2019 BMW X4 Interior Review

Interior: 6.5

The redesigned 2019 BMW X4 features a much better interior than the outgoing model, with a cleaner design and higher-quality materials. That said, the X4's cabin lacks the panache of rival interiors and doesn't have the opulent feel you find in some other German SUVs from Mercedes-Benz and Audi.

The X4's seats are comfortable and supportive, and the iDrive infotainment system is user-friendly. Cargo space is poor for the class.

  • "The same goes for the X4's interior. Everything – from the round dials (now digital) to the placement of the vents to the slight driver-canted dashboard – is exactly where and how you expect it to be in a BMW. It's clean, handsome and well laid out, but it's an evolution of the same thing we've seen for years. It's a welcome upgrade over the outgoing model, but BMW isn't doing anything new or interesting with wood or dash design like you might find in an Audi, Lexus, or the current crop of Volvos." -- Autoblog
  • "Inside, the X4's cabin looks like it was pulled straight out of the X3, with only a few accommodations made for the sloping roof. Considering how cheap the first-gen X4's interior felt, that's a good thing. BMW used significantly nicer materials this time around that, when paired with the cabin's more modern design, make the X4 feel much more luxurious. That said, the interior isn't quite up to the standard set by the X4's most direct competitor, the Mercedes-Benz GLC Coupe." -- Motor Trend
  • "X4 drivers ensconced in the all-day-comfortable and supportive sport seats will find the same quality materials, taut panel fits, and informative digital instrument panel." -- Car and Driver

The X4 seats five and comes standard with leatherette upholstery and power-adjustable front sport seats. Leather upholstery, front seats with added power adjustability, heated front seats, heated rear seats, and a heated steering wheel are available. There are two full sets of LATCH car-seat connectors.

The front seats give you little reason to complain. They're comfortable and supportive, and the ample bolstering keeps you in place when going around corners. The rear seats have a decent amount of legroom, and most passengers will probably find headroom reasonable, though the sloping roofline will impact taller riders.

  • "On the plus side, the seats are supportive and adjustable with good thigh support and side bolstering. Besides the gesture control mishaps, the interior is a pleasant place to be." -- Autoweek
  • "Considering the X4's coupe-like roofline, the designers also deserve credit for giving rear passengers more room than you'd expect. There's one more much-appreciated inch of legroom than before and enough headroom to accommodate most passengers." -- Motor Trend
  • "For rear passengers, there's an extra inch of legroom over the old model – a welcome addition, even if the sloping roof cuts off headroom." -- New York Daily News

Interior Features

Standard features in the X4 include a panoramic moonroof, automatic climate control, a 12-speaker audio system, HD Radio, Apple CarPlay, navigation, and the iDrive infotainment system with a 10.25-inch touch screen. Available features include a 16-speaker Harman Kardon audio system, satellite radio, wireless device charging, and a Wi-Fi hot spot.

Standard driver assistance features include a rearview camera, front and rear parking sensors, forward collision warning, automatic emergency braking, pedestrian detection, and adaptive cruise control.

Available active safety features include a head-up display, a surround-view camera, parallel and perpendicular park assist, blind spot monitoring, lane departure warning, lane keep assist, evasion aid, and front and rear cross traffic alert.

The iDrive infotainment system is more user-friendly than some competitors' systems. The intuitive interface makes adjusting settings easy, the touch screen is large, and there are redundant physical controls for some functions. However, some critics say iDrive is distracting to use while on the go. Additionally, some rivals offer tech features this BMW doesn't, such as Android Auto.

  • "BMW's infotainment system, called iDrive, has been lauded for its usability after early versions of it garnered pretty much the opposite reaction. Yet I still don't like it that much, since it takes up far too much of your attention to perform basic tasks while driving, even if the bigger screen helps somewhat in that respect." -- Jalopnik
  • "Also like the X3, the X4 uses BMW's latest iDrive 6 infotainment system with a 10.25-inch touchscreen in the center stack. This infotainment pack offers navigation, a 12-speaker Harman Kardon audio system, voice recognition and BMW's weird-but-nifty gesture controls for adjusting volume and to accept or reject phone calls. Working through iDrive's various menus is intuitive with the system quickly flipping between screens, while the navigation system boasts nice map imagery and directs me to all route waypoints without any hiccups." -- CNET
  • "The central iDrive control screen is the same as in the X3, too: responsive, intuitive, and graphically modern." -- Car and Driver

The X4 has 18.5 cubic feet of cargo space behind the rear seats and 50.5 cubic feet of space with the rear seats folded down. That's one of the smallest cargo capacities in the class. A power liftgate comes standard.

  • "More often than not, SUVs offer little more actual room inside than a station wagon equivalent, if one even still exists in the same brand's lineup. In BMW's case, it does, and the 3 Series Sports Wagon offers a stunning 9 cu.-ft. more cargo space with the rear seats up and 11.5 more with the rear seats down, according to BMW's own figures. It's also shy 10 cu.-ft. compared to the X3." -- New York Daily News
  • "Rear passengers enjoy an extra inch of legroom compared to the old X4, there's 18.5 cubic-feet of cargo space in the hatch, or 50.5 with the rear seats folded flat. That's serviceable space, but substantially less than the X3's 28.7/62.7 measurements." -- CNET
