2015 BMW X4 Review

The 2015 BMW X4 has many positives, but it sits toward the bottom of the class because most luxury compact SUVs have more passenger and cargo room.

Pros & Cons

  • Potent six-cylinder engine
  • Intuitive infotainment system
  • Spry handling

  • Cramped rear seats
  • Limited cargo space

2015 BMW X4 Overview

Is the 2015 BMW X4 a Good Used SUV?

For the most part, the X4 is a good used SUV. It has powerful engines and spry handling. It has a luxurious cabin, loads of features, and comfortable front seats. The only real problems are due to the X4's coupelike body style. If you need room for rear-seat passengers or cargo, look elsewhere.

Used 2015 BMW X4 Performance and Interior

Two engines are available for the X4: a turbocharged four-cylinder in xDrive28i models and a turbocharged six-cylinder in xDrive35i models. The six-cylinder is punchy and quickly moves the X4 from a stop. Both engines are paired with a quick-shifting eight-speed automatic transmission. The X4 xDrive28i gets typical gas mileage for the class, at 20 mpg in the city and 28 mpg on the highway. The X4 is one of the most athletic SUVs in the class thanks to its tight steering and well-tuned suspension. The X4's standard all-wheel drive helps keep the SUV planted around turns.

BMW is known for its handsome, high-end interiors, and the X4 lives up to the brand's reputation. It has a stylish dashboard, premium materials, and excellent fit and finish. The front seats are comfortable, offering a good view of the road ahead. The view to the rear, however, is obstructed by the sloping roofline. The roof also limits space in the rear seats, which have little head- and legroom.

High-tech features like Bluetooth, a USB port, satellite radio, and the iDrive infotainment system with a console-mounted control knob come standard in the X4. The controls for audio, climate, and navigation are absorbed into the easy-to-use infotainment system that has intuitive menus. Some settings can be accessed with redundant dashboard buttons to minimize driver distraction. The X4 has one of the smallest cargo areas in the class, with only 17.7 cubic feet of room behind the rear seats and 49.4 cubic feet with them folded.

Which Used BMW X4 Is Right for Me?

The BMW X4 xDrive28i and xDrive35i offer the same features but different engines; the base xDrive28i has a turbocharged four-cylinder, while the xDrive35i has a turbo six-cylinder. Most buyers should be satisfied with the base model.

You might consider a certified pre-owned X4. The BMW CPO program has three levels based on the vehicle’s age and the number of miles on the odometer: Certified Pre-Owned Elite, Certified Pre-Owned, and Pre-Owned. Each level receives the balance of the original new-car warranty. Certified Pre-Owned Elite vehicles get an additional one-year/25,000-mile warranty, while Certified Pre-Owned models receive an additional two-year/50,000-mile warranty. Pre-Owned BMWs receive no additional coverage. Each BMW undergoes an inspection before earning CPO status. Additional benefits like towing and roadside assistance may be available, so read the BMW warranty page carefully.

2015 BMW X4 and Other SUVs to Consider

Which Is Better: 2015 BMW X4 or 2015 Porsche Macan?

While the Porsche Macan may cost you more than the X4, the extra money is worth it. The Macan can best the X4's poised, sports-car-like handling, and it's a better daily driver too. The Macan has an exceptional predicted reliability rating that beats the X4's. Inside, the Macan's back seat has enough room for most adults, though tall occupants may feel cramped. The Macan also has more cargo space than the X4.

Which Is Better: 2015 BMW X4 or 2015 Audi Q5?

The Audi Q5 offers many of the X4's positives – punchy engines and athletic handling – without sacrificing interior space and utility. The Q5 has comfortable and roomy seats in both rows and significantly more room for your stuff behind the seats. However, the Q5 has a stiffer ride than the X4 and a lower (though average) predicted reliability rating.

Which Is Better: 2015 BMW X4 or 2015 BMW X6?

The X4 and the larger midsize BMW X6 both have a coupelike sloping roofline, so both models have limited room in the back seat and cargo area, though the X6 offers slightly more cargo space. If you're comparing base models, the X6 will cost you significantly more. However, since the X6 comes standard with a six-cylinder engine, the price gap closes if you're looking at the X4 xDrive35i. You'll also get more standard features with the X6, including a larger infotainment screen, navigation, and leather upholstery.
