2008 BMW 7-Series Interior Review

Note: This interior review was created when the 2008 BMW 7-Series was new.

Interior: 8.5

The 7-Series is spacious, well-appointed and high-tech. Even though the sedans still have the complicated iDrive system, they do provide comfort on part with other super-luxury leaders.

MSN reports the 7-Series features "plenty of room in all trim levels." New Car Test Drive calls the interior "whisper-quiet" and "exceptionally comfortable, with every gizmo you can imagine." The Sacramento Bee says, "Stepping inside the BMW offered perspective on what constitutes a true luxury sport sedan."

Riding inside a 7-Series is pure luxury, with comfortable seats tailored to all sizes. The front seats are supportive and offer a wide range of adjustment. "Up to five occupants can fit easily inside," Cars.com writes. Consumer Guide reports seats are firm with "fine contour," and say the cabin is "spacious and very comfortable -- true first-class travel." The Detroit News adds that the 7-Series has "Superb seats with lots of adjustments."

"No matter where you sit you'll experience a cabin that's beautiful and wonderfully comfortable," say Automotive.com. The 7's backseat is just as grand, with more than enough room. Consumer Guide says it has "Spacious opulence, especially for two adults," and Automotive.com notes the rear seats are "roomy and comfortable."

Interior Features

The 2008 7-Series comes standard with iDrive, which gets a lot of attention for its frustrating learning curve and unintuitive controls. While improved from previous years, the iDrive is still difficult to operate and more of a problem than a convenience. Some note its attractive design and clean look, while most still criticize its complexity. Edmunds reports that while the "iDrive corrals a lot of functions, including the audio, climate, navigation, Bluetooth and BMW Assist systems, it has a steep learning curve and, based on our experience, increases driver distraction." Automotive.com agrees that the iDrive requires some familiarization, mentioning that the "iDrive knob is easy for the right hand to locate without a glance; the display screen is big, and can be viewed without completely removing your eyes from the road ahead. Yet, improved or otherwise, iDrive takes a fair amount of practice just to get a rudimentary grip on its operation, and you'll need to do some reading to fully exploit it" Automotive.com mentions that the iDrive does add a "particularly clean and elegant" look to the dash because it eliminates a lot of knobs and switches. Still, reviewers report the 7's other controls are clear and simple.

The 7-Series luxury sedan is fitted with top-notch materials.  The 7-Series interior has a "sophisticated, modern ambience," says Consumer Guide. Automotive.com says both the materials and "elegant design make the 7 Series cabin an exceedingly pleasant place in which to conduct the business of driving."

The 7-Series comes standard with an AM/FM stereo, ten speakers and in-dash single-disc CD player. The standard system also includes an auxiliary input in the middle console for digital music devices. Reviewers had little to say about the base stereo but find the optional Premium Sound Package amazing and worth the extra cost. The Premium Sound Package includes a Logic7 audio system with 13 speakers (including two subwoofers), a six-disc in-dash CD changer with MP3 capability, and the previously mentioned standard stereo features. The system also includes Digital Sound Processing. Automotive.com writes it's a "superb-sounding stereo, so it's an insulated sound studio where you can hear Mozart concertos, crystal clear vocals or crisp acoustic guitar notes," and delivers "crisp highs, sharp bass, and clear mid-range tones."

The 2008 BMW 7-Series has a sufficient amount of cargo space for its class. MSN reports the 7-Series' "big trunk has a low, wide opening to facilitate quick loading." Forbes only finds the trunk room "moderate size for a car so huge," and notes "it opens and closes electrically, so there's no need to get your hands dirty on the way to the board meeting." To Automotive.com, interior storage space is ample compared to competitors, and the front-row cupholders are especially "handsome, high-tech and practical."
