2012 BMW X6 Overview

Whether you choose the X6 xDrive35i with its turbocharged six-cylinder engine, or the X6 xDrive50i with its twin-turbocharged V8, reviewers said the 2012 BMW X6 has plenty of power. However, some noted that the X6 xDrive50i is particularly swift, offering ample power on the highway. Both models come with an eight-speed automatic transmission and all-wheel drive. The high-performance X6 M is also available, which features a 555-horsepower twin-turbocharged V8 engine and a six-speed automatic transmission. The base X6 xDrive35i gets an EPA-estimated 16/23 mpg city/highway, which is typical for an all-wheel drive luxury midsize SUV. Test drivers said the X6 handles impressively for an SUV, citing strong brakes and excellent grip on curvy roads. Additionally, the 2012 X6 pleases critics with its firm, yet comfortable, ride.

Test drivers said the BMW X6 has an elegant cabin with rich materials and quality construction. The front seats are very supportive and comfortable but the low roofline hinders rearward visibility and eats into back-seat headroom, critics said. The base X6’s back seat only accommodates two passengers, but a three-seat rear bench is available. The 2012 X6 offers up to 60 cubic feet of cargo space, which is less than what many luxury midsize SUVs offer. The BMW X6 comes with a 10-speaker CD audio system with an iPod/USB input, HD Radio, BMW’s iDrive infotainment system, a power liftgate, a sunroof, heated front seats, leather upholstery and front and rear parking sensors. Available features include Bluetooth, navigation, a premium surround-sound audio system with satellite radio, heated rear seats, four-zone automatic climate control, a head-up display and a rear-seat entertainment system. Some reviewers reported that the available navigation system can be difficult to use, and that the iDrive system makes it difficult to access some climate and audio settings.

Other SUVs to Consider

Reviewers said the 2012 Porsche Cayenne is one of the best-performing SUVs on the market. Like the X6, it comes standard with all-wheel drive, and reviewers said the Cayenne features an upscale cabin and a comfortable and spacious back seat.

The 2012 BMW X5 has a larger cargo area and many of the same features as the X6, and reviewers were very impressed with its luxurious cabin and sporty handling. Additionally, the X5 gets impressive fuel economy for the class when equipped with an available turbodiesel engine.
