2017 BMW 5-Series Performance Review

Note: This performance review was created when the 2017 BMW 5-Series was new.

Scorecard

Performance: 9.1

Each engine in the 2017 BMW 5 Series puts down plenty of power. The 5 Series is agile, but its performance emphasizes comfort above all. The base 5 Series earns excellent fuel economy estimates for the class.

  • "Even with the M Sport package's lowered, stiffened suspension, the 5-series drives with slightly more relaxed wheel control and improved ride quality compared with its predecessor. It's helped by a roughly 100-pound mass reduction and what feel like more compliant run-flat tires. Whereas the outgoing car was a marathoner in steel-toed boots, this 5 lands with cushioned yet controlled strides." -- Car and Driver
  • "No matter which 5 Series you choose, you're going to enjoy the car's performance." -- New York Daily News
  • "This is a thrilling driver's car. Quiet and composed in town, especially with the Driving Dynamics Control set to Comfort, the 540i flips like a light-switch into teeth-bared mode the moment you start squeezing hard on the gas and getting quick on the wheel." -- Automobile Magazine

Acceleration and Power

The base 2017 BMW 530i comes with an all-new turbocharged 2.0-liter four-cylinder engine that generates 248 horsepower. The 540i gets a new turbocharged 335-horsepower 3.0-liter six-cylinder engine. An eight-speed automatic transmission is standard with all models.

According to the EPA, the 530i gets 24 mpg in the city and 34 mpg on the highway, which are excellent numbers for an upscale midsize car.

The 530i delivers plenty of smooth power and it moves quickly. It also has a nice exhaust note. However, for quicker highway acceleration, the 540i's stronger engine gets the job done.

  • "Those wanting more grunt can step up to the 540i and its 3.0-liter turbocharged inline-six for $57,445. That engine's 335 hp and 332 lb-ft push the 5 Series to 60 in 4.9 seconds, and its additional displacement over the 530i makes it feel more responsive at highway speeds." -- Autoblog
  • "Traveling across greater San Francisco in the 530i, the turbocharged 4-cylinder engine proved buttery smooth, emitting a faint but authoritative growl under hard acceleration but otherwise proving entirely unobtrusive. No noise, no vibration, no harshness." -- New York Daily News
  • "For now, the new 5 Series sedan comes in two flavors, but whether you go with the 530i or 540i, you'll get a rewarding and engaging experience. Though small in size, the turbocharged 4-cylinder in 530i models does a commendable job propelling this substantial sedan, enabling 0-60-mph sprints in six seconds or less. Drivers desiring more grunt will find it in the 540i and its turbocharged 6-cylinder that cuts that acceleration benchmark to under five seconds." -- Kelley Blue Book

Handling and Braking

The 2017 BMW 5 Series is agile, and its steering is light and quick. The 5 Series is roughly 68 pounds lighter for 2017, enhancing its sportiness. Ride comfort is great, no matter which model you choose. You can change drive modes between Comfort, Sport, and Eco settings, and the difference is noticeable. Rear-wheel drive is standard in the 5 Series, while all-wheel drive is available.

  • "Whichever you choose, the latest 5 Series is a testament to BMW's credentials: This German luxury sedan is highly satisfying thanks to great steering feel, a quiet cabin, and the ability to strike a balance between agile handling and overall comfort. " -- Kelley Blue Book
  • "There's a marked difference between the Comfort, Sport, and Eco modes of the Driving Dynamics Control system. Steering feel and throttle response immediately tighten up in Sport mode, and that couples well with the transmission's own Sport mode that quickens shifts and holds onto gears nicely." -- Autoblog
