2019 BMW 7-Series Interior Review

Interior: 8.9

The 2019 BMW 7 Series is both elegant and modern. Wood trims and leather surfaces contribute to the cabin’s upscale feeling, while a long list of comfort, tech, and safety features provide utility and comfort. In general, four adults can sit comfortably in this sedan, enjoying ample space and individual climate settings. This vehicle also has one of the largest trunks in its class.

  • "The build quality is top-notch and refined, with exceptional-quality materials throughout." -- Edmunds
  • "The 2017 BMW 7 Series sedan's interior features elegant wood veneer, aluminum trim and chrome accents." -- Kelley Blue Book (2017)
  • "Luxury might be hard to pin down, but if you measure it by the length of the list of features and choices available, the new BMW 7-series definitely delivers it in spades." -- Car and Driver (2016)

The 7 Series seats five people on standard leather seats. Opting for the executive-style rear seats reduces seating capacity to four. Fourteen-way power-adjustable front seats with memory settings and heated front seats are standard. Ventilated front seats; 20-way power-adjustable front seats; heated, power-adjustable, massaging, and ventilated rear seats; upgraded leather upholstery; and a heated steering wheel are available. Also available are a power rear sunshade, power rear side-window sunshades, and iDrive infotainment controls for the rear-seat passengers. There are two complete sets of LATCH car-seat connectors in the rear seats.

Describing the 7 Series’ seats as thrones wouldn’t be much of an exaggeration. Each seat is comfortable and supportive – especially with some of the features listed above – and offers great visibility. This car’s long-wheelbase body especially benefits back-seat passengers, who enjoy a class-leading 44.4 inches of legroom.

  • "There's incredible interior space, and the extra-long doors make it easy to get in and out of this big sedan." -- Edmunds
  • "There isn't a bad seat in the house with the 7-Series, with each of the four outboard thrones providing plenty of comfort and support. It also helps that there are eight massage functions to choose from, in addition to heated and cooled seating functions." -- Left Lane News (2017)
  • "Rear seat room is, as you'd expect, excellent, and BMW's stadium seating arrangement means passengers get a decent view out the windshield." -- Motor Trend (2016)

Interior Features

Standard features in the 7 Series include quad-zone automatic climate control, proximity keyless entry, push-button start, a hands-free power trunk, a panoramic moonroof, qi-compatible wireless charging, and the iDrive infotainment system with a 10.2-inch touch screen, voice and gesture controls, HD Radio, satellite radio, a built-in navigation system, a 16-speaker Harman Kardon sound system, two USB ports, Bluetooth, and a Wi-Fi hot spot. A year-long subscription to Apple CarPlay is also standard, though Android Auto is not offered.

Several safety features are also standard, such as front and rear parking sensors, a rearview camera, adaptive headlights, adaptive cruise control, forward collision warning, automatic emergency braking, lane departure warning, blind spot monitoring, and rear cross traffic alert.

Many interior features are offered, mostly through packages. Some of these include a Bowers and Wilkins Diamond surround-sound system, a rear-seat entertainment system, a cabin air fragrance system, and numerous driver assistance technologies, such as night vision assist with pedestrian detection, a surround-view parking camera, parallel parking assist, a head-up display, lane keep assist, front cross traffic alert, stop-and-go capability for adaptive cruise control, and semiautonomous steering with the Traffic Jam Assistant.

The iDrive interface is not only intuitive but also innovative. Aside from the touchpad, smartphonelike pinch and swipe touch-screen controls, and steering wheel-mounted buttons, you can also control the system through gestures. It recognizes hand movements for adjusting volume or answering calls.

  • "The 7 Series offers an impressive array of technology, especially once you dip into the options menu. There's plenty of connectivity, but Apple CarPlay is oddly subscription-based and Android Auto isn't available at all. The standard accident avoidance tech is appreciated." -- Edmunds
  • "Instead of the usual dials in the instrument cluster, the 7 Series has a configurable 12.3-in display with pin-sharp graphics. Gesture control is another cool feature: To answer a phone call, point to a certain spot; to decline the call, make a swiping action. To turn up the audio, spin a finger clockwise; counter-clockwise turns it down. There's also the ability to save a gesture for a specific command, like telling the navigation to calculate the route home." -- Autotrader (2017)
  • "If you're concerned about fingers prints mucking up the look of your new 7-Series, you can also interact with BMW's latest iDrive 5.0 infotainment system via the console-mounted dial or voice commands. But the coolest way to interact with the 2016 7-Series is with its new gesture control interface. As of now the number of gestures recognized by the system is fairly limited, but what's there is useful and generally seamless to use." -- Left Lane News (2016)

At 18.2 cubic feet, the 7 Series’ trunk is among the largest in the class. The rear seats can fold down to make it easier to haul larger items, and a center pass-through is perfect for longer, skinnier objects such as skis. A power trunk lid is standard. Notably, the 740e plug-in hybrid has less trunk space (14.8 cubic feet) because of the placement of its battery pack.

  • "There's a generous trunk and sufficient small-item storage, but neither is exceptional. The 7 Series certainly isn't a class leader in this area, especially with the 740e, whose battery pack impinges on the trunk." -- Edmunds
