2019 BMW X4 Performance Review

Scorecard

Performance: 8.4

The all-wheel-drive 2019 BMW X4 is one of the most athletic vehicles in the class. It gives you a choice between two potent turbocharged engines, both of which are paired with a smooth-shifting automatic transmission. The X4 rides smoothly and handles winding roads with ease.

  • "Anyone with cornering on their mind, however, will want the X4 M40i. That extra 100-ish horsepower makes it significantly quicker than the four-cylinder model, hitting 60 mph in a claimed 4.6 seconds. Add in the larger brakes, adaptive suspension, and the optional M Sport differential, and you have a surprisingly enjoyable corner carver. The crackling sports exhaust is just a bonus." -- Motor Trend
  • "But back to control. The steering appropriately quick and properly weighted: light on center, no dead spot, effort builds as you wind it up. This X4 is fun, a blast to hustle around South Carolina's hilly back roads. As a bend tightens, just crank on the wheel to keep it between the lines, because there's plenty of grip to work with. It's easy to keep it on the left side of the lane, the right side or dead center." -- Autoweek
  • "When I'm out of the mountains and back on flat terrain, Comfort mode smooths out the behavior of the X4. Steering lightens, the suspension softens for better ride compliance, and the drivetrain settles down for more relaxed motoring. Surprisingly, there's not much tire noise from the wide 20-inchers at the corners, nor is wind noise an issue on the expressway, largely thanks to the X4's slippery drag coefficient of 0.30." -- CNET

Acceleration and Power

The base X4, the xDrive30i, comes with a turbocharged 2.0-liter four-cylinder engine that puts out 248 horsepower. This engine has plenty of juice for most driving situations, though it doesn't make the X4 feel like a dynamo. The standard eight-speed automatic transmission shifts smoothly and ensures that you always have power on tap when you need it.

The performance-oriented X4 M40i features a turbocharged 3.0-liter six-cylinder that produces 355 horsepower. The extra horsepower really makes a difference when you hit the gas, and the M40i feels noticeably quicker than the base trim. According to BMW, the M40i will go from zero to 60 mph in just 4.6 seconds, a time that rivals that of some sports cars.

The X4 earns an EPA-estimated 22 mpg in the city and 29 mpg on the highway with its standard engine. Those are better ratings than many class rivals get. The six-cylinder's ratings drop to 20 mpg in the city and 27 mpg on the highway.

  • "Both engines are absolutely sublime. The xDrive30i's four-cylinder feels strong and smooth and is one of the best 2.0-liter turbo engines on the market, and there are many out there. There's copious off-the-line torque and plenty enough horsepower for passing tractors or trucks on Carolina backroads. … Shifts from the ZF eight-speed automatic are quick and unobtrusive. As great as the four-cylinder is, the M40i packs the real sweetheart. The engine … feels easy and effortless." -- Autoblog
  • "For the uphill climbs and runs out of corners, the X4's 2.0-liter turbocharged four-cylinder is sufficiently peppy. … Swapping cogs is a familiar ZF-sourced 8-speed automatic transmission, delivering fast and fluid shifts in auto mode and also exhibiting excellent response to manual shift commands." -- CNET
  • "Acceleration is smooth and strong with very little turbo lag at low engine speeds and great pull as the … revs climb. And it's easy to keep the engine speeds where you want them by using the paddle shifters. I won't fawn all over the sound of the thing, like Mr. Warner, but boy it is brisk. Shifts from the eight-speed are dual-clutch transmission fast in sport and sport-plus mode. The inline-six pops and blats on shifts -- all natural sound, by the way, which can be heard in the cabin. Call it childish, but I'm always a fan. Putting it in comfort mode quiets everything down." -- Autoweek

Handling and Braking

Like its predecessor, the redesigned X4 is a class leader when it comes to handling. Whether you stick with the base trim or opt for the M40i, you're getting an SUV that has little lean through turns and handles winding roads with competence. Despite its handling ability, the X4 rides smoothly. There are four selectable driving modes (Eco Pro, Comfort, Sport, and Sport+) that alter driving dynamics. All-wheel drive comes standard.

  • "Body motions are well controlled no matter the drive mode, and even in its stiffest setting the X4 stays plenty supple, not anywhere near M3 stiff. It never crashed over big bumps either. Body roll is minimal, yet the X4 is comfortable." -- Autoweek
  • "Even though it's the base model, the X4 xDrive30i will also hold its own on a winding back road. It's no sports car, but with a standard M Sport suspension, it's competent enough in the corners. Especially in Sport+ mode." -- Motor Trend
  • "On the road, the xDrive30i is quiet and comfortable. The ride is on the softer side in the Comfort setting, stepping up the firmness and throttle response in Sport mode. The ride is composed, with a moderate amount of body roll. In Comfort, the chassis soaks up the pavement, though the drive route in North and South Carolina provided smooth asphalt. Sport mode drops the ride quality significantly and is hardly worth using unless you plan to carve corners on your commute." -- Autoblog
