2021 BMW X1 Interior Review

Interior: 8.2

The 2021 BMW X1 has a ritzy cabin full of premium materials and soft-touch surfaces, though there are a few hard plastics in some out-of-the-way areas. It has a huge cargo hold and an intuitive infotainment system. Passenger space is decent too.

  • "The rest of the X1 conforms to BMW's usual high standards, with quality materials and excellent ergonomics." -- Autotrader
  • "The X1's interior is nicely appointed and crafted from mostly premium materials. Poke around, and you'll find evidence that BMW's accountants repurposed funds from the interior. The glovebox door is as flimsy as a plastic lunchbox, and the bin hidden under the front seat, while useful, feels as if BMW bought it in bulk from a dollar-store fire sale." -- Car and Driver (2020)
  • "This baby BMW's dash is sleek and angular. Materials have a premium look and feel, such as the soft-touch dash and wood accents. The standard SensaTec fake-leather seating feels down-market, though." -- Kelley Blue Book (2019)

This BMW’s 27.1 cubic feet of space behind the rear seats is one of the highest totals among luxury subcompact SUVs. Its 58.7 cubic feet behind the front seats is a great total too. A power liftgate is standard, and a hands-free liftgate is available.

  • "Cargo space is 27.1 cu ft. with the rear seats up, 58.7 cu ft. when they’re folded down. That’s pretty good for the class. Those rear seats split and fold in 40/20/40 fashion. The front passenger seat also folds down for extra cargo versatility." -- Autotrader
  • "The cargo area is carpeted, chrome-trimmed, and cavernous. We managed to fit seven of our carry-on cases behind the second row and 19 in total with the rear seat folded down." -- Car and Driver (2020)
  • "There's great utility in here, too, with 27.1 cubic feet of space behind the second row of seats, or a whopping 58.7 cubic feet with them folded. That's about 10 more cubic feet than what's offered in the Audi, Cadillac and Volvo." -- CNET (2019)

The X1 is a two-row SUV with seating for five people. With two people in the back, there is plenty of space, with a decent amount of head- and legroom. Adding a third occupant to the rear row would be a tight squeeze. All of the seats are supportive and well-cushioned.

Synthetic leather upholstery, eight-way power-adjustable front seats, and a leather-wrapped steering wheel come standard. Genuine leather upholstery, heated front seats, front sport seats, sliding and reclining rear seats, and a heated steering wheel are available.

For installing child safety seats, there are two complete sets of LATCH connectors for the rear outboard seats and a tether anchor for the rear middle seat. The setup is easy to use, although it can be tricky to maneuver around the lower anchors.

  • "Rear legroom is acceptable, although that middle seat is for occasional use only. Drivers who transport multiple rear passengers on a regular basis will probably want to consider something roomier." -- Autotrader
  • "The seats support you and feel comfortable. I appreciated the adjustable upper bolsters and squeezed them against my kidneys a touch." -- Autoweek (2020)
  • "The cockpit has a driver-focused layout, reinforcing the X1's sporty personality. Facing the driver is a businesslike gauge cluster that looks elegant and is readable at a glance. The driving position is great, although the steering-wheel adjustments could use more range of motion in both angle and reach." -- Car and Driver (2020)

Interior Features

You’ll find plenty of standard features in the X1, including an 8.8-inch touch screen for the infotainment system. Also included are Apple CarPlay, satellite radio, a seven-speaker stereo, navigation, a USB port, and Bluetooth.

Using the iDrive infotainment system is simple. It can be controlled via a dial on the console or the touch screen. Both methods are easy to use while driving.

Every X1 also comes with automatic climate control, push-button start, a rearview camera, front and rear parking sensors, forward collision warning, automatic emergency braking, speed limit recognition, and lane departure warning.

Available equipment includes navigation, wireless device charging, a 12-speaker Harman Kardon stereo, proximity keyless entry, a panoramic moonroof, parallel and perpendicular park assist, a head-up display, adaptive cruise control, and a following distance indicator.

  • "The company’s iDrive infotainment system has also evolved to a point where it’s one of the most user-friendly setups out there." -- Autotrader
  • "The X1's standard infotainment system is intuitive enough, and it's easy to operate while on the go." -- Car and Driver (2020)
  • "iDrive is relatively intuitive, controlled either though the touchscreen or by a dial on the center console. Navigation … offers crisp graphics and entering a destination with voice control is easy." -- CNET (2019)
