2016 BMW 6-Series Interior Review

Note: This interior review was created when the 2016 BMW 6-Series was new.

Scorecard

Interior: 8.4

No matter which model you select, the 2016 BMW 6-Series' cabin is replete with first-class materials, according to automotive journalists. Front-seat comfort is excellent. If you need a spacious rear seat, the four-door Gran Coupe is the most hospitable of the 6-Series lineup, though it still offers less headroom than a more traditional sedan such as the BMW 5-Series. The iDrive infotainment system has crisp graphics and a logical interface.

  • "With premium materials everywhere, exquisite fit and finish, wood or carbon-fiber accents, a high-end audio system and supremely comfortable driver's seat, the 2016 6 Series leaves a lasting impression." -- Kelley Blue Book
  • "Materials quality is top-notch, while the specific trimmings are highly customizable. Depending on your preferences, the appearance of the cabin can range from richly luxurious to edgy and avant-garde." -- Edmunds
  • "Interior materials are exceptionally nice." -- AutoTrader (2015)

Seating

The BMW 6-Series coupe and convertible seat four and the Gran Coupe seats five. Leather upholstery, 10-way power-adjustable heated front seats and a power-adjustable steering wheel are standard. Seating options include upgraded leather upholstery, 20-way power-adjustable front seats and ventilated front seats.

The 6-Series' standard front seats offer superb comfort, and the optional 20-way adjustable seats are more comfortable still. Coupe and convertible models offer limited rear-seat space, which is typical for those types of vehicles. The 6-Series Gran Coupe offers ample legroom, though headroom is tighter than in more traditional sedans like the BMW 5-Series.

  • "The front seats are superbly comfortable and low to the ground, reinforcing the car's sporty character. Rear seat passengers certainly fare better than in the 6 Series coupe, but worse than in the 5 Series due to a significant reduction of headroom and the so-called '+1' center rear seating position that's really only useful for children on very short trips." -- Edmunds (Gran Coupe)
  • "Not surprisingly, rear-seat room is tight in the coupe and convertible, but acceptable on Gran Coupes." -- Kelley Blue Book
  • "With a wheelbase stretching 4.4 inches longer than its two-door sibling, the Gran Coupe boasts a healthy amount of rear seat legroom. Unlike some other players in the four-door-coupe segment, the Gran Coupe can accommodate three passengers in back." -- Left Lane News (2015)
  • "The standard 10-way power front seats are more than pleasant, but the 20-way Multi-contour seats are so versatile and supportive that they're almost a must-buy." -- AutoTrader (2014)

Interior Features

The 2016 BMW 6-Series comes standard with proximity key, dual-zone automatic climate control, front and rear parking sensors, HD Radio, satellite radio, a rearview camera, Bluetooth, a USB port and BMW's iDrive infotainment system with a 10.2-inch display screen and navigation.

Available features include a head-up display, a Bang & Olufsen or Harman Kardon audio system, forward collision warning, lane departure warning, adaptive cruise control, side- and top-view cameras and automatic parallel park assist. Coupe and Gran Coupe models come with a power moonroof, and convertible models have a power-retractable soft top.

BMW's iDrive system is easy to use thanks to its sharp graphics, fast responses and intuitive menu layout. Both the Harman Kardon and Bang & Olufsen audio systems deliver rich sound quality.

  • "For audiophiles, … [the Bang & Olufsen] name is music to their ears because they know how amazing the music in their ears will sound. This optional sound system drenches ears with 1,200 watts of sound emanating from 16 speakers, each with its own amplifier." -- Kelley Blue Book
  • "The iDrive electronics interface has a straightforward menu structure, crisp graphics and quick processing times, which helps minimize the amount of time you spend looking away from the road. It also provides many ways to play or stream audio media, and the available Harman Kardon audio system cranks them out with authority (to say nothing of the considerably more powerful Bang & Olufsen setup)." -- Edmunds
  • "[T]he sporty dashboard, which is exclusive to the 6 Series, swoops snugly toward the driver, accented by the beautiful 10.2-in iDrive screen with its much-improved current interface." -- AutoTrader (2015)

Cargo

According to BMW, the 2016 6-Series coupe and Gran Coupe have 16.2 cubic feet of trunk space, which is about average for the class. Alternatives like the Audi A7 and Tesla Model S have more room for your gear. The 6-Series convertible has 12.4 cubic feet with the top up and 10.6 with it lowered, which is fairly typical for a luxury two-door. There is a split-folding rear seat in the coupe and Gran Coupe, which aids in cargo-carrying capacity, although you have to lift items fairly high to get them into the trunk.

  • "[T]he trunk liftover is rather high. At least the rear seat has split-folding functionality and an armrest pass-through to help improve utility." -- Edmunds
  • "[T]he trunk is surprisingly sizable." -- Kelley Blue Book (2014 coupe and convertible)
