2012 BMW 6-Series Performance Review

Note: This performance review was created when the 2012 BMW 6-Series was new.

Scorecard

Performance: 8.3

This year, the 650i gets a more powerful turbocharged 4.4-liter V8 engine. Compared with the 2010 model, the 650i's engine pumps 40 more horsepower and 90 more pound-feet of torque.

  • "In truth, we're not really hammering mercilessly on the topless 650i, it's clear from just a few minutes in that this BMW remains a very much grand tourer and not a sports car." -- Autoblog

Acceleration and Power

In comparison to the 2010 model’s 4.8-liter V8 engine, the 2012 650i has a smaller, but more powerful, engine. It gets a turbocharged 4.4-liter V8 engine that pumps out 400 horsepower and 450 pound-feet of torque, which is significantly more than the previous model. A six-speed manual transmission and an eight-speed automatic transmission are available.

  • "While the official EPA fuel economy figures haven't been released yet, BMW promises the new powertrain will be more efficient, but that's not saying a great deal, as the outgoing car was practically an OPEC Club Gold member, ringing up 15 miles per gallon in the city and 23 mpg on the highway." -- Autoblog

Handling and Braking

Reviewers say the 650i handles well during leisurely drives. The 650i has an electric steering system and optional integral active steering. BMW says this feature makes steering more direct at speeds of 30 mph and slower.
