2019 BMW 4-Series Interior Review

Scorecard

Interior: 7.1

The 2019 BMW 4 Series has a well-built cabin with plenty of high-end, attractive interior materials. Front-row seating space is good in all models, and the Gran Coupe has decent second-row room. Other 4 Series models are more cramped in the back. All body styles offer great cargo space compared to other cars of that configuration. Most infotainment and technology features are user-friendly.

  • No squeaks or rattles were noted, and panel gaps inside and out were uniform. There's high-quality leather on the seats and steering wheel, yet on the sides of the transmission tunnel there's coarse, hard plastic where your knee rests. It stands out in an otherwise upscale interior." -- Edmunds
  • "Inside, a new sportier steering wheel rim is lined with a material that makes it easier to grip. There's fancier double stitching on the dash and new leather colors and trim offerings that are said to broaden the possibilities for personalizing the 4." -- Motor Trend (2018)
  • "As usual, the gauges are crisp and understated, with BMW's trademark red illumination casting a soothing glow at night." -- Autotrader (2016)

Seating

The 4 Series coupe and convertible both seat four people, while Gran Coupe models seat five. Leatherette upholstery and power-adjustable front sport seats are standard, while leather upholstery, heated front and rear seats, and a heated steering wheel are optional. The front seats are spacious and comfortable in all models. Coupe and convertible models are short on rear passenger space, but Gran Coupe models offer improved room and access to the second row. There are two complete LATCH car-seat connection systems on the rear outboard seats.

  • Not exactly a compact coupe, there's more than enough room all around for both driver and front passenger. Accommodating rear-seat passengers seems improbable, but two adults will have enough room in the back seats assuming the front occupants aren't too tall." -- Edmunds
  • The BMW 4 Series coupe and convertible models have four seats, but only the front two are suitable for adults for longer durations. The rear seats are tight on leg- and headroom (convertible notwithstanding), and it's not particularly easy to get back there in hardtop models. The Gran Coupe's rear doors and elongated roof do improve access." -- Kelley Blue Book (2018)
  • From a driver's perspective, the 4 Series Gran Coupe is similar to the 3 Series, but the seating position is a little lower, imparting a slightly sportier feel. … Rear accommodation is one of the few weak spots. The stylish rear roofline means taller passengers may rub their heads on the ceiling. Still, there's more people-carrying capability than in the regular 4 Series coupe." -- Autotrader (2016)

Interior Features

Standard features in the 2019 4 Series include dual-zone automatic climate control, a moonroof, a leather-wrapped steering wheel, a nine-speaker audio system, satellite radio, HD Radio, Bluetooth, a USB port, a rearview camera, front and rear parking sensors, rain-sensing windshield wipers, the iDrive infotainment system with an 8.8-inch touch-screen display, navigation, and Apple CarPlay.

Optional features include proximity keyless entry, a Harman Kardon surround-sound system, wireless charging and a Wi-Fi hot spot, automatic high beams, adaptive LED headlights, automatic parking assist, side- and top-view cameras, blind spot monitoring, lane departure warning, pedestrian and forward collision warning, automatic emergency braking, speed limit information, a head-up display, and adaptive cruise control.

The iDrive interface and the touch screen control most of the car's functions. The setup is generally easy to use after a slight learning curve. There are additional physical controls for audio volume and climate, and the instrument cluster displays a wide range of information for the driver.

  • BMW's iDrive goes a long way toward decluttering the interior while still providing the driver with information and control of the infotainment and a multitude of vehicle settings. It takes some time to explore, but once learned it becomes second nature. Other controls are fairly straightforward." -- Edmunds
  • "Additional decisive conclusions I can share: The new multifunction cluster and center touchscreen both look great and are a joy to use." -- Motor Trend (2018)
  • "In all models it's the one behind the steering wheel who's truly pampered, with a driver-focused cockpit, easy-to-reach controls and an improved iDrive infotainment system." -- Kelley Blue Book (2018)

Cargo

The BMW 4 Series convertible has 13.1 cubic feet of trunk space, and coupe models have 15.7 cubic feet. The coupe's volume is great for the class, and the convertible's space is decent – even compared to other sedans in the class. Gran Coupe models have 17 cubic feet with the rear seats up and 45.9 cubic feet with the rear seats folded down. All models come with split-folding rear seats, and the Gran Coupe features a standard power trunk lid.

  • "No one buys a coupe with practicality in mind, but the 430i is large enough to have a decent-size trunk. It's better at accepting longer items than larger ones, though, thanks to the split-folding rear seats and the short trunk opening." -- Edmunds
  • "Cargo space is fine in the coupes, but the Gran Coupe has more than 45 cubic feet with rear seats folded." -- Kelley Blue Book (2018)
  • "The body is more shapely, more 'appealing,' BMW says, while its somewhat more airy dimensions add a dose of practicality without being so practical that you would need to call it a sport-utility vehicle or a wagon, all of which are out there in the BMW lineup. For instance, you can fold down the rear seats of the 4-Series Gran Coupe and put in two bicycles without removing the front wheels (Of the bicycles. We're not suggesting you would need to remove the front wheels of the car)." -- Autoweek (2015)
