2015 BMW 4-Series Overview

Is the 2015 BMW 4 Series a Good Used Car?

The BMW 4 Series is a very good used car. It boasts dynamic driving abilities while maintaining a comfortable and spacious ride for passengers (especially in Gran Coupe models). Beyond great performance, the 4 Series has above-average predicted reliability and excellent fuel economy estimates. Among its few negatives is an infotainment system that's a little more complicated than those in class rivals.

Used 2015 BMW 4 Series Performance and Interior

Whether you opt for the base 240-horsepower, turbocharged four-cylinder engine or turn up the heat with the available 300- or 425-horsepower, twin-turbocharged six-cylinder engine, the 4 Series is a fully capable vehicle. An eight-speed automatic transmission is available in all models, and a six-speed manual is available in coupe versions. The 4 Series’ suspension delivers a comfortable and composed ride on uneven pavement while remaining agile over twisty roads. The standard antilock brakes are strong, while the M4's carbon-ceramic brakes have even more stopping power. The 4 Series gets 20-23 mpg in the city and 30-34 mpg on the highway – an excellent rating in the upscale small car segment.

The 4 Series’ interior contains quality materials and offers sufficient passenger and storage space, but classmates like the Mercedes-Benz C-Class and Audi A4 have more upscale cabins. The standard iDrive infotainment system is intuitive, but rivals let you to click or tap through less screens to get to your desired location. Two-door coupe and hardtop convertible models seat four, and four-door Gran Coupe hatchback models seat five. There are two sets of LATCH car-seat connectors in the outer second-row seats, and the middle seat has one upper tether (in Gran Coupe models).

Regardless of body style, the 4 Series comes standard with leatherette upholstery, power-adjustable front seats, driver's seat memory settings, adaptive cruise control, HD Radio, dual-zone automatic climate control, the iDrive infotainment system with a 6.5-inch display, and Bluetooth. Available features include leather seats, an upgraded 8.8-inch display, a touchpad controller with handwriting recognition, keyless entry, heated seats, and navigation.

How Safe Is the 4 Series?

Neither the Insurance Institute for Highway Safety nor the National Highway Traffic Safety Administration has crash tested the 2015 BMW 4 Series.

The 4 Series comes with adaptive Xenon headlights and adaptive cruise control. You’ll have to step up to a higher trim for a rearview camera, blind spot monitoring, a surround-view camera, lane departure warning, a parking assistant, forward collision warning, a head-up display, or front and rear parking sensors.

Should I Consider Another Used 4 Series?

2015 marked the second model year of the 4 Series' first generation, which includes the 2018 model. Unless you want a Gran Coupe or M4, which were both introduced for 2015, you can save money by purchasing a 2014 model.

Which Used BMW 4 Series Is Right for Me?

The 4 Series comes in three body styles: coupe, convertible, and Gran Coupe hatchback. After you pick a body style, there are two trim levels to choose from: 428i and 435i. The performance-oriented M4 model is available as a coupe or convertible. The base trim is loaded with features and has sufficient horsepower for the average buyer. The 435i kicks things up a notch with a more powerful engine, while the new-for-2015 M4 further ups the ante with a stronger engine, a sport suspension, and performance brakes.

Though this BMW has an excellent predicted reliability rating, you may want to consider a certified pre-owned 4 Series. The BMW CPO program has three levels based on the vehicle’s age and the number of miles on the odometer: Certified Pre-Owned Elite, Certified Pre-Owned, and Pre-Owned. Each level receives the balance of the original new-car warranty. Certified Pre-Owned Elite vehicles get an additional one-year/25,000-mile warranty, while Certified Pre-Owned models receive an additional two-year/50,000-mile warranty. Pre-Owned BMWs receive no additional coverage. Each BMW undergoes an inspection before earning CPO status. Additional benefits like towing and roadside assistance may be available, so read the BMW warranty page carefully.

2015 BMW 4 Series and Other Cars to Consider

Which Is Better: 2015 BMW 4 Series or 2015 BMW 3 Series?

The BMW 3 Series and BMW 4 Series both have luxurious interiors, outstanding driving abilities, and above-average predicted reliability. The 3 Series doesn't have a coupe version, but it does come in sedan, Sports Wagon, and Gran Turismo hatchback models; a hybrid variant is also available. The 4 Series has a more powerful standard engine and more athletic handling, and its transmissions have smoother acceleration. Both cost around the same price, so you can’t go wrong with either.

Which Is Better: 2015 BMW 4 Series or 2015 BMW 5 Series?

The BMW 5 Series is an upscale midsize car comparable to the 4 Series in terms of fuel efficiency, powertrains, and interior. The 5 Series does not come in a convertible model, but sedan and Gran Turismo hatchback body styles are available. A hybrid model is also available for the 5 Series but not the 4 Series. The 5 Series has a bit more interior space and cargo room than the 4 Series and comes standard with navigation. Additionally, its M5 sports sedan makes a rocket-like 560 horsepower compared to the M4's 425 horsepower. Still, the 5 Series has a slightly lower reliability score and higher ownership costs. The 4 Series is a better value.

Which Is Better: 2015 BMW 4 Series or 2015 Audi A5?

The Audi A5’s interior is a bit more upscale than the 4 Series', and standard all-wheel drive helps this Audi stand out. That said, the 4 Series is more fun to drive and has higher predicted reliability scores. Go with the 4 Series for a more well-rounded car.
