6 has always been challenged in terms of utility … and the new model is no different. … At least the power-assisted tailgate has been programmed to open and close at the touch of a button, and V8 models get a hands-free system, with sensors beneath the rear bumper to detect foot movements, as standard equipment." -- Autoblog (2015)
