2011 BMW X3 Review

Reviewers said the 2011 BMW X3 is one of the best-handling compact SUVs, but a cramped cargo area means others in the class are more practical.

Pros & Cons

  • Great performance and handling
  • Good fuel economy for the class
  • Limited cargo space

2011 BMW X3 Overview

When it was new, critics praised the newly-redesigned 2011 BMW X3’s handling, which they compared with the much-loved BMW 3-Series sedan. The base X3 xDrive28i has an inline six-cylinder engine that produces 240 horsepower. Most critics found the base engine adequate, but greatly preferred the turbocharged engine in the xDrive35i that puts out 300 horsepower. The X3 comes standard with all-wheel drive and gets fairly good fuel economy for the class. With the base engine, fuel economy is 19/25 mpg city/highway, while the more powerful turbocharged model has a bit better mileage, at 19/26 mpg.

Inside, reviewers generally liked the redesigned X3’s design and material quality. While most reviewers also appreciated the increase in back-seat space, some still noted a lack of legroom. Maximum cargo capacity is 55.6 cubic feet, which is a little low for the class. Standard features include leatherette seat upholstery, automatic climate control, Bluetooth and BMW’s iDrive infotainment interface. Available features include leather upholstery, navigation, a power liftgate, a panoramic sunroof, a rearview camera and parking sensors. An adjustable suspension that optimizes the suspension’s handling and comfort settings is also available.

Other Cars to Consider

If you’re looking for a 2011 compact SUV with great performance, you may also like 2011 Infiniti EX. Critics loved its powerful engine, which they said has no problem moving the EX with authority. Keep in mind that its cargo capacity is even less than the X3’s, so those looking for more hauling ability should look elsewhere.

Another vehicle you may like is the 2011 Cadillac SRX. It doesn’t have the sport-sedan reflexes the X3 does, but it can carry more cargo, and critics said it has a smooth, comfortable ride. The SRX’s fuel economy isn’t as good as the X3’s, however.
