2019 BMW X1 Interior Review

Scorecard

Interior: 8.2

The 2019 BMW X1 stands out in the luxury subcompact SUV class for its abundant passenger and cargo space. Both rows of seats are comfortable for adults, and the X1's cargo area is among the largest in the class. Other highlights include the addition of several standard safety and technology features, including lane departure warning and a user-friendly touch-screen infotainment system. Road and wind noise are evident in the cabin, however.

  • "The X1's interior is typical BMW, with a horizontal design scheme and upscale materials throughout the cabin. The optional Dakota leather is super nice, as are the soft-touch surfaces and wood accents." -- CNET
  • This baby BMW's dash is sleek and angular. Materials have a premium look and feel, such as the soft-touch dash and wood accents. The standard SensaTec fake-leather seating feels down-market, though." -- Kelley Blue Book
  • "Tight tolerances between panels, quality leather-wrapped seats and surfaces, and sleek-looking brushed aluminum trim give the X1 the high-quality feel we've come to expect from BMW." -- Edmunds (2018)

Seating

There's seating for up to five people in the X1. Standard comfort features include eight-way power-adjustable front seats and synthetic leather upholstery. Some reviewers find the synthetic leather upholstery to be low-grade, but genuine leather is available. Other optional features include sliding and reclining rear seats, 10-way power-adjustable front sport seats, heated front seats, a heated steering wheel, and a panoramic moonroof. The X1 has two complete sets of LATCH car-seat connectors on the rear outboard seats and an additional upper tether for the rear middle seat.

Both rows of seats are comfortable and spacious, though rear-seat passengers may feel the squeeze if front passengers move their seats all the way back. Some critics say there's too much wind and road noise in the interior.

  • "Quite a bit of road and wind noise permeate the cabin … a little more sound insulation would be nice." -- CNET
  • The BMW X1 for 2019 is a 2-row/5-passenger SUV with plenty of room for people and cargo. Rear-seat passengers have excellent legroom unless the front passengers are so tall they have the front seats in their rearmost position." -- Kelley Blue Book
  • "The front seats offer a lot of adjustment for as much leg-, headroom and elbow room as you'll need to be comfortable. The rear seat accommodations are also the largest in class, particularly in leg- and headroom, and are suitable for adults." -- Edmunds (2018)

Interior Features

Among the X1's new standard technology is an iDrive infotainment system with a 6.5-inch touch screen, Apple CarPlay, navigation, and voice control. Other standard technology features include seven speakers, Bluetooth, and HD Radio. Forward collision warning, city collision mitigation, front and rear parking sensors, adaptive cruise control, pedestrian detection, lane departure warning, and automatic high beams are also newly standard. The X1 also comes standard with a rearview camera and rain-sensing windshield wipers.

Several optional packages and add-ons are available, including features like a head-up display, park assist, keyless entry, satellite radio, an 8.8-inch touch screen, a Wi-Fi hot spot, and a 12-speaker Harman Kardon premium audio system.

The iDrive infotainment system is easy to use. It's operated via a knob by the gear shift and a tabletlike touch screen at the top of the control panel. The rotary knob has a touchpad on it that recognizes handwriting, letting you write numbers and letters to enter addresses into the navigation system. The touch screen has logically arranged menus and controls that respond quickly to user inputs.

  • "The rest of the vehicle conforms to BMW's usual high standards, with quality materials and excellent ergonomics. And the company's iDrive infotainment system has evolved to point where it's one of the most user-friendly setups out there." -- Autotrader (2018)
  • "BMW's iDrive technology interface continues to improve with each iteration. It's easy to use, with an integrated touchpad on the main control dial that lets you scrawl text and number inputs with your fingertip. The menu structure is straightforward, and processing times are fast, helping minimize distraction." -- Edmunds (2017)
  • "The well-executed dashboard resembles those of larger BMW models, and the controls are within easy reach." -- Car and Driver (2016)

Cargo

With one of the most expansive cargo areas in the class, the X1 provides plenty of space for most luxury subcompact SUV shoppers. There's 27.1 cubic feet of cargo space behind the rear seats and 58.7 cubic feet when the split-folding 40/20/40 back row is down. The X1 comes standard with a power liftgate.

  • "There's great utility in here, too, with 27.1 cubic feet of space behind the second row of seats, or a whopping 58.7 cubic feet with them folded. That's about 10 more cubic feet than what's offered in the Audi, Cadillac and Volvo." -- CNET
  • "The BMW X1 for 2019 is a 2-row/5-passenger SUV with plenty of room for people and cargo." -- Kelley Blue Book
  • "The X1 sports the highest cargo capacity and lowest liftover height in its class. The cargo volume advantage is mainly due to the large underfloor storage where a spare tire might be otherwise. The 40/20/40-split second row folds flat." -- Edmunds (2018)
