2019 BMW 6-Series Interior Review

Interior: 7.9

The 2019 BMW 6 Series delivers the posh look and feel you expect in a high-end luxury vehicle. It features an attractive cabin, with modern styling and top-notch materials. The front seats are superb, though the rear seats don't offer the same amount of space or comfort as the front seats. There are plenty of intuitive tech features and a good amount of cargo space, especially in Gran Turismo models.

  • "The cabin materials, build quality, and both the driver and center console display screens are excellent. The panel gaps and exterior construction are, as you'd expect from BMW, top-notch." -- Edmunds
  • "With premium materials everywhere, exquisite fit and finish, wood or carbon-fiber accents, a high-end audio system and supremely comfortable driver's seat, BMW's 2017 6 Series leaves a lasting impression." -- Kelley Blue Book (2017)

This BMW seats five and comes standard with leather upholstery and power-adjustable front seats. Upgraded leather upholstery, front seats with added power adjustability, ventilated front seats, massaging front seats, heated rear seats, and a heated steering wheel are available.

Up front is the place to be in this car. The front seats provide acres of space as well as all-day comfort and support. The rear seats don't have as much room as some rivals’. Seating three in the back is not feasible, and tall adults may have problems with the limited headroom.

There are two full sets of LATCH child-seat connectors. The inward lower anchors are particularly difficult to access. Once clipped in, the car seats face more difficulties: front-facing seats don't lay flat due to the protrusion of the fixed rear head restraint. Rear-facing seats fit better but require the front seats to be moved up.

  • "The BMW 640i is built for front passenger comfort. In that aspect, this car is one of the leaders in this segment. The cramped rear seats are a different story completely and diminish the overall impression." -- Edmunds
  • "The front seats provide excellent comfort for a variety of body types and this is especially true for the 16-way seats that come with the 650i. By contrast, the rear seats are confining and best left for very small occupants or occasional use." -- Autoweek (2017)
  • "Not surprisingly, rear-seat room is … acceptable on Gran Coupes." -- Kelley Blue Book (2017)

Interior Features

Standard features in the 6 Series include a panoramic moonroof, dual-zone automatic climate control, wireless device charging, and the iDrive infotainment system with a 10.2-inch touch screen, touchpad controller, a 12-speaker hi-fi audio system (in Gran Turismo models; Gran Coupe models have a nine-speaker system), satellite radio, HD Radio, Bluetooth, two USB ports, a Wi-Fi hot spot, navigation, and Apple CarPlay.

Standard driver assistance features include a rearview camera, driver drowsiness monitoring, collision preparation, front and rear parking sensors, and adaptive cruise control. Gran Turismo models also come with BMW's Active Driving Assistant, which includes forward collision warning, pedestrian detection, automatic emergency braking, traffic sign recognition, lane departure warning, blind spot monitoring, and rear cross traffic alert.

Available features include quad-zone automatic climate control, a 16-speaker premium audio system, and a rear-seat entertainment system. Available active safety features include a head-up display, night vision, side-view and top-view cameras, automatic parallel park assist, remote control parking, lane keep assist, traffic jam assist, and front cross traffic alert.

There are plenty of standard features in the 6 series, particularly the Gran Turismo model, which includes a lot of driver assistance features that are not standard in the Gran Coupe. The iDrive infotainment system requires a slight learning curve, but it's easy to navigate the menus and adjust the settings once you're used to it.

  • "BMW's iDrive infotainment system is very useful once you learn it, and optional gizmos such as night vision easily impress. Still, we're disappointed that only Apple CarPlay is supported and not standard equipment." -- Edmunds (2018)
  • "For audiophiles … [the Bang & Olufsen] name is music to their ears because they know how amazing the music in their ears will sound. This optional sound system drenches ears with 1,200 watts of sound emanating from 16 speakers, each with its own amplifier." -- Kelley Blue Book (2016)
  • "… the sporty dashboard, which is exclusive to the 6 Series, swoops snugly toward the driver, accented by the beautiful 10.2-in iDrive screen with its much-improved current interface." -- Autotrader (2015)

The Gran Turismo, which is a hatchback, provides outstanding cargo capacity, with 31 cubic feet of room behind the rear seats. You can expand that to 65 cubic feet by folding down the rear seats. Those are SUV-like totals, and they dwarf most competitors' cargo totals. The only downside is that the 6 Series has a relatively high liftover height, which can make it difficult to load heavy items.

Gran Coupe models don't give you as much room, but they still have 16.2 cubic feet of trunk space, which is more than what most class rivals provide. A hands-free power trunk lid comes standard.

  • "… the trunk liftover is rather high. The split-folding rear seats and center pass-through allow for longer and bulkier objects, though." -- Edmunds (2017)
  • "… the trunk is surprisingly sizable." -- Kelley Blue Book (2014)
