The 2015 BMW 6-Series’ potent engines and athletic handling make it feel sporty for a luxury car, critics say. Test drivers also appreciate that it has different driving modes where you can adjust the 6-Series’ performance characteristics. Fuel economy in the base 6-Series is very good for the class.

Acceleration and Power

BMW 640i models come with a turbocharged 3.0-liter six-cylinder engine that produces 315 horsepower, while 650i models have a 445-horsepower, twin-turbocharged 4.4-liter V8. Both models come with an eight-speed automatic transmission. The 2015 BMW 640i gets up to an EPA-estimated 21/32 mpg city/highway, which is very good for the class.

The performance-oriented 2015 BMW M6 features a twin-turbocharged 4.4-liter V8 engine that produces 560 horsepower and 500 pound-feet of torque. A seven-speed automated manual transmission is standard and a six-speed manual is a no-cost option. BMW reports that the M6 coupe can accelerate from 0 to 60 mph in 4.1 seconds and has a top speed of 155 mph. The Alpina B6 xDrive Gran Coupe is new for 2015 and comes with a twin-turbocharged 4.4-liter V8 that makes 540 horsepower and 540 pound-feet of torque. An eight-speed automatic transmission is standard. BMW estimates that the Alpina B6 will go from 0 to 60 mph in 3.7 seconds and hit a top speed of 198 mph.

Auto writers think the 640i feels very powerful, and they say the 650i and the M6 offer extraordinarily strong acceleration.

The 2015 BMW 6-Series comes standard with rear-wheel drive and an adaptive suspension system, which lets you adjust suspension stiffness. Available features include all-wheel drive and rear-wheel steering, which can ease parking maneuvers and make the 6-Series more stable at high speeds. While some critics point out that the 6-Series' size limits its athleticism compared to that of smaller sport sedans, they note that it’s still quite agile. Many also appreciate its responsive steering and composed ride.
