The 2020 BMW 7 Series is incredibly spacious, offering more rear-seat legroom and trunk space than almost every other class rival. It has cutting-edge technology, including impressive safety options that help you with troublesome parking and tiresome traffic jams, but some infotainment controls aren't always reactive. Without exception, all materials are high quality.
The 7 Series is a long-wheelbase sedan that seats five people in its standard configuration. Models equipped with certain upgrades seat only four.
This sedan has comfortable and roomy front seats, but most passengers may want to draw straws over who gets to sit in the rear. The 7 Series has more rear-seat legroom than you’ll find in any other super luxury car. You can also tack on upgrades to fashion a first-class back seat.
Standard features include Dakota leather upholstery, 20-way power-adjustable front seats, heated front seats, a heated steering wheel, a power rear-window sunshade, and soft-close doors.
Available seating options include Nappa leather upholstery, an Alcantara headliner, massaging front and rear seats, heated and ventilated front and rear seats, heated armrests in the front and rear seats, power-adjustable rear seats, power rear side-window sunshades, and a power-adjustable rear-seat footrest.
For securing child safety seats, there are two complete sets of LATCH connectors for the 7 Series’ rear outboard seats. Each of the back seats has an upper tether and a set of lower anchors.
The 7 Series’ iDrive infotainment interface has a straightforward menu layout. Its standard voice command and gesture controls are convenient – when they work. Both systems have trouble providing seamless responses to your requests. Even with these hiccups, the system is mostly easy to use.
Standard features include a 10.2-inch touch screen, a 12.3-inch digital driver's display, Apple CarPlay, navigation, voice command and gesture controls, a 16-speaker Harman Kardon surround-sound audio system, Bluetooth, two USB ports, satellite radio, HD Radio, a Wi-Fi hot spot, and wireless device charging. A panoramic moonroof with a power sunshade, quad-zone automatic climate control, proximity keyless entry, push-button start, and puddle lights also come standard.
Available options include a panoramic dual-pane roof with LED accents, remote start, a 16-speaker Bowers & Wilkins surround-sound system, a rear-seat entertainment system, and a 7-inch rear-seat touch screen that doubles as a tablet and infotainment controller.
Standard driver assistance features in the 7 Series include a surround-view parking camera system, parking sensors, adaptive cruise control, adaptive LED headlights with automatic high beams, and rain-sensing windshield wipers. BMW’s Active Driving Assistant is standard, and it consists of forward collision warning, forward automatic emergency braking, lane departure warning, speed limit information, blind spot monitoring, and rear cross traffic alert.
Among the advanced safety options are a head-up display, front cross traffic alert, night vision, remote control parking, and a drive recorder that captures video and vehicle details when activated.
Also available is Evasion Assistant (which helps you avoid a potential collision), lane keep assist with side collision avoidance, adaptive cruise control with full stop-and-go capability, four-wheel active steering, and Traffic Jam Assist, which combines lane centering technology with adaptive cruise control and speed limit info. BMW also offers Emergency Stop Assist, a system that safely brings the car to a stop in the event of a health emergency.
The 7 Series has an 18.2-cubic-foot trunk, which is one of the largest you’ll find in a super luxury car. The trunk measures only 14.8 cubic feet in the 745e, as its battery pack takes up some luggage room. A hands-free power trunk lid and a rear-seat pass-through are standard.
