2009 BMW X6 Review

The 2009 BMW X6 has bold styling and great performance. However, with just four seats and limited cargo space, test drivers wondered what point of the X6 is.

Pros & Cons

  • Powerful engines with athletic handling
  • Unique looks
  • Especially comfortable seats
  • Sacrifices visibility in favor of styling

2009 BMW X6 Overview

When it was new, reviewers weren’t quite sure what to make of the 2009 BMW X6, which BMW called a “Sports Activity Coupe.” Its looks make the X6 stand out from the crowd, and it’s one of the sportiest SUVs on the market. The X6 has comfortable seats and standard all-wheel drive. Its X6 M trim has even more power and better handling. However, many testers wondered whether SUV shoppers would be willing to trade practicality for style and performance.

Defining the X6’s market isn’t its only problem. When it was new, the X6 cost much more than competing SUVs. On all trims, the X6’s fuel economy is disappointing, though it’s not much worse than the X6’s all-wheel drive competitors. When it was new, reviewers also noted that the coupe-like styling on the 2009 BMW X6 meant the outward visibility was significantly compromised.

A sunroof, rain-sensing windshield wipers, leather, power front seats, parking sensors and dual-zone climate control are among the X6’s standard features. Most options were grouped into packages when the X6 was new, and include features like a power liftgate, Bluetooth, heated seats, ventilated front seats, push-button start and an upgraded stereo.

Other Cars to Consider

Those who want a bit more space without sacrificing performance should consider the 2009 Porsche Cayenne. Reviewers said it was one of the most fun-to-drive SUVs on the market, especially if you opt for S, Turbo or Turbo S trims. Like the X6, the Cayenne comes standard with all-wheel drive and striking exterior styling.

For a more budget-friendly and practical option, also take a look at the 2009 Infiniti FX. It offers a V6 or a V8 engine, as well as rear- or all-wheel drive. The FX’s cabin is especially upscale and high-tech for a luxury SUV, and test drivers said its handling is among the best they’ve found in an SUV. Along with the X6 and Cayenne, the FX’s looks may be off-putting to some, but others may appreciate the stand-out appeal of its bold styling.
