2017 BMW 4-Series Interior Review

Note: This interior review was created when the 2017 BMW 4-Series was new.

Interior: 8.1

The 2017 BMW 4 Series features an upscale interior design with high-quality materials throughout the cabin. The front seats are comfortable and offer sufficient room, but the rear seats are cramped and lack headroom. The dashboard controls are well-arranged and easy to reach from the driver’s seat. BMW’s iDrive infotainment system is also quick to respond to user inputs.

  • "While the outside of the 2016 BMW 4 Series Gran Coupe is somewhat unconventional, the cabin design is virtually indistinguishable from the 3 Series. From its classic analog gauges and center stack controls angled toward the driver, to the long list of design, comfort and convenience options, there's not much here that will surprise long-time BMW fans. The look is luxury and the quality of the materials is also first-rate." -- Edmunds (2016)
  • "The interior is richer than the previous model's, with excellent fit and finish." -- Automobile Magazine (2014)
  • "The interior remains functional and good-looking, yet the 4's layout is a near mirror image of the sedan's." -- Motor Trend (2014)

The 2017 BMW 4 Series seats four in convertible and coupe models and five in Gran Coupe sedan models. Leatherette upholstery and power-adjustable front seats are standard. Leather upholstery, heated front seats, and a heated steering wheel are available.

The 4 Series’ front seats offer ample room and good support for long drives, but rear-seat space is pinched due to the car’s sloping roofline. This cuts into rear headroom for all but the shortest passengers. However, two adults can fit back there comfortably for shorter drives, especially in Gran Coupe models.

  • "A lower seating position than in the sedan helps create a distinctly sporting vibe inside the BMW 4 Series. The standard front sport seats are very supportive and comfortable, even boasting power-adjustable side bolsters, an extraordinary standard feature in this class. Less form-fitting seats can be specified with the Luxury package if desired." -- Edmunds
  • "BMW 4 Series coupe and convertible models offer four seats, but only the front two are comfortable. The rear seats are tight on leg and headroom (drop-top notwithstanding), and it's not particularly easy to get back there in 2-door models. Of course the Gran Coupe's rear doors and elongated roof improve access and comfort for rear-seaters." -- Kelley Blue Book
  • "The 4 Series Gran Coupe is pure 3 Series inside, albeit with a one-inch lower seating position for both rows of seats. This makes the lower roofline less impactful on rear-seat headroom than you'd expect; indeed, this model's longer roofline allows adults to ride back there more comfortably than in the regular 4 Series (non-Gran) coupe." -- Autoblog (2015)

Interior Features

Standard features in the 2017 BMW 4 Series include dual-zone automatic climate control, a power moonroof, Bluetooth, a nine-speaker audio system, HD Radio, a USB port, and the iDrive infotainment system with a 6.5-inch display screen.

Available features include a 16-speaker Harman Kardon surround sound system, satellite radio, a head-up display, a rearview camera, a 360-degree camera, front and rear parking sensors, parallel parking assist, forward collision warning, lane departure warning, automatic emergency braking, blind spot monitoring, and an upgraded infotainment system with a larger screen, a touchpad controller, and navigation.

The audio and climate controls are easily accessible from the driver’s seat, and BMW’s iDrive infotainment system is fairly easy to use. That said, other systems are a bit more straightforward and require fewer commands and buttons to accomplish tasks.

  • "In terms of technology, the basic 6.5-inch display screen is adequate, but you'll want to get the larger, optional screen for a true luxury-electronics interface. Overall, iDrive is pretty easy to use, thanks to straightforward menus, crisp graphics and quick processing times. This year's model also includes an upgrade to the latest iDrive software for 4 Series models with navigation. Compared to some rival systems, however, it seems like a few more twirls and clicks are sometimes required to get what you want." -- Edmunds
  • "Mounted front and center is a 6.5-inch infotainment screen that displays sound system, climate control and (when equipped) navigation system info. It's controlled by BMW's much-improved iDrive interface, although redundant buttons and voice commands give users alternate means of accessing the electronics." -- Left Lane News (2016)
  • "[I]n all models it's the driver who's truly pampered, with a driver-focused cockpit, easy-to-reach controls and an improved iDrive infotainment system." -- Kelley Blue Book

The 2017 BMW 4 Series features 13.1 cubic feet of trunk space in convertible models, 15.7 cubic feet of space in coupe models, and a large 17 cubic feet in Gran Coupe models. With the rear seats folded down, the Gran Coupe offers 45.9 cubic feet of capacity. A split-folding rear seat is standard in all models. A power trunk lid is standard in Gran Coupe models.

  • "Luggage space is generous by two-door standards, including the convertible. Lowering the convertible's power-folding hardtop takes about 20 seconds." -- Edmunds
  • "Cargo space is fine in the coupes, but the Gran Coupe has Gran Cargo Space, too; more than 45 cubic feet with rear seats folded." -- Kelley Blue Book
  • "[Y]ou can fold down the rear seats of the 4-Series Gran Coupe and put in two bicycles without removing the front wheels." -- Autoweek (2015)
