2014 BMW 6-Series Performance Review

Note: This performance review was created when the 2014 BMW 6-Series was new.

Performance: 8.3

Reviewers say that the 2014 BMW 6-Series and 6-Series Gran Coupe offer powerful engine choices, poised handling and a comfortable ride. Critics also appreciate how you can tailor the driving experience with the standard Driving Dynamics Control system, which adjusts throttle response, transmission shift behavior, power steering assist and the suspension system for Comfort+, Comfort (Normal), Sport, Sport+ and Eco Pro drive modes.

  • "Boasting a pair of awesome turbocharged engines, superb interior craftsmanship and epic high-speed composure, the 6 Series hits all the right notes for drivers who want that king- or queen-of-the-road character." -- AutoTrader
  • "The 2014 BMW 6 Series boasts something of a Jekyll and Hyde nature, but both characters in this story deserve praise. Think of Comfort mode as Dr. Jekyll, in which the BMW 6 Series is a high-power pleasure cruiser with a comfortable-yet-responsive ride. Switch the Driving Dynamics Control to Sport+ mode, and suddenly Mr. Hyde appears. Here, the transmission eagerly kicks down, the revs go up, the suspension tightens, and the 6 Series begins to feel like a smaller, lighter sports car." -- Kelley Blue Book
  • "There are modes for driving long distances while still being comfortable, and there are modes for playing race car driver. So it's got something for everyone." -- AutoWeek (640i xDrive Gran Coupe)
  • "The 6 Series is a sporting car that can also cruise the boulevard." -- Edmunds (2013)

Acceleration and Power

All BMW 640i models come with a 315-horsepower, turbocharged 3.0-liter six-cylinder engine, while 650i models have a 445-horsepower, twin-turbocharged 4.4-liter V8 engine. Both models feature an eight-speed automatic transmission. According to the EPA, the 2014 BMW 640i gets 22/32 mpg city/highway, which is great for the class. At 20/30 mpg, the 640i Gran Coupe gets better fuel economy than competitors like the Jaguar XJ and Porsche Panamera.

The high-performance BMW M6 features a twin-turbo 4.4-liter V8 engine that produces 560 horsepower and 500 pound-feet of torque. A seven-speed automated manual transmission is standard and a six-speed manual is a no-cost option. BMW reports that the 2014 M6 coupe accelerates from 0 to 60 mph in 4.1 seconds and has a top speed of 155 mph.

Test drivers note that 640i models are quick off the line and offer plenty of power for highway merging, which they think should make them a good choice for most shoppers. The 650i also earns praise for its smooth and strong power delivery, while auto writers are amazed by the remarkable acceleration that the M6 Gran Coupe provides. They add that the 6-Series’ standard eight-speed automatic transmission is responsive at any speed, and that it provides smooth, fast gear changes.

  • "It's safe to say that no 6 Series is slow. With a ‘base’ 640i Coupe, you'll beat a most other cars up the onramp with a 0-60 mph time of 5.3 seconds." -- Kelley Blue Book
  • "Acceleration is strong yet civilized with the 640i's inline 6-cylinder. You'll be surprised by how easily this little engine chucks the chubby Bimmer around. But the main event here is the 650i's twin-turbo V8, which is so quick at any speed that it makes us question the point of the M6. This engine is simply spectacular." -- AutoTrader
  • "Nail the gas pedal in the 2014 BMW 650i and the turbocharged V8 rewards you with wickedly quick acceleration. It might not seem like it given the car's overall smoothness, but only a handful of sports cars are capable of hanging with the 650i in a straight line. That said, the turbocharged inline-6 in the 640i is more than sufficient and will be a great choice for buyers as well." -- Edmunds
  • "The M6 is staggeringly quick. The engine's power hits like a hammer, flattening cabin occupants into their leather chairs, only relenting when the driver has the good sense to back off the gas." -- Autoblog (M6 Gran Coupe)
  • "Both models feature a ZF-sourced eight-speed automatic that shifts flawlessly and quickly, and there's enough grunt at nearly any speed-particularly in the 650i-that it hardly matters which gear you're in." -- Car and Driver (2013 640i and 650i Gran Coupe)

Handling and Braking

The 2014 BMW 6-Series comes standard with an adaptive suspension system and rear-wheel drive. Available features include all-wheel drive and Integral Active Steering, which adds rear-wheel steering to make the 6-Series more stable at speed and ease parking maneuvers. While some reviewers note that the 6-Series isn’t quite as nimble as the BMW 4-Series, most agree it’s still athletic for a super luxury car. The 6-Series also pleases auto writers with quick steering and a comfortable ride.

  • "The 6 Series is more athletic in corners than the already-capable 7 Series on which it's based, but it's too large and heavy for ‘ultimate’ driving. The 6 Series model's comfort zone is on the highway, where it's impossible to get this car flustered. Think serene and planted at all speeds." -- AutoTrader
  • "While the 2014 BMW 6 Series is understandably not as sharp and agile as BMW's smaller, sportier 4 Series, its high levels of grip and composed nature are well suited for what we expect most drivers will want from a big grand touring car like this." -- Edmunds
  • "I can say from my overnight stay that the car behaves like a typical BMW when driving normally. In sport mode, steering feels crisp and is well weighted." -- AutoWeek (Gran Coupe)
  • "From behind the wheel, however, this BMW manages to mask its abundant heft with some success, thanks in part to the adjustable chassis." -- Car and Driver (2013 Gran Coupe)
