2018 BMW X1 Interior Review

Scorecard

Interior: 8.4

The 2018 BMW X1 is one of the most spacious SUVs in the subcompact segment. Even larger passengers can spread out in the front or back seat, and the cargo hold boasts a class-leading amount of space. The X1 also passes the bar with its user-friendly infotainment system. Materials quality throughout the interior is good.

  • "The interior cargo area and ease of cabin access set the X1 apart from the pack. A smart use of under-floor compartments maximizes storage in the back, while the size of the door openings and seat placement make it easy to move in and out of the cabin." -- Edmunds
  • Materials have a premium look and feel, such as the soft-touch dash and wood accents. The standard SensaTec fake-leather seating feels down-market, though." -- Kelley Blue Book (2017)
  • "The redesigned interior is a welcome change in the second-gen X1, with more expensive-feeling materials in the cabin and plenty of standard features. Everything is well laid-out and within easy reach – BMW does not always get this right – and the seating position is well-matched to outward visibility." -- Autoweek (2016)

Seating

The X1 is a 2-row SUV with seating for five people. It comes standard with eight-way power-adjustable front seats, SensaTec upholstery (BMW's synthetic leather), and a leather-wrapped sport steering wheel. Genuine leather, heated front seats, a heated steering wheel, 10-way power-adjustable front sport seats, and sliding and reclining rear seats are available.

For connecting child safety seats, the X1 has two sets of lower anchors and three tether anchors. The hardware is mostly easy to locate and use (though maneuvering around the lower anchors may take a little extra effort).

The X1 feels quite roomy for a vehicle this size, with enough head- and legroom for tall passengers to comfortably fit in either row. If you regularly carry adults in the back seat, consider upgrading to the sliding and reclining second-row seats for extra comfort.

  • "The front seats offer a lot of adjustment for as much leg-, headroom and elbow room as you'll need to be comfortable. The rear seat accommodations are also the largest in class, particularly in leg- and headroom, and are suitable for adults." -- Edmunds
  • The only gripe is in the second row. While legroom is acceptable, that middle seat is for occasional use only. Drivers who regularly transport multiple rear passengers will probably want to upgrade to at least an X3." -- Autotrader (2017)
  • The BMW X1 for 2017 is a 2-row, 5-passenger SUV with plenty of room for people and cargo. Rear-seat passengers have excellent legroom unless the front passengers are so tall they have the front seats in their rearmost position. If this is the case, we recommend spending the additional $300 for the sliding rear-seat option that also reclines." -- Kelley Blue Book (2017)

Interior Features

Standard features in a 2018 X1 include BMW’s iDrive infotainment system, a 6.5-inch screen, a USB port, Bluetooth, HD Radio, seven speakers, push-button start, automatic climate control, a rearview camera, and rain-sensing windshield wipers. Interior options include navigation, wireless charging for enabled smartphones, a Wi-Fi hot spot, Apple CarPlay, a 12-speaker Harman Kardon audio system, satellite radio, an 8.8-inch infotainment display, a panoramic moonroof, a proximity key, parking sensors, adaptive cruise control with stop and go functionality, forward collision warning with pedestrian detection, collision mitigation braking, lane departure warning, a head-up display, traffic sign information, and automatic high beams.

Once you are familiar with it, the X1's infotainment system is easy to use. The bulk of settings are made using a rotary knob and buttons located between the front seats, with some additional buttons in the center stack. This keeps the display screen fingerprint-free, but it can require more attention from the driver than some touch-screen systems.

  • "BMW's iDrive technology interface continues to improve with each iteration. It's easy to use, with an integrated touchpad on the main control dial that lets you scrawl text and number inputs with your fingertip. The menu structure is straightforward, and processing times are fast, helping minimize distraction." -- Edmunds (2017)
  • "The well-executed dashboard resembles those of larger BMW models, and the controls are within easy reach." -- Car and Driver (2016)
  • "In the new dashboard, just above the new asymmetrical center console, is a new generation of BMW's iDrive infotainment, which is to say that's it's the same software that we've grown to love, but with snappier hardware underpinning it. … I did note that the system was responsive when clicking and scrolling around the various functions, and the iDrive controller feels intuitive and is an easy reach in its position on the center console." -- CNET (2016)

Cargo

The X1 has a 27.1-cubic-foot cargo hold behind the rear seats and a total capacity of 58.7 cubic feet when you lay down the 40/20/40-split-folding second-row seats. Both dimensions are significantly larger than what you get with similarly sized rivals. A standard power liftgate adds to the X1's convenience.

  • "The X1 sports the highest cargo capacity and lowest liftover height in its class. The cargo volume advantage is mainly due to the large underfloor storage where a spare tire might be otherwise." -- Edmunds
  • "Despite its rather modest dimensions, BMW's X1 compact SUV for 2017 offers surprisingly good interior cargo space. … Small storage cubbies throughout the cabin further increase the X1's cargo hauling abilities." -- Kelley Blue Book (2017)
  • "Cargo space is … pretty good for the class. Those rear seats split and fold in 40/20/40 fashion. The front passenger seat also folds down for extra cargo versatility." -- Autotrader (2017)
