2015 BMW 4-Series Overview

Is the 2015 BMW 4 Series a Good Used Car?

Yes, the 2015 BMW 4 Series is a good luxury small car. It's available in sedan (Gran Coupe), coupe, and convertible body styles. In any configuration, it's one of the most athletic cars in the class, with quick acceleration and outstanding handling. There's also a high-performance model available: the M4. Spacious front seats, a fuel-efficient base engine, and a good reliability rating only help this BMW's case. Still, the 4 Series isn't perfect – the coupe and convertible body styles have cramped rear seats, and many competitors have easier-to-use infotainment systems.

How Much Does the 2015 BMW 4 Series Cost to Own?

The 2015 4 Series’ five-year costs for gas, insurance, repairs, and maintenance are projected to be $31,000, or $6,200 per year. That’s about average for a luxury small car.

Is It Better to Buy a Used or New 4 Series?

The 4 Series debuted for 2014, and as of the 2019 model year, it has yet to undergo a redesign. However, the 2019 4 Series has a number of advantages over the 2015 model. These include more cargo space, stronger engines in the non-performance models, and a renamed trim lineup (though still with three body styles).

The 2019 comes with more standard features, including satellite radio, a rearview camera, front and rear parking sensors, an 8.8-inch touch screen, navigation, and Apple CarPlay. It also offers several things the 2015 doesn't, such as wireless device charging, a Wi-Fi hot spot, pedestrian detection, and automatic emergency braking. But you’ll have to pay more of course, with pricing for the 2019 BMW 4 Series starting at $44,950.

You won’t find a new luxury small car for the average price of a 2015 4 Series. If you can afford to raise your budget to $35,000, however, you’ll find a number of new luxury small cars to choose from. These include the 2019 Mercedes-Benz A-Class, Genesis G70, Audi A3, and BMW 2 Series. In general, these cars have much longer features lists, with more standard infotainment and driver assistance amenities, and they also tend to have more passenger and cargo space.

Which Model Year of the BMW 4 Series Is Best?

As mentioned above, the current 4 Series generation began with the 2014 model year. BMW expanded the 4 Series lineup by adding the Gran Coupe body style and the high-performance M4 trim. There were no major updates for 2016, except a limited edition model called the BMW 435i ZHP Coupe. The 2017 model did see a couple of notable changes: The 428i and 435i trims were renamed the 430i and 440i, respectively, and those trims received more powerful turbocharged engines.

Which Used BMW 4 Series Trim Is Right for Me?

The 2015 BMW 4 Series comes in three body styles: coupe, convertible, and Gran Coupe hatchback. There are also three trim levels to choose from: 428i, 435i, and M4. Notably, the performance-oriented M4 model is not available in the Gran Coupe body style.

The base trim is loaded with features and has sufficient horsepower for the average buyer. The 435i kicks things up a notch with a more powerful engine, while the new-for-2015 M4 further ups the ante with an even stronger engine, a sport suspension, and performance brakes.

What Does BMW’s Certified Pre-owned Warranty Cover?

The BMW CPO program is available on vehicles with more than 300 but less than 60,000 miles on the odometer. Eligibility is determined by the vehicle’s initial sale’s date. The program covers buyers for one year with unlimited mileage after the expiration of the four-year/50,000-mile new-vehicle limited warranty for passenger cars and SUVs for a maximum of five years of coverage. Each BMW undergoes a road test and inspection before earning CPO status. Additional benefits like towing and roadside assistance may be available. Restrictions apply on transferring certified-pre-owned coverage to subsequent owners. Read the BMW warranty page carefully.

According to our research, BMW's CPO program is on par with competitors like Audi, but it trails rivals like Lexus and Porsche.

2015 BMW 4 Series Versus the Competition

Which Is Better: 2015 BMW 4 Series or 2015 BMW 3 Series?

The 2015 BMW 3 Series is similar to the 4 Series in many ways. Both have luxurious interiors and outstanding driving abilities. The 3 Series doesn't have a coupe version, but it does come in sedan, Sports Wagon, and Gran Turismo hatchback models, as well as a hybrid variant. The 4 Series has a more powerful base engine and sharper handling, and it earns a higher reliability rating. Test-drive both to see which better suits your tastes and needs.

Which Is Better: 2015 BMW 4 Series or 2015 Audi A5?

The 2015 Audi A5 is a bit more upscale inside than the 4 Series', and the A5's standard all-wheel drive is a nice perk. On the other hand, the 4 Series is more fun to drive. These are both well-rounded cars, however, so the better choice may just come down to personal preference.

2015 4 Series Performance

How Does the 2015 BMW 4 Series Drive?

The 2015 4 Series comes standard with a 240-horsepower turbocharged 2.0-liter four-cylinder engine. There are two available six-cylinder engines – one makes 300 horsepower and the other puts out 425. Most models have either a six-speed manual or eight-speed automatic transmission, though Gran Coupe and convertible models only come with the automatic.

No matter which engine you go with, the 4 Series feels energetic. Even the turbo-four delivers eager acceleration, to the point that you may find the six-cylinder engines unnecessary. In fact, some critics say this engine is among the best turbo-fours in the class. That said, the larger engines, especially the high-performance M4's 425-horsepower setup, are incredibly potent and provide acceleration that can throw you to the back of your seat.

The great thing about the 4 Series is that it provides the kind of agile handling that lets you take full advantage of its engaging powertrains. This car feels nimble maneuvering through crowded city streets or carving up canyon roads, all while providing a comfortable ride over most surfaces.

Rear-wheel drive is standard, and all-wheel drive is available. BMW's xDrive AWD system is available, except in M4 models, which only come with RWD. This system provides good road grip even during inclement weather.

Does the 2015 BMW 4 Series Get Good Gas Mileage?

With its base engine, the 4 Series gets better fuel economy than many of its classmates. A model with the turbo-four engine and RWD achieves 23 mpg in the city and 34 on the highway. That’s the best in this lineup. At the other end is the 425-horsepower V6 with RWD that returns 17 mpg in the city and 24 on the highway.
