2011 BMW X6 Review

The 2011 BMW X6 has sporty looks and performance, but its limited practicality led most reviewers to recommend other luxury midsize SUVs.

Pros & Cons

  • Good performance for an SUV
  • Poor rearward visibility
  • Only seats four
  • Limited usefulness

2011 BMW X6 Overview

The 2011 BMW X6 drives better than some SUVs and provides more cargo space than many sport sedans, but most reviewers said BMW missed the sweet spot of practicality and sport the X6 aims for.  Most reviewers agreed that the X6 neither functions well purely as an SUV or purely as a fun-to-drive toy, leading many to wonder what purpose it actually serves. "If it seems like we think the X6 is vehicular nonsense, you'd be right,” writes Edmunds. “There's just no logical reason someone should purchase one instead of any number of more focused luxury vehicles.”

Test drivers said the X6 isn’t much good as an SUV since it seats only four, its back-seat headroom is compromised and it can’t hold as much cargo as many competitors. Its SUV-style high ground clearance and nearly three-ton curb weight decrease its handling ability, so it’s not as good a sport sedan as the 2011 BMW 5-Series, although it does drive better than many other SUVs. Even its new-for-2011 hybrid trim isn’t very practical. Rather than improving fuel economy, it simply adds more power compared with the base model.

Other SUVs to Consider

The 2011 Acura ZDX offers similar coupe-like styling, but since it cost significantly less than the BMW X6 when it was new, you’ll likely be able to find a lower price on a used one as well. It also has seating for five, unlike the X6.

For a better combination of performance and practicality, test drive the 2011 Porsche Cayenne. Reviewers said the Cayenne is one of the best-driving SUVs on the market, and it’s much roomier inside than the BMW.
