2019 BMW 5-Series Performance Review

Performance: 8.6

The 2019 BMW 5 Series delivers a great blend of athleticism and comfort. All of its many powertrain options deliver plenty of get-up-and-go, and some of them deliver good fuel economy to boot. The 5 Series handles curves well, and it does so without sacrificing ride quality.

  • "Even though the 5 Series can slather on the comfort and supply lavish levels of technology, BMW hasn't forsaken its enthusiast roots. Select Sport mode for sharper responses from the steering, transmission and throttle (and suspension, if the adaptive setup is installed), and those canyon roads will beckon. In Comfort mode, the steering feels light when the car is pointed straight ahead, not improving much in the turns. In any mode, the cabin remains tranquil." -- Autotrader
  • "This is a thrilling driver's car. Quiet and composed in town, especially with the Driving Dynamics Control set to Comfort, the 540i flips like a light-switch into teeth-bared mode the moment you start squeezing hard on the gas and getting quick on the wheel." -- Automobile Magazine (2017)
  • "Despite the infusion of technology, the BMW 5 Series remains a blast to drive." -- New York Daily News (2017)

Acceleration and Power

Each 5 Series trim comes with its own powertrain, so get comfortable because it's a long list. The base 530i comes with a turbocharged 2.0-liter four-cylinder engine with a 248-horsepower rating. The 540i features a turbocharged 3.0-liter six-cylinder engine that puts out 335 horsepower.

Three trims feature a twin-turbocharged 4.4-liter V8 engine, though the horsepower ratings are different. The M550i generates 456 horsepower, the M5 produces 600 horsepower, and the M5 Competition puts out 617 horsepower.

BMW also offers a plug-in-hybrid trim, the 530e. Its hybrid powertrain combines a turbocharged 2.0-liter four-cylinder engine with an electric motor to make 248 horsepower. The 530e can go 16 miles on electric power before it switches to gasoline power.

The base trim delivers fairly quick acceleration and enough power for all driving situations. Things only get faster as you progress through the more powerful options, with the M trims delivering zero-to-60 times that are the envy of some sports cars. Every powertrain comes with a smooth-shifting eight-speed automatic transmission.

The 530i gets good gas mileage for the class, earning an EPA-estimated 24 mpg in the city and 34 mpg on the highway. The 540i's numbers drop to 21/29 mpg city/highway, while the M550i gets just 18/25 mpg. Unsurprisingly, the plug-in hybrid 530e gets the best fuel economy of the bunch, earning 72 MPGe under electric power and 29 mpg in combined city/highway driving under hybrid power. • "Even the 530i should accelerate to 60 mph in fewer than 6 seconds, so no trim level will lack for acceleration. The 530e's hybrid powertrain works smoothly and returns respectable fuel efficiency. We also like BMW's eight-speed automatic; it's well-behaved and responds readily to the driver's needs." -- Edmunds (2018)
  • "Though small in size, the turbocharged 4-cylinder in 530i models does a commendable job propelling this substantial sedan. … Drivers will find more grunt in the 540i and its turbocharged 6-cylinder. … The most powerful 5 Series outside of an M5 is the new M550i xDrive, a turbocharged V8 5 Series that puts 456 horsepower to all four wheels. With a 0-60-mph time of 3.9 seconds, it's faster than the last M5." -- Kelley Blue Book (2018)
  • "Fuel economy isn't the reason to choose the 540i. Head out onto twisty roads, and it is instantly clear what your extra $5,250 is buying: Speed, with a capital S. Though damp pavement required extra care, the 540i xDrive blasted along on some of the most beautiful roads in California, thrilling its driver as any proper BMW should. Switch the car into Sport mode, select the transmission's Sport mode, start flicking the paddle shifters, and the 540i covers ground at remarkable velocities while plastering a giant smile on your face." -- New York Daily News (2017)

Handling and Braking

As a luxury sedan, the 5 Series provides a supple ride and absorbs road imperfections with ease. But this is also a BMW, so some level of sportiness is expected. The 5 Series delivers on this front as well, with engaging handling and sharp steering. You can adjust how the 5 Series handles using the Driving Dynamics Control, which offers Eco Pro, Comfort, and Sport modes. M models feature an adaptive suspension and sport brakes, further improving performance. Rear-wheel drive comes standard, and all-wheel drive is available.

  • "The engines are punchy yet smooth, and the driving dynamics deliver sufficient sensations for the enthusiast while also providing long-distance comfort for all occupants." -- Autotrader
  • "In our brief experience with this generation 5 Series, we found it offers the kind of all-day comfort we expect from BMW. Ride quality, especially with the adaptive suspension, is excellent, and the cabin is very quiet." -- Edmunds (2018)
  • "This German luxury sedan is highly satisfying thanks to great steering feel, a quiet cabin, and the ability to strike a balance between agile handling and overall comfort." -- Kelley Blue Book (2018)
