2019 BMW X3 Interior Review

Interior: 7.9

The 2019 BMW X3 uses plenty of premium materials throughout its attractive cabin, but the interior lacks the panache of some competitors. The seats are spacious and comfortable, and cargo capacity is good for the class. There are plenty of standard and available features, including a user-friendly infotainment system.

  • "BMW's X3 has the same design aesthetic as other recent vehicles from the German luxury brand. There's a wide-view display mounted high on the dash, the iDrive control knob alongside BMW's unique gear selector, and the same ergonomics of the BMW ownership experience for the past couple of decades. It leans more toward the minimalistic end, but there's built-in premium feel to its simplicity." -- Kelley Blue Book
  • "The interior materials convincingly support the notion of the X3 as a premium-brand vehicle, and the front-seat occupants both enjoy standard sport seats with 10-way power adjustment." -- Car and Driver (2018)
  • "Inside, the interior is still traditional BMW; most of the controls are canted to the driver, there aren't particularly interesting shapes or materials, and the gauge and switch gear lighting is still a red-orange hue. Of course, this latter design aspect also means the various ambient lighting colors don't necessarily match nicely with the switchgear, something this editor has griped about before." -- Autoblog (2018)

The BMW X3 seats five and comes standard with leatherette upholstery and 10-way power-adjustable front seats. Leather upholstery, 14-way power-adjustable front seats, heated and ventilated front seats, heated rear seats, and a heated steering wheel are available.

The X3's front seats remain supportive even on long drives, and both rows provide ample space for all but the tallest adult passengers. You can fit two adults in the back seat with no problem, but three makes a crowd.

There are two full sets of LATCH car-seat connectors in the rear seats. The tether anchors are easy to find and identify, but the lower anchors have a couple of issues. They're set deep in the seat and are tough to maneuver around.

  • "The X3 is extraordinarily roomy inside, even for its compact class. The driver and front passenger have plenty of space, and most rear-seat passengers will find good legroom. Headroom is similarly plentiful …" -- Kelley Blue Book
  • "The rear seat is roomy enough for two adults, though three can fit in a pinch. Young children won't have any problem scrambling up into the cabin, and those in booster seats will be able to reach and access the seat-belt receptacles and secure themselves." -- Consumer Reports (2018)
  • "Like most compact luxury SUVs, the BMW X3's rear seat is just roomy enough that two adults won't complain, and kids will have plenty of room." -- New York Daily News (2018)

Interior Features

Standard features in the X3 include tri-zone automatic climate control, Bluetooth, a USB port, a 12-speaker audio system, HD Radio, and the iDrive infotainment system with a 6.5-inch touch screen. Available features include a panoramic moonroof, a 16-speaker Harman Kardon audio system, satellite radio, proximity keyless entry, navigation, wireless charging, Apple CarPlay, and a Wi-Fi hot spot.

Standard driver assistance features include a rearview camera, front and rear parking sensors, driver drowsiness monitoring, forward collision warning, automatic emergency braking, pedestrian detection, and traffic sign recognition. Available active safety features include a head-up display, lane departure warning, lane keep assist, front and rear cross traffic alert, blind spot monitoring, adaptive cruise control, parallel park assist, and a surround-view camera.

It takes some time to master the infotainment controls, but they sit within easy reach of the driver and work well once you get used to them. The iDrive system offers gesture control as well, meaning you can make adjustments to some functions just by waving your hand in front of the screen.

  • "Controls for common functions like audio and climate are logical and easy to reach, but the iDrive circular controller for screen functions and even the pistol-like gearshift are best first studied at a standstill." -- Kelley Blue Book
  • "Still, BMW's latest approach to iDrive is an improvement, with clearly marked buttons that, once committed to memory, are easy to find by touch, combined with a meaty knob with positive articulation. Plus, this new version of iDrive supplies a touchscreen display for the first time, which is somewhat miraculous." -- New York Daily News (2018)
  • "Overall, the X3 is an impressive machine. But it's not perfect. BMW makes it quite difficult to find an X3 equipped with advanced safety equipment including high-speed automatic emergency braking. It's part of a $1,700 option package that is nearly impossible to find on X3s on dealer lots. In order to get it, you have to pay for other expensive option packages, including the $900 Driving Assistance Package, which includes forward-collision warning, low-speed automatic emergency braking, lane-departure warning, rear cross-traffic warning, and options of dubious value." -- Consumer Reports (2018)

The X3 provides 28.7 cubic feet of cargo space behind the second row and 62.7 cubic feet with the rear seats folded. Few class rivals offer more space. The X3's cargo hold isn't just big; the space is convenient and usable, and there's a small hidden space beneath the floor where you can stow valuables. A power liftgate comes standard.

  • "… cargo space is near the top of the class in both usability and outright space. In addition to a flat-floor cargo area, there's room for small items should you want to hide them beneath the floor." -- Kelley Blue Book
  • "Like most compact luxury SUVs, the well-finished cargo area is spacious enough for a family of four to take a weeklong road trip. Fold the second-row seats flat and there's plenty of space to swallow the goods from a big-box store." -- Consumer Reports (2018)
  • "The 40/20/40-split backseat reclines a few degrees but doesn't slide." -- Cars.com (2018)
