2020 BMW X5 Interior Review

Scorecard

Interior: 7.8

The 2020 BMW X5 has an upscale interior with quality materials and user-friendly tech features. The first and second rows are spacious, and the seats are comfortable. Cargo space is impressive as well. Critics point to two drawbacks: The optional third-row seats are cramped, and the interior styling may be too bland for some tastes.

  • "The standard front seats are supportive and great. However, we're big fans of the optional 20-way multicontour seats, which are among the best in any vehicle. Regarding the third row, it's a nice option, but it's most suited to the smaller and younger members of the family." -- Autotrader
  • "The interior is a big improvement if you have any negative perceptions of BMW interiors. While it is still, yes, depressingly gray-toned everywhere … the actual packaging is simpler and straightforward, and the technology is pretty good too." -- Jalopnik (2019)
  • "The interior of the new X5 is a perfect exemplar of BMW's design know-how. We loved the look and feel of the perforated leather seats. The combination of wood and leather on the dash and door panels is a pleasant one, without feely gaudy or gauche." -- Autoblog (2019)

Seating

The BMW X5 comes standard with five seats. An optional third row is available, raising the X5’s seating capacity to seven. The front seats are supportive and well-cushioned, and they remain comfortable over longer drives. The second-row seats are cozy as well, and both of these rows provide generous head- and legroom for taller adults. The third row is cramped by comparison and is really only suitable for children on shorter trips.

Standard amenities include synthetic leather upholstery, heated front seats, and 16-way power- adjustable front seats. Available features include genuine leather upholstery, 20-way power-adjustable front seats, ventilating and massaging front seats, a heated steering wheel, heated rear seats, heated armrests, and heated and cooled cup holders.

For securing child safety seats, there are two complete sets of LATCH connectors for the X5’s rear outboard seats, as well as an upper tether for the rear middle seat. According to the Insurance Institute for Highway Safety, the anchors are easy to find and can’t be confused with other hardware.

  • "Even after hours in the front seats, we weren't wiggling in our seats and removing items from our pockets to stay comfortable. It was quiet, too. It took some genuine heavy-footing in order to hear the inline-6 working underhood." -- Autoblog (2019)
  • "The X5's third row is optional, and while its second row remains quite accommodating, the sixth and seventh seats look to be, as they were before, for kids only." -- Car and Driver (2019)
  • "The front seats are comfortable but somewhat wide, and forward visibility is very good." -- Edmunds (2019)

Interior Features

The BMW X5 comes equipped with the iDrive infotainment system and includes a 12-inch touch screen, Apple CarPlay, navigation, HD Radio, satellite radio, a 10-speaker stereo, Bluetooth, and five USB ports. Other standard features include proximity keyless entry, push-button start, dual-zone automatic climate control, a digital gauge cluster, and a panoramic moonroof.

This iDrive infotainment system is very user-friendly. It boasts a large touch screen, slick graphics, a simple menu structure, and redundant controls. You can access and adjust features using voice commands, dashboard buttons, a touchpad and dial on the center console, or by tapping and swiping on the screen. Critics are split on the optional gesture control system, which allows you to control certain features using hand signals. Some find it helpful, but most find it annoying.

Other available features include remote start, quad-zone automatic climate control, a Wi-Fi hot spot, wireless device charging, 12- and 16-speaker Harman Kardon stereos, and a 20-speaker Bowers & Wilkins sound system.

Standard driver assistance features include a rearview camera, front and rear parking sensors, adaptive pivoting LED headlights with automatic high beams, forward collision warning, pedestrian detection, automatic emergency braking, lane departure warning, blind spot monitoring, and rear cross traffic alert.

Available safety features include adaptive cruise control, lane keep assist, a semi-autonomous traffic jam assist, a night vision camera, a surround-view parking camera system, hands-free parallel park assist, and a head-up display.

  • "It should come as no surprise that the 2019 BMW X5 packs its fair share of tech. Most impressive is BMW's latest iDrive entertainment system that's more customizable and faster than before. The rotary controller now has haptic feedback, and the center screen can also be controlled by touch or by hand gestures. In our brief time behind the wheel, we found the gestures reliable in controlling things such as audio volume and screen selections." -- Edmunds (2019)
  • "The X5's instrument cluster is fully digital, and it and the 12.3-inch central display boast new software with crisp, clear graphics and easy-to-understand menu structures accessed via the familiar iDrive controller." -- Car and Driver (2019)
  • "BMW has made [iDrive] improvements over the years, but we're happy to report that this new system finally feels like it really got it right. The large central display can display a lot of information, and is configurable to … put the info you want at the forefront. We found it far easier to find our way through the system, whether we were using the touchscreen or the iDrive control wheel by the gear lever – gesture control still felt awkward, though. We'll be pleased to see this system replace the current-generation of iDrive in other BMWs." -- Autoblog (2019)

Cargo

The X5 has 33.9 cubic feet of cargo space with its second-row seats upright and 72.3 cubic feet of room with all rear seats folded. This cargo area is larger than what most luxury midsize SUV class competitors offer, though it isn’t class-leading. A power liftgate and a two-piece power tailgate come standard. The lower portion of the tailgate swings down or can remain in place, while the upper portion swings up. This design helps keep smaller items from rolling onto the ground when loading cargo.

  • "The split tailgate, which now opens and closes completely under electric power, seems a little gimmicky, too, until you actually go to use it. The lower section opens level with the load floor, making it easy to shove stuff in there, and can easily support the weight of a grown man." -- Autoblog (2019)
  • "Out back, the rear hatch is split horizontally to include a tailgate. There's a hands-free option that enables the split tailgate to open when you swipe your foot below the rear bumper. Cargo volume … is more than a Porsche Cayenne or an Audi Q7 offers." -- Edmunds (2019)
  • "For loading cargo, you can open the top, bottom, or both parts of the split tailgate by pushing a button. A super-slick option coming in January is a power cargo cover that rolls back and disappears in the floor between the second and third rows. The cargo area has anti-slip rails and a deep storage bin in the back for the third-row seat, which will be available in December." -- Motor Trend (2019)
