2012 BMW 6-Series Overview

The base 2012 BMW 640i comes with a turbocharged six-cylinder engine that reviewers said operates smoothly and offers plenty of power off the line. The BMW 650i has a twin-turbocharged V8, and automotive journalists agreed that it is immensely powerful, with immediate acceleration for highway passing and merging. An eight-speed automatic transmission is standard on both models, and reviewers agreed the transmission shifts quickly and seamlessly. According to the EPA, the 2012 BMW 640i gets up to 23/33 mpg city/highway, which is very good for the class. Test drivers said the 6-Series has a firm, yet comfortable, ride and many noted that it feels particularly composed on the highway. Some wrote that the 6-Series has good cornering grip, though others mentioned that while the 6-Series offers controlled handling, it still isn’t what they would consider agile.

Reviewers agreed that the 2012 BMW 6-Series has superb interior materials and a driver-focused cabin design. They wrote that the 6-Series’ front seats are very supportive and comfortable, though like many sport cars, the 2012 6-Series doesn’t have a lot of back-seat passenger space. They also said the 6-Series’ trunk size is respectable for the class, even in the convertible. Reviewers noted that the 2012 6-Series’ iDrive infotainment system is easier to use than it was in previous models, though some said it still complicates certain functions. Standard features in the 2012 BMW 6-Series include leather upholstery, keyless access, push-button start, a rearview camera, parking sensors, a moonroof, navigation, Bluetooth, HD Radio and BMW’s iDrive infotainment system with a 10.2-inch display. Available features include a head-up display, satellite radio, a USB/iPod input, a Bang & Olufsen audio system, lane departure warning and blind spot monitoring.
